2006 DePauw University Football — 53

DePauw Football History Tiger Football Timeline 1884—On May 31, a group of students traveled to Indianapolis to take on Butler. After losing by four touchdowns, the team returned home and placed an ad in the Asbury Monthly to sell their football. The sport, which was not yet standardized for fall, did not formally reappear on campus until five years later. 1889—W. Glenn was elected as team manager/coach on a Thursday, thus becoming the first official coach in DePauw history. Two games were played, with DePauw losing at Purdue, 34-10, and defeating Indiana, 10-5. 1891—Clint Hare, who had coached Purdue the previous year, was hired as head coach. DePauw went 3-1, including a forfeit win over Wabash, which sent a telegram saying its players couldn’t play that day. 1893—With A.N. Sager as coach, DePauw had a successful 6-3 season, defeating the likes of Butler (20-6), Indiana (34-0) and Wabash (48-34). 1895—This was the first season for McKeen Field, giving DePauw its first true athletic field. It was named in honor of the president of the Vandalia Railroad, who “gave so liberally to the enterprise” of creating the facility. 1901—Anthony Chez, who coached Wabash the previous season, led DePauw to an 8-3 record. That mark included a fivegame winning streak. Chez was a graduate of Oberlin College and a clergyman. 1907—The Tigers win the first Old Gold Day game with a 19-12 victory over Earlham. 1913—Thomas Ashford Bogle, a graduate of the University of Michigan, was named head coach and led DePauw to a 5-2-1 mark. The team was named champion of the Indiana Secondary Schools. 1917—DePauw finished with a 5-2 mark and was named champion of secondary schools of Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri. 1918—A 4-1 record earned DePauw the title of Secondary Champion of the Mid-West, which included Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Michigan. One of the wins was an opening day 9-7 victory at Purdue. The season was delayed until October 26 because of an outbreak of the flu. Some injuries resulted in a 13-0 loss to Indiana, which prevented a state title. 1921—Fred M. Walker, a former assistant to Alonzo Stagg at the University of Chicago, became the head coach at DePauw. Three of the Tigers’ four wins were by shutout—28-0 over Transylvania, 41-0 over Valparaiso and 67-0 over Georgetown College. 1923—DePauw went 4-2-1, including its first win over Indiana (3-0) in 27 years to open the season. 1928—DePauw was named Indiana Secondary Champion with a 6-2 record under head coach William L. Hughes.

54 — 2006 DePauw University Football

1930—Raymond “Gaumey” Neal began his 16-year stint as DePauw’s head coach, compiling a record of 79-34-7. He started off by leading his new team to a 6-1 record, including a 22-7 win at Boston University and a narrow 7-6 win over Wabash. 1931—A 7-1 record gave DePauw the Indiana Secondary Championship. The only loss came against Ohio University by a score of 27-0. 1932—DePauw and Wabash battled to a scoreless tie on a snow and ice-covered field in the inaugural battle for the 300-pound Monon Bell. 1933—The most famous football team in DePauw history fashioned a perfect 7-0 record, was unscored upon and claimed the Indiana College Championship. This Tiger team also had the distinction of being the only untied, unscored upon team in the nation that season. They also were the last team on any level in college football to accomplish the feat. 1934—The unbeaten, unscored upon streak went five more games until Georgetown College scored a touchdown in a 49-6 loss to the Tigers. A 7-6 loss to Wabash spoiled the undefeated season. 1937—Only a 12-0 loss to Butler kept DePauw from an 8-0 record. The only other team to score on the Tigers was Franklin in a 41-6 loss to DePauw. 1941—Blackstock Stadium opened and the Tigers beat Franklin 26-6 in the first game there. The team’s 6-2 mark included a 13-6 win over the University of Louisville. 1943– The Tigers finished the season with a 5-0-1 mark as several of the top players in the country played for the Old Gold while on campus in the Navy’s V-5 and V-12 programs. 1954—DePauw joined the Indiana Collegiate Conference. 1957—Under head coach Bob Hicks, the Tigers went 6-2 for DePauw’s second winning season in six years and best since Mike Snavely’s 7-1 team in 1951. 1959—Former University of Maryland coach Thomas Mont was hired, beginning his 18-year career as the Tigers’ head coach. 1967—The Tigers finished 6-2-1 and 4-1-1 in the ICC. A 7-0 loss against Wabash evened the series at 34-34-7. 1974—This 7-3 DePauw team had the most wins since the 1951 team’s 7-1 record. 1980—The Tigers went 7-2-1 under head coach Jerry Berndt to record their first winning season since 1974, breaking 28 individual and team records in the process. For the first time ever, the team received votes in the NCAA Division III national rankings for four consecutive weeks. 1981—Nick Mourouzis, in his first season as the Tigers’ head coach, led the team

