Hepatitis Viruses Friday, October 9, 2015: 12:30 PM Background. Pregnancy is a high risk condition for mortality during acute phase of hepatitis as compared to the non-pregnant state. This study was conducted aiming to identify the factors affecting mortality in pregnant women with hepatitis in a tertiary care hospital in North India. Methods. A case control study was conducted at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India. Data of pregnant women admitted with hepatitis, in the past 10 years (January 2005 to December 2014) was collected. All women who died during the hospital stay (a total of 24 women) constituted the cases and those who survived constituted the controls. Hundred controls were selected by stratified random sampling taking 10 subjects from each of the 10 years. Factors that could affect the mortality were documented and analyzed by logistic regression. Results. Hepatitis E and B were the commonest types among cases and controls, respectively. Mortality occurred within 5 days of admission in 91.6% and 33.2% died undelivered.
