Welcome Aboard - Bienvenue a board

Message from The President Dear Friends; My name is Harry Malawi; I am the proud parent of five wonderful children, and seven darling grandchildren. I am also honored to be the CEO, the President, the Owner and founder of a family business that has been operating Coach and Limousine Services in Ontario and Quebec since 1970. CDC is a member of the CDC Group of Companies, with head office near Toronto Pearson Airport. Among our sister companies are: CD Tour and Travel, CD Garage, CDC Auto Sales, and CDC Hospitality Service Inc. I have built this business on a simple philosophy in offering “Quality and Values” Customer service with a personal touch, through providing friendly reliable, efficient, safe and economical services. Many of my Customers, suppliers, colleagues and staff have become very good friends of mine over the years, and they can reach me anytime. Being an owner operator of a small business is just as exhausting and time consuming as it is gratifying. Small businesses are the ‘Engine of Canada’s Economy’. Some small business owners often venture out with only a dream in their hearts and many long and hard hours. From the Mom and Pop shop, to the taxi and limousine owners, some barely make it; some succeed beyond their wildest dreams, while sadly many others fail with terrible consequences. During the past 2 decades, small business had suffered a great deal of setbacks due to the whirlwind global economy and the tragic events that followed. CDC was no exception, however, with our Customer’s loyalties and support, we managed to weather the storm, survive and prosper. The primary reason behind CDC’s success is our Customer’s commitment and our suppliers’ mutual understandings and respect, last but not least, our employees’ loyalties and devotions. Our employees are the most valuable assets. I am truly blessed to work with very well mannered and loyal professionals that Work with us, Not for us. I have always considered them an extension to my family. I am pleased to present you with this issue of our “Welcome Aboard Magazine” to enlighten you and introduce you to our friendly professional team, our large impressive fleet and our variety of services. I am positive that this magazine will answer many of your inquiries and questions. However, should you need any further information, have comments or a concern; please do not hesitate to contact me anytime at your convenience. Our toll free # is: 1-877-725-8977 and our 24 hour dispatch phone line is: 416- 233-3333 or send me an e-mail at: [email protected] In closing, on behalf of CDC management and staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your sincere interest and look forward to continue serving you and working with you. I would also like to re-assure you that, we here at CDC will always endeavor to accommodate all your tours, travel and transportation needs, with the best service and at the lowest prices possible. Remember: CDC will match and beat any competitive prices, with the best value-for-money ever and I am confident that CDC will meet and exceed all your expectations. CDC is a family affair and you have our Word on it, “From Father, to Son, to Grandson” Best wishes to you and yours have a Safe & Happy Holiday Season & May God Bless you all...!

Welcome Aboard - Bienvenue a board

elcome aboard Canadian Delta Coach and Limousine Service operating as: CDC-Crew Transport. Canadian Delta Coach is a member of the CDC group of companies, which includes; First Choice Limousine, CD Tour and Travel, CD Garage (a Public Garage specialized in medium and heavy duty limousines and buses), CDC Auto Sales, and CDC Hospitality “Your One Stop Shop” for all your delayed passengers and transportation needs. One Phone Call... Does it all”. CDC is proud and excited to launch this new edition of “Welcome Aboard Magazine” for your reading and entertainment pleasure, and we hope that it will enlighten you, and familiarize you with many of our services and products. CDC prides on providing luxury, efficient, reliable, safe and economical transportation means.

CDC was founded in 1970 by Mr. Harry Malawi with merely two vehicles. After graduating from Central Airway College with a pilot license, Mr. Malawi began to look for employment. Unfortunately, as with most new graduates, Mr. Malawi was not able to get a job right away, due to what many employers referred to as “Lack of Canadian experience”. He then asked himself; “How the heck can I get any experience, if no one is willing to give me a chance to prove myself...?” So he decided to venture out into the business world on his own. Mr. Malawi started in the transportation business, focusing mainly on taking care of the Airlines’ Crew Transport service. He familiarized himself with the Airlines’ needs and he

accommodated them to the best of his ability, at the lowest prices. As a result of his clients’ satisfaction and their good word of mouth, his business became quite successful, and he grew and expanded into several other small