to a 9-1 record. The only loss was a 16-0 setback at Division III runner-up Dayton. The nine wins set a school record and the winning percentage was second only to the famous 7-0 squad. DePauw was ranked ninth in the final Division III poll. 1985—The Tigers were ranked 13th in the nation going into the final game following a 35-31 win over Dayton at Blackstock. DePauw took its 8-1 record into the Monon Bell game at home against Wabash with a Division III playoff berth at stake. Wabash, however, claimed a 28-8 victory and kept DePauw out of the playoffs. 1987—The Tigers played the role of spoilers by defeating sixth-ranked Wabash, 33-11. The victory, before over 8,000 fans at Blackstock, was the 400th in school history. 1989— On October 7 the Tigers staged the greatest comeback in school history and one of the most remarkable in college football history by scoring four touchdowns in a 14-minute span and overcoming a 36-9 third quarter deficit at Anderson. DePauw then held on for a 37-36 win. 1990— Wins in the last eight games (the longest winning streak during a season) propelled DePauw to one of the finest seasons in school history. A 7-0 Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference record gave the Tigers their first league championship in the history of the school. 1991—Behind at Anderson, 7-6, with 12 seconds remaining and faced with a fourth down at their own 35-yard line, the Tigers score on the game’s last play to win 12-6. Brian Goodman’s pass was deflected off a Raven player and into the arms of Steve Broderick who raced for the score. 1992– After holding leads of 10-0 and 17-7, the Tigers gave up 10 second-half points, including a game-tying 25-yard field goal which allowed Wabash to tie the Tigers in the 99th meeting between the two schools. The tie left the series tied at 45-45-9. 1993– Nick Mourouzis became the winningest coach in school history after his Tigers defeated Hanover by a 21-14 score on October 2. On November 13, the Tiger met Wabash College for the 100th time in front of over 8,400 fans at Blackstock Stadium and thousands more through a regional telecast. The rivalry was also featured in the November 22 issue of Sports Illustrated. Wabash won the battle 40-26 to take a 46-45-9 lead in the series. 1994— The Monon Bell Game once again received national attention as it was the only regular season Division III game telecast live and nationally. ESPN2 carried the 101st meeting as part of its “College Rivalries” series and veteran sportscaster Tom Mees handled the play-by-play call. The game opened with each team returning a kickoff for a touchdown. The Tigers trailed 28-6 at halftime before cutting the

