Entering the clubhouse at Boulder’s Hill Golf and Country Club in Gachibowli on a fine Friday evening, I am forced to rub my eyes for I am surrounded by a bevy of foreign nationals. Have I just apparated into a foreign land? But then my sense prevails! After all, I am in Gachibowli, one of the upmarket areas in the city. On recovering, I slowly find out the occasion is a regular get-together for the members of TEA in short for The Twincities Expatriates Association. Offering support and information services for expatriates who relocate to the city, TEA assumes a stellar role in helping them settle down as smoothly as possible. What began as a small venture in 2003 with roughly 20-odd members has today grown into a more than 350 strong association.
It’s their cup of TEA The city which welcomes outsiders with a warm embrace has a unique expat club “Having lived here for more than 17 years now, I don’t consider myself to be an expat anymore,” begins Isabelle Collin, President of TEA. Isabelle married to Venkat, an Indian says the main purpose of the association is to integrate expatriates with the local culture. Languages classes are imparted. Frequent trips to nearby places of historical significance are undertaken and an orientation of possible local challenges is given.
Gregoire Nollet, Managing Director with Air Liquide India Ltd has been a member for eight months now. Describing the city as beautiful, the Frenchman says, “Hyderabad has been a revelation thanks to TEA.”

The Association when first visualised was not more than a social gathering of expatriates living in the city. Since then, it has come a long way in promoting cross cultural relationships. It plays a key role in community development as Isabelle is keen to point out, “We contribute to eight charitable organisations through our TEA Cares Foundation”. Among the beneficiaries are the Blue Cross and Sivananda Rehabilitation home.
TIME FOR CURFEW The bustling Charminar area wore a deserted look following clashes between two groups on Sunday. Almost all the business establishments were shut early as the police imposed an indefinite curfew in the Madannapet and Saidabad police station limits following the clashes. The curfew brought back memories of the violence that broke out in Hyderabad two years ago.
At 13, Kottapalli Hemanth of Vizag is making 3D animation movies. The Class VIII student of Presidential School has not only made a 3D movie, he has completed its trailer and is currently finalising post production. Hemanth says he had always been interested in computers, Hollywood movies and cartoons and developed a passion for making 3D movies and started learning from various online sources. “He is really interested in animation movies. Since he was passionate about it, I bought a high-end computer for him,” says Kottapalli Gowrishankar, Hemanth’s father. With the help of some teachers and friends Hemanth approached a US-based free online coaching centre to learn making animated movies. Though he had practically no hands-on training, Hemanth would spend hours in front of the computer, doing tutorials and practising. “I love 3D animation movies

and have been watching them since childhood. I developed a craze to make good quality films,” says Hemanth. His father bought him an Apple computer so that he could pursue his passion. Hemanth’s movie, Alien Arena, is about a robot that defends the planet from attacking aliens. Its trial version is complete and Hemanth says that the main film will be ready in a fortnight. He has already released an animated film Wonderland. Hemanth is already a pro and can work on software like Maya 2012, 3D Motion graphics, 3D Studio Max and FCP and claims that Alien Arena will be much better than his last effort with high-end designing techniques and high quality animation.

Though more than 30 ladies have made their Ttown debut in recent times, none have managed to impress. There is thus a big void as far as leading ladies are concerned and producers and superstars are a worried lot. The producers are ready with scripts, directors and the technical crew but without lead actresses their projects are going nowhere. While some have been forced to repeat actresses or have managed to find new girls, more than 12 to 15 big ticket entertainers have been deferred due to lack of the “glam quotient”. The problem wouldn’t have taken such a proportion if the stars did one film a year like in the past. But now with stars like Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, Mahesh Babu, Jr NTR, Ram Charan Tej, Allu Arjun, Naga Chaitanya signing two or three films every year, T-town dream merchants are rushing from pillar to post, looking for leading ladies to star opposite the heroes. “No doubt we need more actresses for a wider choice; scripts demand a particular actress but we are left with limited choices,” says actor Venkatesh. Adding a new dimension, Naga Chaitanya said that Gen X stars are usually between 23 and 28 years of age and there are only a few actresses who suit that age group. “Our age narrows down the choices further, so we need to have a pool of talented, pretty girls to enable us to do more films,” he says. Summing up the trend, director Veeru Potla, says repetitions are inevitable. “B-town models look hot but lack acting skills. But if the role demands performance and good looks, we have to repeat established names and they are already busy, forcing filmmakers to defer their projects,” he says.

