It is with mixed emotions I’m letting you know that Area Captain Terri Ord will be retiring as California Field Staff at the end of December to spend more time with her family. Terri has been a vital part of our Field Staff team for several years and has done a GREAT job of reaching out to the chapters she services. She will continue to serve TOPS as a Retreat Director and, of course, will still be part of the area so we will see her around. Plans are underway to thank Terri for her service at the Banning workshop in February. CA State King, Dan Colby has accepted the position as Area Captain and will be working with Terri’s chapters beginning January 1st. He is excited about the prospect of meeting all of you. TOPS Rules A revised copy of the TOPS Rules will be found in your December issue of the TOPS News. Please remove it and keep it with your TOPS folder for reference. Chapters Care Recently TOPS President Barb Cady sent out an email to chapter leaders with some updates from the Board of Directors. One suggestion was made for chapters to have a NEW

MEMBER COACH. This “coach” would make sure that a new member receives the proper materials and explains them to her. She sits with the new member and explains what is happening during the meeting and touches base with them between meetings to encourage them. What a great way to make sure our new members feel welcome! Real People This month the spotlight is on a TOPS member who came to the aid of another member. Member Aveline Purvis (left) took a tumble at the Fall Rally in La Mirada and fellow member Roxanne Dingman came to her rescue. She immediately stopped the bleeding with ice packs and bandages and checked Aveline for ability to move before she helped her up. Throughout the day Roxie checked on Aveline to make sure she was okay. Both are members of CA 0075, La Habra Walking Challenge Update Thanks to everyone who is participating, we are off to a GREAT start in our Area Walking Challenge to walk 100,000 miles from October 1st – June 30th.

Not everyone walked, however and some of those miles were earned by chair exercises, swimming, bicycling, aerobics, etc. (Remember, for the purpose of this contest, one half hour of moderate exercise equals one mile.) For those of you who don’t believe you can exercise, check out Olga Smallwood (dressed in black) in the photo below.

Olga is 92 years young. Each day she walks for 30 minutes and does exercises at home for an additional 30 minutes. As if that is not enough, she also leads chair exercises at CA 187, Chula Vista for 10 minutes every week. Happy Holidays! Holiday planning and festivities can be very time-consuming and stressful. It is when our reserves are at our lowest that we have difficulty sticking to our food plans.

We are already 20% to our goal!

As enjoyable as the holidays are they are but short term in relation to the rest of our lives.

During October, 55 chapters reported miles walked totaling 20,441.31.

Plan now to incorporate some “me time” during the month…a time to relax, refresh and enjoy the season.

Winning chapters for the month are: San Diego Rally Area CA 0721, Chula Vista – 37.51 avg per member

Ontario Rally Area CA 2101, Banning – 41.1 avg per member

La Mirada Rally Area CA 2015, Santa Ana – 85.5 avg per member Each of these chapters will have a chance to win a FREE rally package for next year’s Fall Rallies. The drawing will take place in July 2014.

In the long run, the holidays are not about the food, decorations and other trappings, but a time to reconnect with those you love and enjoy the season. This year why not make your holiday “treat” a lower number on the chapter scale??? Wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season and the best of everything in the coming year. Margie