lead to as little as 28-24 which was the final score. 1995— Certainly in the big-win category was the Tigers’ 14-3 upset of Albion in the home opener. The Tigers snapped the defending national champions’ 28-game win streak by holding the Britons to just a first-quarter field goal. 1996— The Tigers equaled the school record for wins in a season after finishing 9-1. The Old Gold also won their second ICAC title with a perfect 6-0 league mark and regained possession of the Monon Bell with a 31-13 win at Wabash. Jay Pettigrew and Scott Farnham earned all-America honors. 1997 — The Tigers finished second in their final ICAC season as they move to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Ranked 12th in the Sports Illustrated preseason poll, the Tigers posted an 8-2 record and beat Wabash in a snowstorm, 14-7. 1998 — The Tigers placed second in their first season in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference losing only to NCAA semifinalist Trinity. Overall, they finished 7-3 after winning their final six games including a 42-7 romp over Wabash that knocked the Little Giants out of NCAA contention and evened the all-time series at 48-48-9. 1999 — The Tigers won their fourth straight Monon Bell as they defeated Wabash 21-7. The win capped off a four-game season-ending win streak to give the Tigers a 5-5 final record. 2000 — The Tigers won their last six games and captured a three-way tie for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. They extended their Monon Bell streak to five straight with a 27-17 win. 2003 — Nick Mourouzis announced his retirement as head football coach and capped a 23-year career as the winningest coach in school history and a record of 138-87-4. In late December, former Ball State and Butler head coach Bill Lynch was named the new head coach. 2004 — The Tigers finish 8-2 for their most wins in seven years. The lone conference loss is a one-point defeat to Trinity in the final 10 seconds. DePauw reclaims the Monon Bell with a 14-7 win at Wabash. 2005 — DePauw defeated Millsaps by a 51-14 score on October 22 and became the 19th NCAA Division III program to record 500 victories. The Tigers shared their second SCAC title with a 5-0 conference mark. The tie with Trinity occurred as a result of the two teams not playing due to the possible effects of Hurricane Rita.

DePauw Football History DePauw’s Undefeated Teams An undefeated football season is difficult to achieve for various reasons. Not only are the physical demands rugged, but psychologically a team must be able to prepare with intensity for each opponent on each Saturday. Only twice in the 117 seasons of Tiger football have teams completed an entire slate without tasting defeat. Many know of the famous 1933 team which was the last college team on any level to complete a season without being beaten or tied and without being scored upon. Often forgotten, however, was the team that 62 years ago finished 5-0-1 and allowed just six points. It’s interesting to note that both teams were coached by Raymond “Gaumey” Neal and both came in eras when the nation was being stretched domestically and abroad. It’s probably safe to say that the environment around which these two teams were surrounded had a great impact on how they responded on the football field. For Neal’s un-team (undefeated, untied and unscored upon) of 1933, the players had survived at college during the Great Depression and hard work wasn’t limited to the gridiron. The 1943 squad was unquestionably shaped by the world around them. With the United States in the middle of their involvement in World War II, nearly all of the Tigers’ regulars were in the service and the team that remained was perhaps the best that could be assembled for a school DePauw’s size. One would be hard-pressed to find a better team in DePauw history, athletically, than that one. What follows are season wrap-ups of two of DePauw’s finest seasons: Perfection! The 1933 season opened at Blackstock Field against the Ball State Cardinals with the Tigers winning, 9-0. DePauw grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a safety, before Ball State threatened and nearly scored in the second quarter. Little did

DePauw’s George Lortz know at the time, but his block of a Ball State field goal made history. Not only did his efforts keep the opposition scoreless, but his return of the kick 99 yards for a score set a new national record and preserved the win. A 28-0 blanking of Earlham followed as four different players scored touchdowns. The Quakers advanced to the DePauw six-yard line, but were held there on downs. Old Gold Day was a success as the Tigers blanked Manchester, 13-0. Both scores came in the first half on runs by Bob Bradley. Bob Fribley and Wayne Schroeder were knocked out of the game with injuries as the rough Manchester team left with 145 yards in penalties. Two second-half touchdowns lifted the Tigers to a 12-0 win over a tough Hanover College team. Hanover intercepted two DePauw passes in the first quarter, but penalties kept them off the scoreboard. Late in the second period Hanover advanced to the DePauw five-yard line, but a costly fumble gave the ball back to the Old Gold. The second half opened with a kickoff return by Bradley to the Hanover 40. Then, on the second play from scrimmage, a DePauw pass went off a DePauw receiver and then a Hanover defender and into the arms of Al Volkman who raced the remaining distance for the score. In the fourth Hanover had the ball at the DePauw 13-yard line before Lortz intercepted a pass at the three. The Hilltoppers, as they were called then, totaled 12 first downs to the Tigers’ four. Win number five came at home to Franklin by a 26-0 count. The Tigers scored in every period but the third and held a 20-0 advantage at halftime. DePauw played straight football, as it was called then, by running the ball on all but one play. Bradley scored two of the Tigers’ touchdowns. One newspaper account called the line play the finest all year. A 34-0 rout of Evansville followed for win number six. The Tigers scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters. In the second quar-