Having been conferred the Kreedaprapoorna title by Andhra University back in 1986, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has a special connection with Vizag. On Monday night, he was back in the Port City, lapping up thunderous applause during a felicitation function organised by AU. Sunny was in town as part of the commentary team for the IPL games involving the Deccan Chargers. Addressing the gathering, which included professors and students, Gavaskar listed out the three Ds that helped him succeed on the cricket field — dedication, determination and discipline. The Indian batting mainstay through the ’70s and ’80s also said he drew “tremendous strength from the positive energy that flows from cricket fans in India.” In a lighter vein, Gavaskar said he preferred to stay in cooler climes. “Sharp eyes are very essential for a batsman to deal with the thunderbolts hurled by fast bowlers so I try my best not to strain them,” he informed. “And I wear the helmet only to keep my head from sunlight,” Gavaskar giggled. Later, the luminary obliged fans who sought his autographs and photographs. City commissioner of police J. Poornachandra Rao lauded Gavaskar for motivating youngsters to nurse high ambitions. Cricket commentator and former professor of AU Prasanna Kumar, recalled that Prof Koneru Ramakrishnarao was instrumental in Gavaskar being conferred the Kreedaprapoorna 25 years ago. M. Ritesh, 16, is a hero-figure in school. He is a dancer, actor, sportsman and a budding physiotherapist. However, what makes his achievements even more fascinating is that in spite of his disability to speak or hear, this city boy is just a step away from qualifying for the International Special Olympics 2013 in the floorhocke category. But the sporting lad is neither worried nor is he complacent about it. “I’ll see when I get there,” he cues to Vandana Goud, his principal and coach at Sanskruti Shikhar School, exuding composure. He is visibly excited about the mega event, but boarding a plane and cruising through the sky is what comes to his mind when one mentions the international sporting meet. The travel enthusiast is looking forward to his trip to Shimla to participate in the final qualifiers. “I love Shimla, mountains and especially snow,” he communicates through his teachers. He has come a long way

When youngsters across the nation gathered on the streets in support of Anna Hazare, the country witnessed the dawn of a new era. But for realists, the real change is still a distant dream. “Gathering on streets or partaking in dharnas in front of offices will not bring about change. The youth must exercise the right to vote and bring to power young leaders,” asserts Aamer Javed, a city youngster who was recently elected the general secretary of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) in the AP region. A city youngster like any other, 25year-old Aamer, is a regular at the most happening parties and is known to the city’s animal lovers as a very competent pet store owner. Accepting the responsibility of representing all students from Andhra Pradesh, the youngster says with a mature smile, “Yes, youngsters do have to make sacrifices and compromise on family and personal business interests, hobbies and catching up with friends.” For someone whose main aim in his political career would be to involve youth actively in politics, the way the Congress works is the best match he could find. “This is the only party that allows elections for youth leaders,” he points out. Aamer is affected by the general apathy of the youth towards social issues. “In a country with 60 per cent of the population consisting of educated youth in the age group of 18 to 30, a real change will come about when these minds are tapped and the stereotype of a politician is finally broken,” he says. Many NSUI members have gone on to join mainstream national politics through the Indian Y o u t h Congress.

Heading the team is Jayanti Chandran Ram, a documentary film-maker based at Canada. “It was during one of my journeys to India to study about ayurveda that I came to know about this interesting project by Dr Sethumadhavan in Palapuram who had
tasted success when he treated a 92-year-old,” says Jayanti. Interestingly, this time, it is a 64-year-old film-maker, Rajendra Patil from Baroda, who had come forward to try out the 90-day Kudichikitsa treatment. Patil, who had his spleen removed, has been afflicted with a series of health problems including fibrosis of the lungs. Dr Sethumadhavan, chief doctor at the Padinharekkara Ayurveda and Hilary Research Centre, Pryor is Ottapalam, says he working with has been doing cinmatographer research in this field Vasanth G. Kutty for decades. He says on the documentary attempts to construct similar kudis — the
word kudi means hut — had largely been failures before he managed to come up with a permanent one. He adds, “The patient has to reside within the kudi all alone for a long period (between 45 days to nine months) and survive on just medicines and milk.” Sethumadhavan adds, “He will be attended by a doctor three times a day, while a nurse will reside with the patient throughout the period.” It is a tough ask but what’s at stake is big and that explains why there have been inquiries about it from bigwigs from the Tamil film industry. The kudichikitsa was said to be very effective for 60-year-old Mohankumar who was a diabetic, when Sethumadhavan tried out this treatment for the first time. The nonagenarian monk from Mt Abu, Yughal Saran Maharaj, also was very happy with the results. In the case of Rajendra Patel, the experiment assumes a new form since he has a record of illhealth. Jayanti says they are not allowed to shoot what goes on inside the kudi as this would interfere with the treatment. So the team has to be content with doing web conferences with Sethumadhavan during the treatment phase. “By June, we will come to Ottapalam again to record and show the world the power of ayurveda.” Days before entering the kudi, Patil sounded excited: “It was an ayurvedic exponent in Mumbai who told me to try this out. I was depressed because of my many ailments. I have been reading about Kayakalpam and I am happy to be a part of this experiment. I am confident that the results will be good,” he said.

Keep your back straight and your shoulders rolled back when you do so. Now, as you exhale, push your feet onto the floor while you raise your body upright. This is one set. Do at least 10 such sets each day to reap the best results of this exercise. Benefits: Your pelvic bone grows older, faster than the other bones in your body.

