Course Description Theoritical lectures : 3hrs. A development of the fundamental principles of chemistry and their applications. Chemical nomenclature, stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding theories, thermochemistry, periodic properties, solution calculations, gas laws and the properties of solids and liquids are among the topics discussed. At the end of this course students will have idea about thermodynamics, where they will learn the first law of thermodynamics and all of the terminology associated with it, thermochemistry (including exothermic and endothermic reactions). Laboratory lectures : Preparation of different inorganic solutions and buffers, standardization of solutions, determination of partition coefficient of supplied samples, identification of different
inorganic ions from different samples, chromatography, spectrophotometry and gravimetric analysis.
Course Overview: General Chemistry (BIO 105) is an introductory course designed to familiarize the students with the fundamentals concepts, principles, and theories of basic physical chemistry. It is a laboratory course designed specifically as a foundation course. Students will be expected to actively participate in discussion during theory and practical classes.
Course Principles
Reading Reading will be assigned from the books recommended. Students will be quizzed at the beginning of each class on the assigned reading for that day. It is important that students come to class prepared to discuss the topics that covers the reading assignments. Students must bring their own aprons; otherwise they’ll not be allowed to stay in the lab. Also, students must read the principle of the experiment prior coming to the laboratory class.
Attendance Attendance in class and practical lab is mandatory and will be taken each day. Any student who does not maintain a 75% attendance for each of the theoretical and practical classes will automatically receive “F” for the course. Students will automatically fail if they miss more than 4
lectures. Assignments/Quizzes/Class tests Each class will begin with quiz on that day’s reading assignment. There will also be one midterm and one final examination administered. The exams will assess the student’s comprehension of the concepts covered in reading assignments and classroom discussion/lectures. If needed, students will be given writing assignments and/or presentations to prepare.

Grading Policy Makeup exams will be given only at the discretion of instructor.
Professionalism Students are expected to carry themselves with professional decorum and to show respect to the teacher and fellow students while in class. Please do not disrupt class by arriving late or leaving early. Students arriving 10 minutes after class starts will be marked absent for that class.
Plagiarism Any student found copying another person’s work, cheating on an exam or quiz will either be given zero on the work or an “F” in the course.
