What is the University of Scouting? The University of Scouting is an adult leader’s learning adventure! It is an action-packed, fun-filled single day of supplemental training where you choose the sessions you wish to take. Sessions are led by experienced volunteers and professionals who will help you enhance your ability to deliver a fun and exciting program to the Scouts. The University of Scouting offers a wide range of unique adult leader training courses: College of Cub Scouting: Cub Scout leaders can pick up tips on “Making the Most of your Den Chief ” or “Keeping Chaos from Controlling your Den” or one of many other courses filled with tips, hints and fun suggestions. College of Boy Scouting: Boy Scout and Varsity Scout leaders can learn about any of BSA’s high-adventure bases (including The Summit) or receive some pointers on “Meaningful Scoutmaster Conferences” among a variety of topics. College of Venturing: Venturing advisors can spend the day on Venturing-specific topics. Venturing Youth may also participate in the new-for-2014 Venturing Academy! College of Commissioner Science: Commissioners have a slate of offerings to help you earn a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate of Commissioner Science. College of General Studies: Leaders and parents can take other general studies topics which span a variety of Scouting programs. * Qualified youth may attend “The Trainer’s EDGE” course (see www.c10edge.org for qualifications) and any Venturing Scout may attend the Venturing Academy Who should attend University of Scouting? YOU should attend for sure, along with hundreds of your fellow Scout leaders from Circle Ten Council. All registered leaders, potential leaders and parents that are looking for the very best program for their Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers will find a variety of class sessions relevant to their position in Scouting. When is the next session? Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 7:00am until 5:00pm. See the “Course Catalog” for additional schedule details. Registration opens at 7:00am, opening ceremonies at 8:00am with the first class beginning at 8:30am. The last class ends at 5:00pm. The day’s schedule was extended to accommodate the extra time between classes and expanding lunch to a full hour.

Where will the University be held? We are pleased to return to Southern Methodist University again this year. You may access the SMU information page here and the “Course Catalog” has additional campus information, parking and building assignments. How do I register? The January 2014 session will be available for online pre-registration via CampMaster beginning October 2013. Pre-registration will close December 6, 2013. University of Scouting registration flyers will be distributed at Roundtables and other District meetings beginning in October. The “Course Catalog” contains instructions on how to access CampMaster and schedule classes. What’s included in my registration fee? In addition to a full day of fun, filled with interesting class sessions, handouts and fellowship with other leaders, everyone will receive lunch, certificate via email and a commemorative 2014-edition patch. After the event, notes from many of the sessions will be available online. Regular pre-registration is $40.00 which is valid from November 1, 2013 until November 31, 2013. Twilight registration is then $45.00 until the close of pre-registration on December 6, 2013. Late and Walkup registration is $50.00. Save some money and register early! The fee remains the same whether you take one class or a full day of classes! Are there any Prerequisites to attend? Generally no, although you should be registered in the Boy Scouts of America. The Dean of each College will specify any additional prerequisites in the “Course Catalog”. For those working towards a degree in the College of Commissioner Science you must download, complete and bring the following with you: 1. http://www.c10univ.org/files/DCS_Award_Knot_Requirements_June_2008.doc 2. http://www.c10univ.org/files/DCS_Knot_Tracking_Worksheet.xls How do I dress for the University of Scouting? The BSA field uniform appropriate for your Scouting program. Business casual is appropriate for nonuniformed leaders and parents. Venturing Scouts should wear their Crew uniform. I plan to staff or be an instructor, when do I register? All currently identified instructors and staff will be contacted directly and will be able to enroll at a reduced rate. Please be sure to register as soon as possible. What if I have questions, suggestions or comments? Please review the “Course Catalog” for full details. If you still have questions, suggestions or comments please contact the Circle Ten Council University of Scouting Chancellor, Ramsay Ellis, via email at [email protected].