businesses in the tour and travel service industry. Despite Mr. Malawi’s hectic schedule in managing his businesses and family obligations, he did not forget his community. He got involved in many community venues and he volunteered and helped out on many events and projects whenever possible. He also volunteered on many charitable boards, associations, labour unions, organizations, and social clubs in different capacities. Under the direction of Mr. Malawi, CDC also volunteers their services to many organizations and group for many fund-raising events and worthy causes such as; The United Way, The Sick Children Foundations, and several other community’ fund raising drives. Mr. Malawi believes that you must do your good deeds and support your community and somehow you will get it back and God will provide. “Karma” CDC has an excellent business relationship with their clients and they believe that if they can make their Customers profitable by reducing their costs and make them look good, they too will also look good and profit. CDC even helps out some of

their struggling clients whenever possible by offering their service at or below costs. Today, CDC owns and operates a large impressive fleet of late model, luxury vehicles of different types, makes, models and sizes to suit every need, occasion, and budget. CDC provides its services either on demand or on an annual contract basis, and they accepts bookings from travel

agency’s and other affiliate coach companies, with agents’ booking fees and percentage commissions. Like many other coach operators, CDC is a family operated business and its service is a family affair. Mr. Malawi’s family helps out and Sam Malawi manages the business on a daily basis as the Vice President and Executive Director of CDC. Mr. Malawi hopes that his grandchildren will also follow his footsteps and get involved with CDC business. Whatever your needs and budgets are, CDC will diligently work with you, and custom make a plan to ensure that all your requests are accommodated promptly and efficiently. Welcome Aboard - Bienvenue a board

Our Employees Makes the Difference… They Work With us …Not for Us

At CDC we consider all our employees as an extension to our family. Our employees work with us, not for us. Since the early beginning, CDC had the honour and pleasure in training

and working with thousands of employees. Many of them have either become owners operators, of other businesses, or have gone to more rewarding and less demanding jobs, while others

decided to retire. Today our employees enjoy the full benefits of working together as one team, and they all care about each other and work together and socialize with each other in harmony.

CDC provides many employees benefits and incentives, and organizes and sponsor several annual appreciation events and celebrations, in order to recognize them and reward them.

CDC has been very fortunate to have so many success stories with our employees who got trained by CDC, and later on became the most valuable employees. CDC is humbly proud and honoured to present you with two of those success stories:

his colleagues at CDC were not Canadian born, and they too have some sort of an accent. Jack also found out that CDC is a family owned and operated company, and everyone is treated like brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. He felt very comfortable working with CDC as one of their sons. He also realized that everyone has the same opportunity to work with CDC regardless of their race, color, religion or accent. The owner of CDC Mr. Malawi strongly believes that it does not matter who you are, or where you come from; you too could have a place in his company, as long as you are willing to work and learn. Jack also realized that everyone at CDC works as a team, and they care about each other and everyone is committed to CDC’s success. Jack said; “Mr. Malawi believes that our employees are our ambassadors, and their success is CDC’s success”. Mr. Malawi always gives us confidence and praise and he always encourage us to believe in ourselves our own faith and somehow God will provide. “I see him as a friend, a fatherly figure, and an honest, caring, optimistic and a hard working boss”. Jack added. Today Jack has many responsibilities and positions and he is one of the most valuable employees. CDC relies on him in

every aspect; you could call him “Jack of all Trades” in its most positive meaning. Since his affiliation with us, he has been successfully trained him to be dispatcher, limo and a bus driver, accountant, tour guide and a ‘meet-and-greet’ person, as well as a public relations officer and an English Chinese translator. CDC has also sponsored him to get his landed immigrant status, and he is now proud to be a Chinese Canadian Landed Immigrant and he looks forward to becoming a Canadian Citizen.

Mr. Malawi. Marla always had a dream to go to college, and CDC encouraged her and facilitated the opportunity to fulfill her dream. So after four years of working with CDC, Marla was enrolled at Humber College, while she kept her job with CDC While she was attending Humber College, CDC also accommodated her working hours and duties to suit her college study. Two years later, she graduated with an executive assistant diploma with honors. Marla recalls that one of her College professors, who was very impressed with her knowledge, had once asked her if she had attended any formal postsecondary education, prior to Humber and she proudly replied “Yes, CDC College”. One of CDC most proud moments was when Marla invited Mr. Malawi and her office manager Kathy to attend her graduation commencement, as her family members. This kind of CDC goodwill, through caring and training our employees goes a long way in bringing tremendous staff loyalties and devotions. At CDC we truly believe that investing in our employees through dedicating our time and resources, is an investment in Canada’s future.