ter Evansville moved to the DePauw 13-yard line before losing the ball on downs. They would get no closer. The second annual Monon Bell game was the final test for Neal’s charges to pass. A Wabash homecoming crowd of 4,000 saw the Tigers prevail 14-0. The Little Giants put a scare to the Tigers in totaling five first downs in the first quarter, but couldn’t cross the goal line. DePauw scored in the third and then, with two minutes left in the game, Lortz recovered a Wabash fumble on his own 45-yard line to set up the other Tigers’ score. Wabash had 11 first downs to the Tigers’ six. In a post-season wrap-up, the Indianapolis News wrote: “Thus DePauw achieved its record. Never keyed by dressing room oratory (their coach does not believe in it), never overworked by midweek scrimmage, never playing when the least bit out of condition or disabled, always hustling for their jobs because of energetic reserves–here was a thoroughly amateur college football team having a lot of fun Saturday after Saturday.” At the conclusion of the season, the team was entertained and fed by Greencastle businessmen at the Elms Inn. As the paper also reported: “This formally closed the greatest football season enjoyed by any college team this year, but Osborn Engineering Company has not been called in to build a new stadium, the football coach is not firing the president and the boys are still attending classes.” 1933 Results (7-0) Ball State W Earlham W Manchester W Hanover W Franklin W at Evansville W at Wabash W

DePauw Football History The Steuberized Tigers The 1943 Tigers were, indeed, the last team in school history to complete a season without a loss and they did it with an unbelievable assortment of players. DePauw University will likely never see the collection of talent that was assembled on this team. While the United States was in the middle of its involvement in World War II, DePauw was serving as a training site for the Navy’s V-5 and V-12 programs. Because of that, several college standouts were competing on the football team. Included were Bob Steuber, an all-American at Missouri who led college football in scoring in 1942 and is currently in the College Football Hall of Fame. He played with the Chicago Bears before he played at DePauw and after as well. Also on the team was Bob Johnson, an all-Big Ten center at Michigan in 1941; halfback Vic Schwall of Northwestern; George Petty of the 1943 College All-Stars; Ken Maikkula of the New York Giants; Bill Biddle of William and Mary; Ralph Zilly of Northwestern and DePauw’s Horace Filer. The Tigers opened the season at Oberlin and finished tied, 0-0. This game took place before Steuber and several of the other players had arrived and against a team which would go the rest of the season without a loss as well. When those players did arrive the team wasted little time in getting the machine rolling. After only two days of practice, Steuber led the Tigers to a 50-0 thrashing of Illinois Normal. In his first game with the Old Gold, the former all-

American scored 25 points on four touchdowns and an extra point. He also threw to Biddle for another score. Two of his TD runs were for 65 and 32 yards, while his pass covered 45 yards. He totaled 255 yards rushing on 22 carries. The Tigers then defeated Indiana State 39-6 and the Sycamores would be the only team to score against DePauw. Steuber scored 27 points in the contest and rushed for 211 yards on 15 carries. The Tigers began the game at their own 32-yard line. Steuber ran the first play for 38 yards to the ISU 30. After the Tigers were stopped on the next two plays, Steuber got the call and scored standing up. The Monon Bell game with Wabash was next and the Tigers cruised to a 33-0 win as Steuber scored 25 points on four touchdowns and an extra point and totaled 266 yards rushing on 19 carries. The Tigers’ second score of the game came on a 44-yard Steuber run. In the third quarter, Steuber connected on a pass with Biddle which covered 54 yards for a score. Near the end of the third quarter, he scored one of his two 50-yard touchdown runs. The Tigers were scheduled to play the Little Giants again that year, but the game never took place because Wabash would only play if the Tigers limited the number of players on their squad. Ohio Wesleyan University was next up and they quickly went down as DePauw triumphed 42-0. Steuber totaled 178 yards on 21 carries, completed three passes for 20 yards, punted four times for a 37-yard average and scored 23 points. He lifted his

