Breakfast with Santa - On Saturday, December 7, our club will be providing pancakes, juice, and coffee to participants in the City of Leawood’s Breakfast with Santa event, which will be held at The Lodge at Ironwoods Park. The event will be split into two different sessions. Session I will be held from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM and Session II will be held from 10:30 AM to 12:00 noon. Each session will have a maximum of 250 participants. Lion Ken Habiger reports that both shifts have been filled, but if you would like to help, come on out as there is always room for more. Ironwoods Park is on the east side of Mission Rd at 147th St. December 10 - Christmas Party – Our annual Christmas Party will be held at Cinzetti’s Restaurant, 7201 W 91st St, Overland Park, starting at 6:00 p.m. We will be in the Mediterranean Room, a large private dining area, and will have full access to Cinzetti’s buffet, including salads, appetizers, entrees, deserts, and drinks. Cost of the event will be $20 per person, which includes the buffet, soft drinks, tea, and coffee. Alcoholic beverages will be available at an extra charge (to be paid for individually). Please send your reservations and payment ASAP to Big Lion Chris Wright, 6313 W 75th St, Apt 5, Prairie Village, KS 66204, or Treasurer Tom Shearer, 25770 West 127th St, Olathe, KS 66061. Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army – We have begun our largest activity of the year. Spots are still open. Our locations this year are:    

Wal-Mart at 119th & Metcalf Wal-Mart at 135th & State Line Wal-Mart at 156th & Metcalf HyVee at 95th & Antioch

The need is great here in the Kansas City area. This is as true this year as it was last

year and before that. The Salvation Army does make a difference. The money we collect stays in the KC area where we collect it. We are all volunteers and the Salvation Army has low administrative costs so the bottom line is that the money we collect goes to the people in need right here where we collect it. Please contact Lion Don Schultz at (913) 381-3592; [email protected] if you or a friend can help fill some of our empty spots. Benevolent Committee Actions – The Benevolent Committee, headed by Lion Tom Willy recommended, and the Board approved, the following contributions.        

Cub Scout Pack 3010 - $350 Community for Kids Food Program $250 Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation $500 6 Food Pantries for Holiday Assistance - $1,800 2 Melvin Jones Fellowships - $2,000 4 Leawood Lions 60th Anniversary Scholarships - $4,000 Kansas Lions Band Fund - $250 Kansas School for the Blind Braille Challenge - $250

60th Anniversary – The Leawood Lions Club celebrates its 60th Anniversary next year. Big Lion Chris Wright is soliciting suggestions for activities and events to help us make 2014 a special year for the Leawood Lions. Big Lion Chris is also requesting all Lions to search their files for old photographs or film of Leawood Lions engaged in Lion Club activities over the past 60 years. The Committee working on this project consists of Lions Harry Malnicof, Leroy Kashka and Chick Atwell. To date, the committee has made plans to hold the event at The Lodge in Ironwoods Park on April 22, 2014, recognize two Leawood Lions with Melvin Jones Fellowships, have a special slide show, possibly have a speaker, and much more.

reports that to date, receipts for Pancake Days total $4,962 and expenses were approximately $915. If you are still holding money from ticket sales or if you would like to make a contribution, please get it to Lion Tom as soon as possible. Special recognition is given to the following Lions who were the top ticket sellers/donators at this year’s Pancake Days: Jim Bays Gene Tinberg Tom Willy Bruce Deering

Pedia Vision Eye Testing Update – As reported earlier, Pedia Vision is an exciting new technology that allows us to provide vision screening for children. But did you know that our own Lion Jim Bays went a long ways in making this new screening tool available to our district by contributing $4,000 to the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation! Thank you Lion Jim for your generous contribution to the Kansas Lions.

President’s Report – Social Members: The Leawood Lions Club Board of Directors approved a category of "Social Member" that is slightly different than being welcomed as a guest. "Social Members" are welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings including dinner and our Special Dinners, such as Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Dinner, Valentine’s Day Dinner, and especially the upcoming 60th Anniversary Celebration on April 22, 2014. "Social Membership" is available for spouses and families of members that have passed on, former members, non-member volunteers from Bell Ringing and Pancake Days, and the friends and families of our Members. Lion Peggy Jacobson has issued an updated Club directory. If you have not yet received

your copy, plan on picking it up at the next meeting. Lion Peggy will have copies available at the Christmas party. Thank you Lion Peggy for the great job! Activity Reporting: Members are reminded to keep track of the time we spend on various Club and service activities and turn that information in at least monthly at the meetings or by sending it to our Secretary, Lion Joe Charmella. Lion Don Torizzo is chairman of our Eyeglasses for the Needy Program. Lion Don will coordinate our Club’s activities with those of the new KU Eye Center Club. If you know of someone needing help to get eyeglasses, contact Lion Don (913-400-3019). Lion Don Shultz is the Member Update Chairman. Please let Lion Don know about any members with health issues or needing assistance (such as a ride to the meetings, etc.). Lion Steve Everley is Chairman of our Youth Vision Screening Committee. The new District Pedia Vision equipment was demonstrated at our October 8th meeting. Lion Alan Callaway is moving to New Hampshire. Lion Chuck Schutty has agreed to be the new Lion Tamer.

Club Meetings November 12th Meeting: Major Mark Martsolf of the Salvation Army was our speaker. Major Martsolf cleverly used his magician skills to thank our club for our bell ringing activities in support of the Salvation Army. He stated that poverty in Johnson County the last 7 years has increased by 48 percent and the number of homeless in the county has increased by 38 percent. He also mentioned that the bell ringing goal for Johnson County this year is $300,000, and for the entire metropolitan area the goal is over $10 million. The Salvation Army partners

with 27 food pantries in Johnson County and provides shelter for the homeless at its facility in Olathe, KS.

A special Thank You to Lions Harry and Lois Malnicof for the very attractive and tasteful table centerpieces and tablecloths, Lions Peggy Jacobson and Steve Everley for the use of their plates, Lion Chuck Schutty for his work restocking the bar, Lion Rick Waldenmeyer for pitching in at the last minute to man the check-in table, the turkey carvers, and everyone who helped with the clean-up. Fellow Lions and guests your extra efforts contributed to make our Club’s first Thanksgiving dinner a very special evening for all. Thank you very much for all your contributions. the Leawood Lions Club and their guests got a head start on celebrating Thanksgiving with a special Thanksgiving Dinner arranged by Big Lion Chris Wright. Big Lion Chris had arranged with a local caterer to provide a turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings, for each table. One person at each table was designated to carve the turkey and serve other guests at the table. Lots of food was available and Lions and guests were able to take leftovers home for later enjoyment. A nice crowd Thanksgiving.

Also at the November 26th meeting, Big Lion Chris Wright announced that Lion Jim Bays will be honored as a Hall of Fame Award recipient by the Leawood Chamber of Commerce 2013 Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame Awards Luncheon on December 10. Lion Jim is receiving the award partly based on his volunteer community service with our own Leawood Lions Club.

Please remember our Lions who are ill by calling them or visiting.

As Big Lion Chris announces the Hall of Fame Award, Lion Jim Bays searches for a location to ring for the Salvation Army while his wife, Patty, looks on.
