Course programme for German as a Foreign Language for international doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scientists and newly-appointed professors and their spouses/partners

Who we are? The Welcome Center aims to intensify international research cooperations by establishing attractive conditions such as: • S upport and assistance for international scientists and their families in all non-academic affairs (visa application, travel arrangements, subsequent immigration of your spouse/ partner and/or children, official formalities in Konstanz, questions concerning the law on foreign nationals, insurances, house hunting, etc.) • W  e will draw up your personal support schedule to help you plan and prepare your stay in Konstanz and assist you while you are here. • W  e are the central contact point for interlinking university and municipal services and provide comprehensive information on living in Konstanz • I ntercultural seminars and integrative projects in cooperation with internal and external partners (the education and higher education system including funding possibilities, social insurance and pension scheme, list of medical doctors in Konstanz with foreign language skills, international gatherings (“Stammtisch”), etc. • Language courses tailored to the needs of international researchers and their families Information on the courses for German as a foreign language Target group: International doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scientists and newly-appointed professors and their spouses/partners. Conditions: German courses are held during the semester. They start in mid-October or mid-April and end in mid-February or mid-July. There are usually two lectures per week.

Lecturers: Our German courses are designed by professional language teachers to meet the specific requirements of internationally mobile researchers. Certificate: Course participants will receive a certificate of the University of Konstanz at the end of the semester. The certificate states the course contents as well as the language level achieved according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Participation fees for the summer semester 2012: The courses are subsidized by the University of Konstanz. Course participants pay a certain contribution: • Doctoral students/spouses/partners: 70 euros (2 hours/week) or 120 euros (4 hours/week). • All other researchers/spouses/partners: 95 euros (2 hours/week) or 170 euros (4 hours/week). If you take two or more courses, you will get a 50% discount for the least expensive course. Terms of cancellation: Courses can be cancelled free of charge no later than one week prior to commencement of the course. After the course has started it can be cancelled within the first two weeks in justified exceptional cases. A 30 euro cancellation fee will be charged. Course description: Communicative German classes with an intercultural focus. We will deal with various topics to expand your vocabulary. Grammar topics will be determined in cooperation with course participants.

Course description: This course is intended as a supplementary course for intermediate courses B1 and B2. We will determine your needs by means of a survey and define the necessary topics based on short tests. Some grammar topics are typically dealt with on these levels, other topics can be suggested by the participants.

We will deal with various topics to expand your vocabulary. We will practise German grammar together and use it in various communication situations. Target group: International scientists (and their spouses/partners) who have a good intermediate knowledge of German or have completed level B2 Certificate: Regular and active attendance, homework, short presentations

Level C1/C2 9. Oral presentations C1/C2 for international scientists at the University of Konstanz (2 hours/week) Lecturer: Sabine Mohan Course dates: F ri. 8.15 – 9.45 Uhr, weekly, room E 703 (Alternative date: Wed. 11.45 – 13.15 weekly, room E 703) Course description: Practising oral presentations. Presentation structures and techniques will be practised by giving short presentations that are discussed in group. If you have to give a presentation in a foreign language, it is important to define realistic objectives and to make yourself familiar with the appropriate rhetorical stylistic devices. Practical exercises on how to speak (pace, modulation, clear pronunciation, etc.) and make contact with the audience will also be part of the course.