At the Centre for Ocean Sciences in Maine, scientist Willie Wilson studies phytoplankton (tiny plant-like creatures living in the sea). He stores them in a refrigerator in test tubes of water. The water in the tubes is a murky green shade. At the bottom of each test tube is a whitish gooey substance which, as it turns out, is the carnage of a war. In the test tubes are millions of tiny single-celled algae called coccolithophores. They get their name from the fact that they deposit individual plates of calcium carbonate called coccoliths. A teaspoon of sea water can hold as many as a hundred thousand coccolithophores. They are greenish organisms with white plates of calcium carbonate deposits that look like an armour of chalk. The armour shields the little algae from viruses. The enemy viruses are shaped like diamonds and they jam their diamond tip into the armour of the coccolithophore, which in turn engulfs the virus. The virus then takes over the coc-

The battle for the survival of coccolithophore is important for us, as it leads to almost half the oxygen we breathe colithophore’s nucleus. Once this happens, the virus highjacks the cellular machinery and starts making more viruses. So, inside the coccolithophore, diamondshaped viruses start replicating and eventually leave the coccolithophore to in-fect other coccolithophores. The phytoplankton stored in Willie Wilson’s refrigerator is all infected algae. When the coccolithophore dies, the white chalk shield falls off, leaving the gooey whitish substance at the bottom of the test tube. So how can the coccolithophore survive the viruses? One trick they have developed is when they are infected they give off a chemical signal to warn others in the surrounding area. On receiving the signal, the others alter their gene expression to change their shields from chalk armours to jaggedly scale-like armours. The scales are only an adaptation to protect themselves from

Scientists have long wondered why honeybee queens, compared with other social insects, are so promiscuous — why mating with many males seems to result in a healthier hive. A new study suggests that it has to do with bacteria on and in the bees’ bodies and in the food they store in their hives. Researchers, in PLoS One, say the most promiscuous queens have more “good” bacteria in their hives, and this probably improves the health and nutrition of their colonies. They did their study by inseminating queen bees with semen from either 15 males or a single male. Colonies whose queens had more mates “had way more bacteria in them and had more probiotic bacteria, or good bacteria,” said Heather Mattila, an environmental biologist at Wellesley College and the study’s first author. — NYT

Come Tuesday and the stage 1 of archery World Cup will commence in Shanghai. The event would witness athletes from over 49 countries vying for top honours in the competition. For India, the likes of Jayanta Talukdar, Deepika Kumari and L. Bombayla Devi will be fighting it out in the recurve category, while Andhra Pradesh’s Isaiah Sanam, Jyothi Surekha and Chittibomma Jignas would want to put their best foot forward in the compound event. Jyothi, who trains at the Volga Archery Academy in Vijayawada, believes that the consistency she showed during practice would stand her in good stead at the Worlds. “It is a prestigious event and the competition is bound to be tough, but I hope to do well,” she said. The 16-year-old opined that China would be the biggest threat in the competition. “It is happening in their own backyard and they would definitely want to do well. Man U on the way to 20th title The race for the coveted English Premier League title has been absolutely riveting so far. The first half of the season saw a dominant performance by Manchester City, which was crowned by the 6-1 demolition of their illustrious neighb o u r s , Manchester United. With the way City were scoring goals, even against the ‘big clubs’, everyone would have believed that the Italian gaffer Roberto Mancini will give the blue half of Manchester a Premier League trophy after decades of misery. But then, Manchester United picked up their pace. And the one-man show, or in this case a one-team show, became a two-horse race. By December, it was very clear that the title will remain in the north-west side of England. Whether it will be on the famous red side of the city or the newly-rich blue half was anybody’s guessing. But post-Christmas, everything changed. City, who seemed to be in the driver’s seat for the title, suddenly found it difficult to score. They struggled even against the relegation contenders. And Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, as usual, hit their best form in the latter stages of the campaign. Now, after Manchester City’s loss to Arsenal this Sunday and United’s win over QPR, there is no doubt where the EPL title is going to land. With an 8-point lead over their local rivals, surely Ferguson is set to lift the club’s 20th title. United’s late surge for the title can be attributed to the excellent performances by Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, the ageless wonder Ryan Giggs and of course Wayne Rooney. Lingerie model Brooklyn Decker has revealed that when her tennis star husband Andy Roddick had first asked her out she ignored his request for months. Roddick – a former US Open champion and three times Wimbledon finalist – spotted Decker on a TV talk show and was instantly smitten. “He got his agent to call my agent,” the Daily Mail quoted the model and actress as saying. Flattered but cautious, she ignored his incessant requests for a date. “He wooed me… But it took five months until I called him back! And then that was that,” she said. Roddick won her over on their first date itself, which consisted of dinner and a comedy show. “I said, “This guy is a catch. According to the Gulf News, the song is a blend of old and new footages of Maradona, with cityscape views of Dubai and replays of Al Wasl’s goals. The song, written in Spanish and Arabic, has evoked mixed reactions in England and Argentina where the legend is both despised and revered in equal measure.
