Subaru News The new Gen 4 2014 WRX has made its world début in November at the Tokyo and Las Angeles Motor Shows. At this stage it is only available in a sedan body, based on the current model Impreza, featuring wide guards and a new aggressive grille with LED low beam head and running lights, also the taillights are LED. The new body is slightly bigger and is 20kg heavier and 40% stiffer. The wheelbase is longer making more interior room, the doors open wider for easier access. The engine is similar to the new Forester XT, a 2.0 litre direct injection turbo with increased power output of 199Kw @5600 rpm, torque 349Nm between 2000 to 2500 rpm. Transmission is a 6 speed manual or for the first time a CVT auto with an 8 speed manual mode, power steering is now electric Also on display were 4 new concept models; The 1st the Levorg a sports tourer wagon, a similar size to an Impreza. It is powered by a 1.6 or 2.0 litre direct injection turbo. Reports say it is production ready for a 2014 Japanese release and could be a possible WRX wagon replacement. The 2nd concept was the Cross Sport a smaller model to fit in under the current XV. The 3rd concept was the new Liberty/Legacy, also reports say it is a bigger model and will be ready for release in 2015. The 4th concept was the Crossover 7, a bigger 7 seat wagon said to be the future Tribeca replacement, which will end production in January 2014. At the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, Subaru displayed another concept sedan called the Viziv it has a AWD transmission and is powered by a boxer diesel hybrid. Blackbutt Range Trip – 13 Oct 2013 With all the fine dry weather continuing we had a good roll up of 11 cars, at the meeting point in Kilcoy. They consisted of David Bargen down from Rockhampton on one of his Brisbane trips, driving his lifted turbo EJ 20 AWD auto L Series wagon, newly elected Club President Dave Gibson lifted Forester, he had his dad Noel along with his camera at the ready, Jan K lifted auto Forester GT, Paul Ashton auto Forester, Joe and Cheryl Reeve lifted auto Outback, Morgan In his new look, lifted Brumby, just for a change he has removed the canopy, new members Garry and Shelly Coombs Forester diesel, they joined up at the October meeting, Grant and Debbie Thomas Mitsubishi Pajero IO, Paul Salopek Nissan Navara and dog Jess, Bob Beatty Mitsubishi Pajero, he made the trip up from the Gold Coast via Plainlands to collect some friends for the day. We soon left a busy Kilcoy, there was a big classic car show being held at the Showgrounds. Around Linville we hit the dirt for the climb up the range. We all thought with a storm going through the area late in the week, the track would be a bit wetter, also the creeks did not have much more water in them. At the top we took a detour to check out another track that would lead back to the highway. Not far past the turn off we came across a Nissan Patrol towing a car trailer, he was a local about to try and recover his stolen bent up Suzuki Sierra. As it turned out he off-road raced a Sierra and was in Coffs Harbour for the recent WRC and off-road events. He was able to back off the track to let us through; he did say the track has become badly washed out further on. He was right as we were all soon back after turning around and wanting to get past again. He kindly backed off the track again to let us through. I don't think he was expecting to come across a convoy of cars. Just before we turned back on to the bitumen we stopped at a viewing point that overlooks all the now completed major land slip repair work that happened to the highway in the 2011 floods. Next stop was the park in Benarkin for a morning tea stop. Then it was on the dirt again going through Joe's water hole, he got stuck in it on a trip a few years ago. Luckily it was pretty dry this time. Finally we came to Morgan's hole, on the same trip Morgan dropped a wheel in this giant hole and had 3 wheels well off the ground. There is a famous front cover photo in SubaNews of it. No one fell into it this trip, but we still had to do some road work to get down through the gully and across the creek. Back on the bitumen we stopped for lunch at a rest area on a nice creek, with a deep swimming hole just before Yarraman. Soon after Yarraman we were back on the dirt again heading northwest. This section had been freshly graded, even the creek crossing that was badly damaged in the floods, was easy going this time. With us making good time we decided to head for the 7 mile diggings area for a look, Jan and Gibbo went down the harder track while the rest of us took the easier way. We met up at the bottom and headed up through the rutted tracks towards a high point for some photos. From here we back-tracked to the top track that led out to the bitumen, again Jan and Gibbo took a harder track and this is where Gibbo hit a rock on a steep climb and bent the front the LH wish bone. By the time rest of us came back down to help out, Gibbo and Jan had already removed the wish bone and were heating it up with a blow torch and hitting it with a big hammer on a large bolder. Everyone who knows Gibbo knows he travels with all the right gear to fix these sorts of problems, tools, blow torch, 12 volt drill etc. The wish bone straightened up pretty well and was soon refitted and ready for the trip home. Our next stop was the servo in Nanango where some of us fuelled and aired up and bought some snacks. We also had another quick stop at the big coal drag line bucket for some photos; you can drive your car into it. At the Brisbane Valley Highway turn off we said our goodbyes to Joe and Bob. The rest of us continued on to our next stop at the BP Morayfield for a dinner break. From here we went our separate ways home. We all had a good day out in the bush. This report was combined effort by David Bargen SC 483 and David martin SC 180

p.s. Shelly and Gary Coombs have filmed a Youtube clip of this trip. The address is www.ausubaru.com then scroll down to Club Chat and click on Kilcoy to Nanango.

