What’s on your mind? Find out more about the BC tutors by Jeong Eun Na and Yoonkyo Hong

3. As a tutor

1. As a person A) I think I am: Sam : sociable. Neil : friendly, understanding, not perfect. Sohyoung : content. B) Others think I am: Sam: reserved. Neil: I don‟t know that I can answer that. Sohyoung: organised and sensible. Some students tell me I‟m a little scary too!

2. Life in Korea

A) My strong points are: Sam: my interest in the subject and my students. Neil: I‟m pretty good at personalization trying to make them relevant and get students to think from a personal point of view. Sohyoung: I like to be organised and know what I am doing in advance. B I need to work on: Sam: improving my knowledge of teacher training techniques. Neil: being faster, my brain works slowly and taking other people‟s criticism. Sohyoung: Not cramming my lessons with too much information as it can stress out the Students. B) I recommend that students:

A) I think Korean people are: Sam: friendly and show their emotions clearly. Neil: friendly, considerate, creative, artistic but perhaps more complicated than I thought. Sohyoung: passionate and dedicated. B) I often go to: Sam: Itaewon in Seoul… Neil: ramen shop in Hongdae and Craftworks pub in Seoul. Sohyoung: parks to walk my dog (e.g. Seoul Forest, World Cup stadium parks). C) What are the differences between the Koreans and the British? Sam: Koreans are more nationalistic, the British are more individualistic. Koreans can appear more open at first. The British are quite reserved. Both nationalities like to drink! Neil: Koreans don‟t like blowing their nose and seem helpful, for example, in the metro old ladies point out empty seats. Sohyoung: Privacy is very important to British people whilst Koreans are more open about their personal life. 3

Sam: Neil: My girl friend‟s family are Polish so I need to talk to them. You could find similar kinds of things to motivate you. You need something to give you a boost. Sohyoung: Enjoy English. If you don‟t, you won‟t be doing it for long.

4. Etc. A) I believe: Sam: in God, sometimes. Neil: sushi in Seoul is terrible. Sohyoung: God gave everyone a talent. B) Being happy feels like: Sam: the best feeling in the world… Neil: eating good sushi in Japan, cold glass of Czech beer, seeing my girl-friend when she opens her eyes in the morning. Sohyoung: going home to your family after a hard day‟s work.

Small talk with trainees by Yong Shin Park(Siney) and Gi Hyuk Hwang (Robin)

1. How old are you? Ages of the trainees are as follows:

2. How do you de-stress? Asked how they de-stressed the trainees said they: Watch TV, drink good coffee, hang out with friends, eat good food, read books. Some interesting answers were "enjoying English, studying hard". Siney goes skiing on weekends and Robin used to have a shower to de-stress.

3.What subjects do you like? The most popular subject was ' Extensive Reading‟ (50%). The reason may be that ER has no exams, and the books are interesting and easy to read. Trainees also liked „Language Skills Focus‟ (25%). Other popular subjects include 'Reading', 'Writing', 'Speaking', ' Screen English' and 'Current Issues'.

4. What do you want to do at Christmas? Asked what they wanted to do at Christmas, the trainees said they wanted to go travelling with their family, have dinner with friends or family, get presents, take a rest and find a boy or girl friend. Robin is going to church with his family and watch his daughter's play. Siney may be skiing?

5. What do you want to accomplish in the New Year? The responses were to enter graduate school, become rich, do exercise, go abroad, take care of health, keeping reading English story books, move house and to speak English well. Several teachers want to marry, including Siney. So If you know a good woman call Siney. May all your wishes come true!

Do you want to be a good English Teacher? by Hyun-Seok Seo (Annie) and Deuk Ye Lee (Anna)

What is the Methodology course? What do you know about the IETTP Methodology course? Before I took part in the IETTP, I had no idea. This course is divided into two sections. First section focus on the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) we have to take during the IETTP. The purpose of the TKT is to check candidates‟ knowledge and concepts related to language, background of language teaching and learning. The other section focuses on Microteaching. This part covers practical teaching experience. Trainees need to micro-teach three times on the course. Each person teaches a part of a whole lesson. Afterwards, we get feedback-scores and comments from tutors and classmates.

Participants’ reflections One teacher on this course thought that it was the hardest part of the IETTP. She said that every week she needed to prepare for this lesson and every unit was full of difficult teaching terminology but had a lot of fantastic activities. Another teacher mentioned that she had to take the TKT test and do microteaching in the same week. She said that it was very tough for her because studying for the test and teaching practice overlapped. She added that whenever she takes part in microteaching, whether she is an observer or a teacher, she could get realistic knowledge and skills to help her teach English. All trainees agree that it is very useful and informative. “We will never forget the bitter sweet experiences on the Methodology course!”

We do many interesting activities during the class, for example, talking about the book to a partner, dictation, guessing what happens next, improvisations, writing a HAIKU, making a poster and playing games. We found out what the 30 trainees and the two tutors thought about the course.

Award 1: Most Popular Book The most popular book is "Anne of Green Gables". The other favorites are "The Witches", "White Fang", "Dead Man's Island", "Don't Look Now", "Phantom of the of Opera".

Award 2: Most Popular Character People's favorite character is "Anne" because Anne has a bright and positive attitude to life and she is so romantic and dreamy. Other popular characters include "Jane Eyre" and "Carol" in "Dead Man's Island". People like these women because they are brave and adventurous.