Thank you to the 502 units who participated in the Popcorn Sale this year! We appreciate the volunteers and Scouts that participated. The funds from the sale go to support your local unit’s program as well as supporting the Circle Ten Council’s daily operations, allowing us to provide the best Scouting programs possible! Your time to Scouting does not go unnoticed! Reminder: Settle your popcorn account on or before December 6th to receive your full commission. You may settle your account at either of our council offices during normal business hours. SCOUTING FOOD F O R

HELP SCOUTS FEED THE HUNGRY

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 15

As we approach the holiday season we are already surrounded by images of joy, excitement and celebration. But even in the midst of this festivity, thousands of people in our community are hungry with almost half of these being children. And, the need is growing every day. Through Scouting for Food, we have the opportunity to help alleviate this need. Through this cooperative effort, we will make this the largest food drive in the Circle Ten Council’s history. Our role will be two fold. On Saturday, February 8th, our Scouts will pass out collection bags throughout the council, describing the need and announcing the food collection the following week. On February 15th, our Scouts will again canvas the neighborhoods, knocking on doors and collecting food that will be delivered directly to food pantries within your community. For other ways to help, such as assisting with the unloading at the pantries, please contact your unit leader, district’s Scouting for Food Chair, or your district executive. We know that your unit calendar is full, but this is a worthy cause and we urge your unit to be a part of it – and to enable your leaders and Scouts to be a part of it. Your district Scouting for Food Chair will be contacting units soon for your commitment. More information is available on http://www.circle10.org/scouting-food.

Special thanks to our directors Todd Dixon, Tim Andersen and Russell Ratterree for their leadership. Also special thanks go out to Kim Huff, Wendy Gibbons and Kathy Davis for their extraordinary help. All of Scouting got a big boost from the performance. TRINITY WOODS continued We are all loosening our belts in the Trinity Woods District. With Thanksgiving, the end of the popcorn sale and our growth in youth served, is it any wonder? We finished November with over 11% more youth than we finished December last year. Way to go Scouters on reaching more youth. As the new month starts we all have visions of stockings and sugar plums but let’s not forget Scouting is a year round program. December does quiet down but keep in touch with your unit and be sure and go to the parties. Speaking of party, our December Roundtable will be a party of sorts. It is a Dutch oven cook-n-share. Folks from all over the district will be bringing their best, Dutch oven style, to Roundtable and there will be a little sampling going on I am sure. Not that Scouts are competitive or anything but don’t be surprised if there is not some kind of recognition for best or worst or something. Just be sure to keep the Cub Scout motto in mind when preparing yours and “Do Your Best”….. (Please). As we break over the New Year remember that University of Scouting is on January 4th. You can learn about almost any Scouting topic you could imagine at this event. It is on the beautiful Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas, TX and registration includes your lunch (no not from a Dutch oven….. Unless you might be taking that class, then who knows….). Be sure and go to the Council website Circle10.org and follow the links to the Campmaster registration for the event. The longer you wait the more it will cost. Remember that every youth deserves a “Trained” leader. There sure is a lot about food in this issue and this paragraph is no different. This is a shameless plug for the 2nd Annual Trinity Woods District Dinner. It will be at the First United Methodist Church in Athens, Texas at 225 Lovers Lane, Athens, TX. It is on Saturday January 19th at 6:30 PM. Come let’s fellowship and celebrate our 2013 Scouting adventure together and toast off the 2014 year with a big HUZZAH!...

Okay, one last food thing. Scouting for Food is just around the corner in February. There will be more information on this awesome way in which Scouting gives back to its’ communities. We still need qualified persons to be unit commissioners to help make sure we have phenomenal programs and retention in all our units. Please contact Sheri Robson with any leads on Scouters from the past that are in the community that you feel would be a good commissioner. Again contact Sheri Robson at [email protected] with any names for unit commissioners or roundtable commissioners (including your own). We would like to have your email as well so if you think we don’t have it yet, email Frank just to say hi and he will add it to the list at [email protected] and to go to the Council’s web page and submit your email there to make sure you get the Council newsletter and any important news and announcements. We still need each unit to have a blurb each month about the cool things that are happening with each unit and desperately need someone besides the district executive to write our newsletter. (Seriously have you read this stuff)? We want our articles to be like the rest of Scouting, volunteer driven. Any units wishing to be in next month’s newsletter should forward articles to Frank Griffin, District Executive, until we can get someone else to journal the adventures of our district. The deadline for the next newsletter is December 20, 2013. As always I remind myself that it is the 1,000,000 or so volunteers that make Scouting what it is for the 2,000,000 youth we all serve. I know the Scouters in the Trinity Woods District are true Rock Stars!!!!!!! It is an exciting time in the Trinity Woods District. Keep your eyes on us and watch us grow.