Imbil Island Reach Christmas Party Weekend 16 – 17 June 2013

The first to arrive at camp were Shane, Libby and their kids in their Nissan Patrol towing a camper trailer at lunch time on Friday. They were followed closely by Shane and Mary in their Forester, also towing a camper trailer. The weekend started for Yarney in his Forester, Dave Gibbo Forester, and DM Brumby on Friday afternoon. Their plan was to head up to Imbil, a more interesting way via Kenilworth, Charlie Moorlands and along the top of the range and down to Island Reach. There was thick traffic coming out of Brisbane, because of a few accidents on the Gateway. Once they all met up at the Bribie Island turn off, they started to make better time. On the dirt after Charlie Moorlands things started to get interesting, the creeks were low, but pretty rough due to all the flooding over the last few years. Higher in the hills with the recent storms the tracks started to get slippery in places, they made through without any problems and eventually made it to Imbil just on sun set. Joe and Cheryl Reeve driving Gibbo’s Turbo Liberty wagon, their Outback engine is in the process of being rebuilt by Gibbo, Shaun and son Simon Russell in their Forester, Cherie Verschuren and baby Lacey driving her Vitara and Luke in his Brumby also arrived on Friday night, along Cherie’s Mum Glenda in her nice new Forester. They hired a cabin because they had been camping for the week at Inskip Point. A few went to the pub for dinner, while the rest cooked dinner back at camp. The rest of the night was spent relaxing and chatting under Yarney’s shelter. A few more people arrived on Saturday, including Doug and Shan Tilley and their 2 kids in their 2.2 litre L Series, Rik and Lisa Close and family in their Outback 3.0 R towing a camper trailer, Ron and Glenys Penfold in their Prado and new pop top Olympic caravan and Luke’s friends Adam and Dave in a Jeep. A decent group got together on Saturday morning and decided to go for a drive through Amamoor Forestry. There were a few hairy hill climbs and the snatch strap was used a few times on Joe and Gibbo. Shane and Libby headed back after 3 hours but Dave, Luke, Shaun, Adam, Yarney and Joe kept exploring new tracks. They ended up driving till about 4pm. A swim in Yabba Creek at the campground was enjoyed by all the kids and some of the adults too! The kids loved swimming across to the little island area and jumping off the edge. Ron got his radio controlled speed boat out for a spin and also his radio controlled monster truck. Simon had a go controlling the speed boat, and everyone camping at Island Reach had a look. Dinner was awesome; huge pizzas from the Rattler Café and the winner of the big Christmas raffle was a happy Doug Tilley. A few people got into the Christmas spirit and decorated their tents/campers with lights. Even Kelsey, Luke and Cherie dog, got into the spirit with a glow stick around her collar. During evening there were storms about, luckily they all seemed to go around and miss us. Luke and Cherie’s family were camping at Inskip Point and unfortunately they copped some storm damage to their campers. Sunday morning was overcast and the forecast was for some afternoon storms. After a leisurely brekkie, some headed to the markets for a look in the centre of town. The plan for the day was to do a drive towards the Kenilworth area. Luke and Cherie headed back to Inskip Point to clean up and the Close family stayed back at camp.

December 2013

On a steep track near Imbil we had to clear a fallen tree to get through and further on, we got a little lost for a while in a recently cleared area, some of the tracks had changed. Once back on track we stopped at a rocky water hole for morning tea. With all the recent dry weather the water level was very low and no one went for a swim. After more steep climbing, where everyone had no problems, even Joe was getting hang of driving the Lib turbo. Around lunch time we eventually reached one of the main tracks that led back to Imbil. After lunch everybody started to pack up, except for Shane, Mary and the Taylors’, they were staying an extra day until Monday. Again Yarney, Gibbo and DM headed for home via the Kenilworth area to check out more tracks. On a steep loose climb, with dark storm clouds and thunder moving in, they decided to call it a day. The storm hit with heavy rain and strong winds, once they were on the main track out, near Charlie Moorlands. Later on Shane sent a text and photo from Imbil about the storm, they had no major damage. With looming storms and finally getting one on Sunday afternoon, it still was a great weekend to a top camping spot and area. Thanks to everyone coming and helping out. This report was done by Libby Taylor who did Friday and Saturday and David Martin who did Sunday. All photos supplied courtesy of Dave Gibson.