season total to 100 points in four games and in 135 minutes. Cliff Washburn, a former Wisconsin back, scored the Tigers’ final points of the day on a 67-yard run and added the conversion. The season ended with the Tigers crushing Fort Knox on a rain-soaked field. Steuber scored 29 points on four touchdowns and five extra points on Old Gold/Dad’s Day. Ted Reiger scored on a 79-yard run for the Old Gold. Steuber finished with 129 points which led the nation. The Tigers averaged 401.8 yards of total offense per game, while holding the opposition to 86.2 yards. DePauw outgained their opponents by an average of 348-36 yards per game. For the season Steuber totaled 1,078 yards in 99 carries and had a 215.6 yards per game average. Additionally, the Tigers outscored the opposition by an average score of 34.3-1. According to newspaper articles of the time, DePauw finished the season ranked in a tie for 31st in the final Associated Press poll. 1943 Results (5-0-1) at Oberlin T Illinois Normal W at Indiana State W Wabash W Ohio Wesleyan W Fort Knox W

DePauw Football History Blackstock Stadium

Old Gold Day

Built in 1941 at a cost of $100,000, Blackstock Stadium underwent a renovation in 1997 that included the addition of locker rooms, a multipurpose meeting room and improvements to restrooms, concession stand and the training room. The addition of an indoor tennis and track center in the spring of 2001 has made the entire athletic complex one of the best among Division III schools. The stadium includes a large all-brick stand on the west side of the field accommodating 3,000 and a 1,000-seat all-brick east stand. On the west side, atop the stands, is a 40-seat press box which is one of the finest on the Division III level. Four-fifths of the building cost of $100,000 came from Mrs. Ira Blackstock in memory of her husband, an 1886 alumnus of DePauw. The Blackstocks earlier (in 1923) had given $25,000 to purchase and improve the land on which the stadium was later built. Additional land was given by President and Mrs. G. Bromley Oxnam. The small brick fieldhouse, south of the present west stands, was built in 1933 at a cost of $9,000. It was used until Mrs. Blackstock’s gift created the new structure. The Blackstock’s home was Springfield, Ill., where both were active in religious and civic affairs, Mrs. Blackstock was the first woman trustee of DePauw. In the early years of DePauw football, teams played on campus but that practice was later forbidden. After several plans for a new field failed to materialize, a site was discovered by two students and alumnus W.R. McKeen gave $500 toward its purchase. Others contributed and soon the students were boasting that the field, named McKeen Field was the best in the state. The team first played on the West Hanna Street site in 1895 and defeated Indiana in the inaugural game. Additional funds had to be borrowed for bleachers and other improvements, and by the time the mortgage was finally paid off in 1909, McKeen Field seemed entirely inadequate. McKeen Field was the center of outdoor athletics until 1923 when the Blackstocks gave the $25,000 toward Blackstock Field. Ground was broken on Blackstock Field in March 1921 and the field was dedicated on Old Gold Day in 1923.

Old Gold Day originated in 1907 and was designed to put a formal stop to scrapping between freshmen and sophomores in the fall. Originally, the day began with an organized scrap between the freshmen and sophomores in the morning, a football game in the afternoon and some sort of dramatic performance in the afternoon. Only later did it become primarily a homecoming day. The Nov. 16, 1907, edition of The DePauw Daily described the proceedings as follows: “A program starting with chapel at 8:30 and including such things as interclass basketball games (played on the tennis courts) and a varsity football game, continued throughout the entire day, with some event being scheduled all the times. The day ended with a big “jollification meeting” in Meharry Hall at 6:45, at which time D’s were awarded the varsity football men.”