Jack is one of CDC Success Stories

Jack came to Canada about 8 years ago with a student visa. Upon his graduation from Centennial College, with an Accounting and Computer diploma, he needed to get some co-op experience. So, his counselor placed him with CDC. When he first started with CDC he was very nervous, because he thought that his Chinese accent may affect his working ability, and he thought that may not last more than 3 months. However, he soon found out that his accent had nothing to do with his job and would not have to worry. Jack also found out that many of

Marla is another CDC Success Story

Marla also joined CDC about nine years ago, from a challenging background, as an office assistant, without any previous office experience. Being a very good natured person, enthusiastic and eager to learn, Marla was trained by CDC to be a dispatcher, a bookkeeper, a public relation officer and an executive secretary for

more of Our Specialities... IROP-delayed pax SERVICE

No one likes to have any delay or inconvenience any passenger. Unfortunately delays are a fact of life. Delays can and will happen anytime due to any reasons beyond the Airlines control, such as but not limited to, bad weather, technical or human factors such as over bookings. CDC understands that it is not whether you have a delay or not, that matters... Rather it is how soon you deal with such delay that counts. When a delay occurs, it usually happens at the worst time and worst conditions, and it becomes overwhelming for many airlines and their staff. That’s

where CDC strength, expertise and experience play an important role. CDC extensive experience and valuable resources, which includes; fully trained staff, 24/7 dispatch, with a head office and yard minutes away from Pearson Airport, makes it easier for CDC to ease your staff stress and burden and accommodate all your delayed passengers needs in a timely manner. CDC has built its reputation in providing efficient and reliable service and we can respond to any delay request within 30 minutes. For more information please call us at 416-233-3333.

AD-HOC Crew movements

Every airline requires to accurately plan and track flight and crew movements. Planning flight schedules and crew roster is usually a demanding task, which requires the use of knowledge from a variety of resources. The planned schedules are subject to disruptions on day of operations due to factors that range from weather to non- availability of resources. The objective is always to minimize disruptions and carry on business as usual. Integrated information flow is thus essential between various departments and providers for efficient management of airline operations. CDC knows

Safety is our #1 Concern At CDC, the safety and comfort of our passengers, our drivers and the public is our number one concern. This is why we are extremely vigilant when it comes to safe driving practices and daily vehicles inspections and maintenance. We have our own garage facilities that are open 24 hours a day 365 days a year, staffed by licensed mechanics and maintenance professionals and wash personal to ensure that all of our vehicles meet and exceed the most stringent safety standards of any maintenance procedures or guidelines. Our vehicles are inspected daily before it leaves our yard to ensure continuous safe, secure and uninterrupted service. As part of our strict mandate, CDC drivers also receive continuous training and updates and they are required to attend all CDC mandatory monthly safety meetings and adhere to all periodic and random drug and alcohol testing as required by law. CDC employs

many outside professionals and safety consultants from police departments and insurance companies to previous inspectors and safety auditors such as Mr. Zafar. CDC is also governed by various government agencies’ rules and regulations and has to go through several mandatory semi annual and spontaneous inspections and audits. We are humbly proud to say that our safety ratings with the Ministry of Transportation have been rated as: “EXCELLENT”. ONE OF CDC SISTER COMPANY

