COST E46 & E48 Actions INGEDE Seminar Faculty of Graphic Arts, University of Zagreb Zagreb, 7 November 2008

About COST COST – European COoperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research – first and the widest European network for the coordination of nationally funded research activities. The mission of COST – to strengthen Europe in scientific and technical research through the support of European cooperation and interaction between European researchers.

About COST

COST Actions are new, innovative, and interdisciplinary scientific networks of nationally funded research teams of at least five COST countries. They also contribute to the scientific, economic, cultural or societal development of Europe, by supporting networking activities such as meetings, conferences, short term scientific exchanges and outreach activities. COST does not fund the research in itself.

INGEDE Seminar Zagreb, 7 November 2008

About COST Main characteristics of COST: – “Bottom-up" approach (the idea and subject of a COST Action comes from the European scientists themselves) –“À la carte” participation (only countries who wish to participate in an Action do so) – Participation is open to all COST countries – Flexible structure

COST Action E46 Improvements in the understanding and use of de-inking technology Chair: Mr Gérard Galland (France) The main objective of the Action is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of de-inking technology in line with the introduction and use of new printing methods and vehicles, increased customer expectations and environmental considerations. The expected benefits to the European pulp and paper industry will be improvements in quality and uniformity of de-inked pulp, more efficient and effective de-inking operational improvements to meet environmental requirements and development of cost effective solutions for "difficult to de-ink" inks and toners. INGEDE Seminar Zagreb, 7 November 2008

COST Action E46 Specific objectives: – Develop better understanding of mechanisms – Better understand flotation process variables – Propose methods for improving deinkability of difficult systems – Monitor and assess trends in printing technology, ink & toner developments, market requirements for printed papers

COST Action E46 Main achievements: – Good representation across Europe – Direct industry involvement via INGEDE (represents 37 paper mills) – Good mix of fundamental research and its application – Succesful participation of Action at conferences and symposiums – Sharing the knowledge – Deinking Primer – A special issue of the magazine Progress in Paper Recycling (PPR), devoted to best research results Final conference (Bordeaux, France) in October 2008 focused on the deinkability of all types of prints. The programme - deinking difficulties related to various print types and the proposed solutions, the efforts of printers and ink manufacturers to improve the deinkability of their products, the possible adaptation of the deinking process. INGEDE Seminar Zagreb, 7 November 2008

COST Action E46 Deinking Primer gathers all basic information on deinking. In order to circulate knowledge in Europe, particularly among young scientists beginning their activities in the area of deinking, organisations participating in COST E46, with longterm deinking involvement, have provided papers describing the main deinking aspects. COST Action E48 The Limits of Paper Recycling Chair: Mr Jan-Erik Levlin (Finland) The main objective of the Action is to develop scenarios describing the future use of recovered paper within the European paper industry in order to provide a better background for focused research activities in the field as well as to facilitate investment decisions. The benefits of the Action will be a sound base for targeted research, provision of necessary arguments in the discussion with governmental organizations, guidelines for the design of recyclefriendly paper products, guidelines for more effective, tailor-made collection strategies for used paper and a background for investment decisions.

INGEDE Seminar Zagreb, 7 November 2008

COST Action E48 Specific objectives The analysis of the most important limitations to p&b recycling, governed by: – the characteristics of recovered p&b – recovered paper treatment technologies – market developments, legislation and sustainability. The development of scenarios on the future of paper recycling in Europe. The identification of the research necessities which might be instrumental in extending the limits.
