Career Pathways Recognizes NNS Volunteers For a Great Year More than 200 Career Pathways volunteers were recognized for the 2011-2012 school year with a luncheon on June 28. This year’s luncheon celebrated the collaboration between various divisions and departments, The Apprentice School, local industries, and school systems that enabled the program to make incredible strides. This year, Career Pathways reached out to more than 12,000 students throughout Hampton Roads, as well as 700 teachers and adult learners. During the event, Career Pathways Manager Jennifer McClain thanked volunteers for a wonderful year. “This program has had an effect on the success of the students, the school system, the shipbuilding industry, and our community,” she said. “You are helping to create future shipbuilders. The students need you, the community

The expo featured more than 80 displays of technology developed by NNS to benefit the operations of aircraft carriers, submarines, power and energy, and growth initiatives. “With over 500 participants, the Technology Expo provided great exposure for the breadth and depth of research projects happening across the company,” said Suzanne Beckstoffer, director of Research and Development. “It highlighted cost July 16 - 20, 2012

Shipbuilders Travel to Sea on USS George H.W. Bush In June, 13 Newport News shipbuilders boarded USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) at Naval Station Norfolk and sailed out with the ship’s crew for carrier qualifications. During the five days the team was aboard CVN 77, they toured the ship and were given insight into how the carrier’s systems work at sea. The team was able to talk and exchange ideas with sailors and see what works, what doesn’t work and what improvements can be made for future carriers. “This trip was an invaluable experience for me,” said Stacyann Walker (K76). “It really brought into perspective how what we do here at Newport News Shipbuilding plays a

critical part in U.S. Navy operations. By seeing the systems in operation, it gave me a broader perspective on the types of problems that can be solved based on the models we build here at the shipyard.” View a video from the CVN 77 trip at nns.huntingtoningalls.com/videos. O36 Holds Summer Drive for Foodbank Shipbuilders in Training Services (O36) recently held a mid-summer food drive to help supply food to local families in need. Throughout the drive, the team collected 64 pounds of non-perishable food items and $425 for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. On July 6, Summer Interns Lauren Godette (O36) and Tara Zimak (O36) presented Maggie Gerhart, Virginia Peninsula Foodbank representative, with the food and check. The team’s contributions will help programs such as Food for Kids Backpack, Kids Café, and food distribution programs that assist children, elderly and the working poor who reside in the Hampton Roads area. “We knew the foodbank was low on food and wanted to help,” said Gaylon Montgomery (O36). “It’s just what we do. I am proud to work in a department with such generous and caring co-workers.”