Welcome the new year with the sunrise ●

The first place the sun comes up in 2011 will be Ganjeolgot, located in Ulsan. To celebrate the coming of 2011, Ulsan is preparing a festival titled „The sun touches Ganjeolgot.‟ Visitors will be able to participate in the new year countdown, watch a laser show, fireworks and concerts, and enjoy many other entertainment. ● Jeongdongjin Jeongdongjin in Gangwon province is one of korea‟s most famous tourist sites for watching the sunrise. The small train station of Jeongdongjin is the closest from the beach and it is always full of tourists wishing and praying for the new year. ● Mt. Acha and Dobong Mt. Acha located near Children‟s Grand Park in Neungdong is a good place to watch the sunrise at high altitudes. If you want to take a picture and find the perfect spot, you will need to hurry, as it will be crowded with visitors. Compared to Mt. Acha, Mt Dobong located in Northern Seoul is quieter. You will be able to enjoy the coming of 2011 peacefully.

Welcome the new year with festivals ● Dream forest The Dream Forest north of Seoul which has become a new tourist attraction in the city, is offering exciting events to enjoy on New Year‟s day. You can pray for your new year‟s wishes on the observation platform which gives you views of the whole city. SeoRak Mountain in Winter by Miran Kim, Hun Namgung, Eunjung Seo Wow~Winter is coming! A lot of people are thinking about good places to go during Christmas and the New Year. Is it boring spending a day off in the city? How about escaping the routine? Here are some good tips for your holiday. You can enjoy ski resorts, spas, delicious foods and fresh air at Seorak Mountain.

Hiking and skiing SeoRak Mountain is the most beautiful place especially in winter. It is particularly worth a visit to see the mountains covered in powder snow. You can fall in love with splendid valleys and beautiful waterfalls. When you go hiking in winter, it is best to use the gentle trail instead of the steep cliff walk for safety. To enjoy winter hiking you should protect yourself from the cold and the wind by wearing a water-proof jacket, thermals, gloves and hiking shoes. There are also great ski resorts where you can enjoy winter sports at SeoRak Mountain. Vybaldi Park is not far from Seoul and there are a lot of places to stay around the resort. Yongpyung resort, although a little far from Seoul, is famous for its long and challenging slopes.

Hot springs How about going to the hot springs to relax? There are many famous hot springs and even outdoor hot springs in SeoRak. Hanwha Waterpia in Hanwha Condo is kind of an amusement park equipped with swimming pools for children and hot springs for adults. Families can enjoy swimming in the various theme pools. ChocksanSpa is famous for its water which is good for health and skin. Also Five Colors Spa is a cold spa which changes color through carbonation. The water is good for health and can help you to get into shape.

Food There are some famous foods you have to eat when you visit SeoRak. Tofu and a meal with pollack are representative food of Gangwon province. You can drink tea in Baekdam temple while hiking. You can enjoy fresh raw fish near Daepo harbor in Sokcho.

Accommodation

How to get there

There are many places to stay with great facilities to make visitors feel comfortable. You can book in advance and utilize the variety of services that are available. Hawha Condo is a good place to stay because it has reasonable prices and convenient transport system including a shuttle bus system. You can stay in bungalows if you want to enjoy your holiday in natural surroundings far away from the busy city. Also, there is a mountain retreat called Sanjang on top of SeoRak. You can stay and see the sunrise at the peak of SeoRak. It is cheap so you can't get any food or blankets and it's very popular so you need to book at least 1 month in advance.

Seoul to SeoRak mountain takes 3~4 hours by bus or car. But I recommend taking the bus on weekends or in the peak ski season because the traffic is bumper to bumper. A new railway from Seoul to Hiwon ski resort has opened recently. But if you are planning to take skiing gear or food I personally recommend taking the car. Another way to SeoRak Mountain is using a shuttle bus. Most of the resorts provide shuttle buses from Kang-nam, Jamsil and Jong-ro to SeoRak Mountain. So you should check the resort web-sites to get information about bus times.

So don‟t stay inside, have fun and take back great memories from SeoRak Mountain.

Book Review by Yeon Kyung Yu and Jin Hee Yang The Magic Finger Roald Dahl (1916–1990) is one of the most beloved storytellers of all time. He wrote many award -winning books for children, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda. I am excited to introduce another one of his amazing books, The Magic Finger.

“Oh, that Magic Finger!" I cried. "What has it done to my friends?" To the Gregg family, hunting is just plain fun. To the girl who lives next door, it‟s just plain terrible. She tries to be polite. She tries to talk them out of it, but the Greggs go too far. When she‟s very angry, the little girl‟s magic finger takes over. She really can‟t control it, and now the Greggs are living in a nest, and that‟s just the beginning of their problems. The story is very imaginative and enjoyably bizarre. I couldn’t predict the ending at all and I couldn’t put it down. It also contains important messages to love and to have empathy for all creatures. I would recommend this as a book for those who want a quick entertaining read. Learn more about Roald Dahl on the official web site: www. roalddahl.com

The Alchemist Paulo Coelho is one of the most influential and best selling author in the world. The Alchemist, The Pilgrimage, Veronika Decides to Die and others have sold more that 65million copies in 150 countries and have been translated into 60 languages. I am really happy to introduce his representative book, The Alchemist. “When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” Santiago is an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian Pyramids. One day he meets an old king and trades one-tenth of his sheep to find the way to a hidden treasure. As soon as he arrives in Africa, all his money is stolen. He has to work in a crystal shop for an entire year in order to go home. But, when he gains enough money, he has to decide whether he will go home or go find the treasure. Is it possible to change things into gold? An alchemist is a mysterious and wise person who makes it possible. The title may look a little boring. but this little volume led me to have magical adventures and I was really on the edge of my seat to the end. Visit the author online at www.paulocoelho.com 14