CDC HOSPITALITY SERVICE INC. CDC Hospitality was established four years ago, in response to the huge and frequent demands from our corporate clients and Airline companies. The main objective for CDC Hospitality was and continues to provide our Customers with a “One Stop Shop” service for all their group conventions, employees’ training seminars, and for the Airlines’ delayed passengers service (IROP). The owner and president of CDC, Mr. Harry Malawi, has been helping the Airlines with their delayed passengers, in providing hotels, banquet halls, meals and accommodations, upon short notice on an unofficial basis. Finally Mr., Malawi realized the need for a dedicated company that understands the urgencies of providing efficient, economical and prompt service, upon short notice, where one phone call does it all. No one likes to have any delays, or to inconvenience any passengers, unfortunately delays in the tour and travel industry is a fact of life. Delays can and will happen at anytime due to reasons beyond the industry’s control, such as bad weather, major technical or human factors such as over bookings etc. Mr. Malawi understands that it is not whether you have a delay or not, it is how you deal with such delay that matters. When a delay occurs, it usually happens at the worst time and worst conditions, and it becomes overwhelming to many airlines’ staff. That’s where CDC Hospitality’s strength, expertise and experience play an important role. CDC Hospitality’s extensive experience and valuable resources, which includes; fully trained staff, a 24 hour dispatch service with a head office minutes away from Pearson Airport, along with several associates and partners in the hotels, motels, banquet halls and tour, travel and transportation operators, makes it easier for CDC to ease your staff’s stress and burden and accommodate all your delayed passengers in timely manner. CDC Hospitality has built an excellent relationship with many partners and established major accounts and negotiated an excellent deals and rates on hotel rooms, meals and transportations, where we can pass the savings on to you our customers. CDC Hospitality has fully trained professional agents and staff to handle your delays on site and accommodate your passengers to the fullest. Although, CDC is available to serve you anywhere in Ontario, we mainly focus on Pearson Airport and the GTA. 18

Toronto Celebrates Dutch Heritage Month Since Ontario government passed “Bill 166” last year proclaiming May as “Dutch Heritage Month” in Ontario, the Toronto KLM office at the Airport, headed by Mr. Karan Deswal, Director of Stations, Toronto and Western Canada for Air France/ KLM has been celebrating this joyful occasion with an annual gala reception. The act, which was introduced by the Dutch-born, former Ontario Deputy Premier, the Hon. Elizabeth Witmer, who was serving as MPP for KitchenerWaterloo, received unanimous approval, and all the members of Ontario legislation at Queens Park, gave glowing reports of the role of the Dutch Canadians who have settled in Ontario and chose Ontario as home. The Dutch Ambassador for Canada the Hon Wim Geerts warmly welcomed the concept of an annual Dutch Heritage Month, which KLM has been adopting on behalf of all Canadians. Canadians now gets to celebrate the “Dutch Heritage Month” in Ontario, thus showing the special ties between Canada and the Netherlands, in sharing common history and heritage. The Netherlands also celebrates its

how proud she is to ‘be born Dutch’ and adopting Canada as her home. The Dutch Consul General, Mr. Hans Horbach reiterated the fact that the Netherlands is the third largest investor in Canada after the U.S.A. and the United Kingdom, stressing that it is a “large footprint by a country the size of Lake Ontario”. He also emphasised the significant role played by KLM at the airport in connecting Canada independence and liberty, along with the heroic efforts of the Canadian Forces, with a national holiday known as “Liberation Day” which takes place annually on May 5th each year. The “Dutch Heritage Month”, takes this strong bond one step further, between the Canadians and the Dutch. Again this year, KLM hosted the celebration, on 16th day of May 2012, for the second year in a row, at Toronto Pearson Airport’s “Pyramid Room” in Terminal 3. The event was well attended by

many dignitaries, from the Council General of the Netherlands to many politicians and prominent Canadians, including GTAA, CEO Mr. Howard Eng, along with members of his management and

staff. Many of KLM’s colleagues from other airlines and service providers also attended the event, as well as many members of the Dutch and Canadian Communities. Representatives from the tour and travel industry at the Airport, and

the Media were also on-hand. Everyone was welcomed and greeted by the event organizers of the KLM team, some who dressed for the occasion in a special Dutch costume. CDC Also Joined BAR CANADA ANNUAL MEETINGS BAR CANADA was original founded in 1975 as AARC and incorporated in 1978 as a non-profit organization under federal statute. Recognition is given to the following European carriers operating in Canada at the time in alphabetical order: Air France, Alitalia, Iberia, KLM, SAS, for having taken the initiative and dedicated their subsequent time and efforts towards the foundation of the Association in 1978 at Montreal. They were soon joined by many other carriers, both serving in Canada and maintaining sales offices here. Carriers from Asia/Pacific started to join this group in the early 90ies. The purpose of the Association, other than furthering international goodwill, is to assist members of the airline industry in Canada in their dealings with members of both Federal and Local Government Departments and to protect the interests of Airlines in Canada with regards to matters ranging from immigration to taxation, as well as airport administration and regulations concerning environmental matters of interest to carriers operating to/from

Canada or having sales offices in Canada. The Board of Airlines Representative in Canada BARCA is a partnership of Airlines which have a street address in Canada. The growing complexity in aviation results in an increasing importance of Bar Canada. On one hand it has a service and consultant function; on the other hand it provides the member airlines with information to improve their professionalism on the market. CDC is a proud sponsor of BAR Canada and has been attending and covering their annual meeting for the past two years. The last meeting was held in Toronto on Nov. 29th at

the Crown Plaza Hotel and was well attended by The Hon Mayor of Mississauga and GTAA president Mr. Howard Eng. CDC was also on hand to participate and cover the event.

Facts about Niagara Falls Niagara Falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Nearly 20 million tourists, visit Niagara Falls each year with its magnificent charm and majestic quality. Although the Falls flow from the American side the best view is from the Canadian side. The Falls are about 99 meters wide, and the deepest section is about 58 km in length and its natural outlet extends from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The elevation of the Niagara River

is just below the falls, and it is so deep it equals the height of the falls above 52 meters. The upper Niagara River extends 35 km from Lake Erie to the Cascade Rapids which begin one kilometer upstream from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. At Grand Island, the Niagara River divides into 2 channels, the West channel, known as the Canadian or Chippewa Channel, and the East channel, known as the American or Tonawanda Channel. The Chippewa Channel is approximately 17.7 km in length and varies from 610 to 1220 meters in width. The water speed ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 metres per second and this channel carries approximately 60% of the total river flow. The Niagara Gorge extends from Niagara Falls 11 km downstream to the foot of the escarpment at

Queenston. There are about 500 other waterfalls in the world that are “taller” than Niagara, however, some of the tallest falls in the world have very little water flowing over them. The combination of height and volume of Niagara River makes Niagara Falls so beautiful. More than 168,000 cubic meters of water go over the crest-line of Niagara Falls every minute during peak daytime tourist hours. The Canadian Horseshoe Falls drops an average of 57 meters into the Lower Niagara River. The crest-line of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls is approximately 670 meters wide. The plunge pool beneath Niagara Falls is 35 meters deep. The height of the American Falls ranges between 21 to 34 meters. This measurement is taken from the top of the falls to the top of the rock pile at the base, called the talus slope. The height of Niagara Falls from the

top of the falls to the river is 57 meters. The crest-line of the American Falls is approximately 260 meters wide, and the rapids above the fall reach a maximum speed of 40 km/ hr. The fastest speeds occur at the falls is about 100 km/hr that has been recorded at Niagara Falls. The water through the Whirlpool Rapids below the falls reaches 48 km/hr. The Niagara River is a connecting channel between two Great Lakes, Erie and Ontario. Niagara Falls has moved back 11 km in 12,500 years and may be the fastest moving waterfalls in the world. The Great Lakes

is the world’s largest surface freshwater system in the world, about 18% of the world’s supply. The volume of water in the Great Lakes would cover North America in about one meter of water. The water flows from streams and rivers that empty into the Great Lakes, from Lake

brown colour is clay, which contains suspended particles of decayed vegetative matter. It is mostly from the shallow eastern basin of Lake Erie

Superior down through Niagara to Lake Ontario, then into the St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean. Water always flows down to the sea, and the land slopes downward through the Great Lakes Basin from West to East, but Niagara River actually flows north. Today less than one percent of the water of the Great Lakes is renewable on an annual basis. The rest is a legacy from the last ice age, or “fossil” water. There’s still water in the Great Lakes because they rely heavily on replenishment renewal from precipitation (rain, sleet, snow, hail) and groundwater. The brown foam below Niagara Falls is a natural result of tons of water plummeting into the depths below. It is not dangerous. The

Limo Scene

“Over leather hill and carpeted floor Dale: a look at the luxurious landscape of a penthouse on wheels” By: Gary Michael Dault After a disastrous ride to the airport in a speedy and filthy stretched limo with an unprofessional Driver of unmentioned name limousine company, Gary Michael Dault, a freelance journalist and writer with Toronto Life magazine, decided to research out for the best in the luxury Limo Service. After calling and using several limousine companies in the area, he called Canadian Delta Coach and Limousine Services and spoke with Mr. Harry Malawi, President and CEO of CDC to fill him in on the ins and outs of the Limo business. After meeting Mr. Malawi, he found a new appreciation and respect for the limousine service industry. As well, after being chauffeured around by Mr. Harry Malawi, in one of his Luxury Limousines, Mr. Dault actually caught a small glimpse of what it might feel like to be a rock star or like the rich and famous. So he wrote an article in the Toronto Life Magazine. The Article was first published in Toronto Life Volume 24, in June 1990. The following is a portion of the article titled “Limo Scene” ..And so the stretch limo, which up until now I hadn’t really paid much attention to, begins to attain socioeconomic symbolism for me. I scribble in my notebook that the stretch limo is majestically redundant, aggressively out of place in our society, an icon of regal irresponsibility, the rolling epicenter of a spurious exclusivity. I identify for myself the limo’s puerile phallicism. At one point I announce rather grandly to a friend that riding in a stretch limo is like sighing through town in a gigantic pair of inhabitable sunglasses. Then it occurs to me that I ought to see how the limo people themselves feel about it. To that end 30

I call Harry Malawi, president and owner of First Choice Limousine Service, headquartered at the Skyline Hotel out by the airport. “C’mon out and talk to me,” says Harry Malawi. Malawi is a short, dark, energetic man, genial and rapid, the kind of guy you want to call “Harry” right off. Harry has an infectious twinkle in his eye. Five minutes with him and the whole idea of the stretch limo begins to lose some of its nastiness. “Look,” says Harry, “it’s a bad myth that the stretch limo is for the rich and famous. The rich don’t flash their money around like that. The stretch limo is for fun. Oh, of course it’s for business, too.

sticks” he offers his customers— the little tender touches that bring them back again and again. “Sixty per cent of my business comes by word of mouth,” Harry says, “so I treat people like kings and queens and hope they’ll call me again. C’mon, I’ll show you what I mean,” We leave the office and make our way out onto the endless tundra of the Skyline Hotel’s parking lot into a sunsetted evening made rather cinematic by the procession of screaming jetliners suddenly hurling themselves from the Skyline’s roof and settling heavily into a descending flight path through the orange sky, all of them bristling with wheels and extended flaps like giant android

I mean, a couple of real estate brokers will rent a limo for the day, install a fax machine, bring along their lap tops and take a couple of Hong Kong businessmen out for the whole day to look at properties. The limo is quiet, cool, private—a rolling office.” Mostly, though, the stretch limo is for fun. “We sell fantasies,” says Harry. Unlike the nightmare limo reluctantly piloted by my Russian friend, Harry’s limos are immaculate. As is his service. Harry takes great pride in what he refers to as the “carrot

eagles about to alight. Harry leads me over to this Brobdingna-gian car, an “Ultra” limo (an “Ultra” is eight metres long; a “Mega” is nine metres; one called “The American Dream” is even longer than that and features a helicopter landing pad on the roof), one of the forty limos Harry either owns and runs himself or franchises to somebody else. He unlocks his door, flicks a switch that simultaneously unlocks all the other doors. “Climb in,” says Harry. He closes the heavy door behind me and suddenly

it’s preternaturally quiet. The whistling roar of the jetliners overhead sounds like something on TV in another room. Harry hits another switch and the big car is ablaze with light. There is some ridiculously boyish excitement to all this. There is something about a sleek car twinkling with light on a soft city evening, all glitter and reflecting surfaces, that reawakens in this middle-aged cardboard heart something of the internal twelveyear-old, excited at car shows or euphoric at the prospect of a ride through the downtown streets, long after bedtime, in an uncle’s twotone Catalina hardtop with all the windows down. Bliss it was to be alive and to fancy technology an innocent helpmeet, friend to man and, particularly, to boy. Suddenly it’s that kind of evening again. “What did you mean about ‘carrot sticks?” I ask Harry. “Oh, it’s the little things, you know?” Harry tells me. “I pro-vide an umbrella, for example, and gloves. A customer orders a limousine to take him to the airport in the morning, I ask his wife or secretary what kind of coffee he likes, what paper he reads. The paper costs me thirty-five cents. The coffee costs me a dollar. For a dollar thirty-five, I’ve made the gentleman happy. Maybe I’ll get five dollars, maybe ten dollars tip. And maybe he’ll call me the next time. I even offer the customer a chocolate. You know,” says Harry, “like the chocolate the hotel puts on your pillow for when you come in at night.” Back in Harry’s office, I’d noticed three empty Dom Perignon bottles on the shelf behind him. I figured maybe they’d had a really expensive staff party. “You don’t give the customers Dom Perignon, do you?” I ask him. “They can order it ahead,” says Harry—almost apologetic that the stuff doesn’t come free even at a

Welcome Aboard - Bienvenue a board hundred bucks a bottle. “But, “says Harry, brightening, “they get a bottle of Henkell Trocken on ice— that’s on the house!” Harry fires up the big Cadillac and we pull slowly and regally out of the parking lot and onto the system of gnarled and interwoven freeways laced around and through the airport. “You can talk to me by using the intercom phone just behind your head,” Harry calls back, “or we can just shout back and forth.” We shout. I push buttons. I love to push buttons. One of them causes a little TV to rise up out of the plushy depths of the car. Another turns it on. Yet another button opens the sunroof. I push it and the soft, dark car is suddenly flooded with sunset and engulfed in jet stream. I close it again. “It’s more romantic just with stars and a moon,” Harry ventures. Right. A penultimate switch erects a thick glass barricade between me and Harry. I can see him, but I can’t hear him. The last switch reinforces the barricade with a screen of blackness that silently renders me entirely alone in this moving penthouse. Harry is gone. There’s nobody but me, moving through the world as if it’s a movie and I’m sitting still. A haven, a cocoon,

a womb with a view. I feel a bit like James Mason playing Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I press the switch again and the barricade slides away. I can see Harry again. The cone of silence is lifted. It’s like waking up from a dream “Everything about a limousine is different from a taxicab,” Harry tells me. “Basically it’s like running a diamond shop versus running a doughnut shop. The guy who runs the diamond shop makes a couple of sales a day and, you know, it’s worth it. The doughnut shop guy makes hundreds of little sales a day and it still doesn’t add up. Did you know there’s a whole etiquette the limo driver has to know? There’s a proper way to open and close a door, for example.” There is? “You knock first,” says Harry. “You never just open the door.” Silly visions of old Peter Arno cartoons from The New Yorker flood my mind, old-goat tycoons wrestling ineffectually with half-naked showgirls. That’s very discreet,” I tell Harry. “We sell discretion,” he replies happily. We sift quietly through the airport and are gazed at enviously by a long lineup of weary travellers waiting

for conventional airport limos. I confess to a feeling I am almost instantly embarrassed by—I actually son of got off on the stares (which ranged anywhere from respectful to hate-filled). I tell Harry this. “Sure,” says Harry. “It’s fun, huh? See. That’s it. We sell that feeling of being special. Hey, a little luxury, OK? It doesn’t hurt.” It is with something like genuine regret that I see us pulling back into the Skyline lot. The car stops and Harry walks the twenty or twentyfive metres around the car and stops outside my door. Then, discreetly, he knocks. I unfold myself out into the night. Back in the office, Harry fills me in on the nuts-and-bolts stuff. He draws a standard sedan on a piece of paper and then carefully cuts it in two with scissors, showing me just how stretched stretch limos can get. He shows me what it costs to make a stretch limo (about $45.000 for the standard car, $30.000 for the first cut and about $15,000 for each additional modular extension). He shows me the rates for renting one: seventy-five dollars for the first hour of a night on the town, forty dollars for each additional hour, depending on what

is required (whether or not, for example, you want Dom Perignon or whether you can make do with the complimentary Henkell). He tells me about maintenance, about insurance ($4,000 a year per car). “I guess stretch limos are mostly Cadillacs and Lincolns?” “Mostly.” says Harry. “There are some Mercedes-Benzes. We have a Rolls-Royce. Do you know,” Harry says, “that I’ve even seen a stretch Honda Accord and a stretch Lamborghini?” “That’s obscene,” I tell him. “Nevertheless,” says Harry settling back comfortably into his swivel chair.”So, this franchise idea being what it is, anybody could buy a limo business from you and set up for himself?” I ask him.”More or less,” says Harry. “Hey, speaking of franchises, you see where that big McDonald’s in Moscow serves 50,000 people a day? They’ve sold a billion hamburgers in the first month!” Harry suddenly gets this dreamy look in his eyes. and asks What...? “I ask him.” I was just thinking,” says Harry. “Maybe I could stretch a few Ladas and set up a branch over there.”

You won't believe what's behind these walls...
