MANTRA: “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi Indian political and spiritual leader (1869 - 1948) Course Overview: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop knowledge of world literature through integrated educational experiences in the language arts strands. Emphasis will be on representative literature of various cultures and world literary movements from ancient times to the present, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama chosen on the basis of relationships to contemporary cultural, social, and literary ideas and concerns. As 10th grade students, you should begin to focus your thoughts on the path you want to chart for yourself after graduation. Through the lens of World Literature, we will focus on building your capacity as college and career ready scholars. In order to be successful in this class, you will need to understand and master the texts that we explore through thoughtful reading and critical analysis. Also, it is important that you develop your authentic voice as writers so you can effectively communicate your ideas and opinions in a compelling way. Over the next 10 months, you will read voraciously, write prolifically, converse respectfully, and think analytically. This course will address benchmarks for the Sunshine State Standards, and you may access those standards at: http://www.fldoe.org/bii/Curriculum/Course_Descriptions/basic.asp. This course is mandatory to fulfill graduation requirements. I wish you all the best as we embark on this journey through World Literature. CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES *Class participation and attendance is worth 15% of your grade. Please read carefully the policies and procedures to ensure that you do not lose any credit. Classroom Rules In order to ensure that productive and efficient class instruction takes place it is important that the following policies and procedures are adhered to: 1. All school policies and rules printed in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Code of Conduct and will be enforced in the classroom. 2. Adhere to all procedures and directions given for assignments 3. Listen and contribute to classroom discussions with an open mind and respect to all ideas expressed by others 4. Arrive to class on time. Be seated at your desk AND working on the BELL RINGER by the ringing of the bell or considered TARDY. EARLY is on time and on time is LATE! 5. Turn Off or Silent ALL electronic devices and have them OUT OF SIGHT, if you select to use a tablet for your novels or selected readings in class it must be approved by the instructor prior to use. 6. All materials must be brought daily – textbook or YOUR OWN COPY OF THE NOVEL, binder, composition book, blue/black ink pen, pencil and highlighters. 7. Ensure ALL assignments are neat and completed to expectations given. 8. No food or drink allowed in class. 9. Passes to leave class will be written only for emergencies. If you need to use the restroom, please do so before class. Consequences Students who fail to comply with the preceding guidelines will receive the following consequences and points reduced in their participation grade for each action taken: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Tardiness to class will result in a 1 point decrease in participation Unexcused Absence from class will result in a 2 point decrease in participation Failure to complete 2 assignments will result in a grade letter drop in participation Inappropriate classroom behavior will result in the following actions being taken:

Consequence 1. Verbal Warning (talking during instruction, eating in class) 2. Phone Call Home/Request for Parent Conference (lateness, failure to complete assignments, using profane language) 3. Detention (repeat offenses, class disruption) 4. Administrative Written Referral (walking out of class, fighting)

ACADEMIC POLICY

Students are expected to complete ALL ASSIGNMENTS. Grades will be based on the total points received out of total possible 600 points, weighted by category. Grading scales and categories may change at the discretion of the instructor. ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK • All work must be made up in a timely manner with an excused absence note. Failure to do so will result in a grade of “Z” for the assignment(s). A “Z” is the equivalent to zero points for the assignment. • Any unexcused makeup work will be penalized by one letter grade. • It is the student’s responsibility to copy the assignment board for his/her class, complete the assignment(s), and turn them in. Credit will be given for make-up work according to published school policy. • Students must also arrange a time to make up any excused missed tests and quizzes within 3 days after returning to school except in cases of extended absence. Make-ups must be scheduled with the instructor in advance. It is not the instructor’s responsibility to remind individuals what they need to make up. Students may meet with the instructor before school or stay after school to make up missed tests and/or quizzes as long as they have made an appointment. ALL MAKE-UP WORK MUST BE COMPLETED TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE END OF THE SEMESTER. LATE WORK • Homework and daily assignments are due upon request as assigned; they will NOT be accepted late for full credit. Late or incomplete assignments will be given a grade of “Z”. No exceptions • Late penalties of 10 points per day will apply to papers and other major assignments. Therefore, if you turn in a major assignment one day late then the highest grade you can receive is a “B” before it has been graded. You are only allowed ONE late assignment per grading period. Please be mindful of deadlines. PLAGIARISM STATEMENT Plagiarism is the use of another’s words or ideas and the presentation of them as though they were entirely one’s own. Acts of plagiarism might include, but are not limited to: • using words or ideas from a published source without proper documentation • using the work of another student (e.g. copying homework, composition, or project) • using excessive editing suggestions of another student, teacher, parent, or paid editor. Plagiarism on any project or paper will result in a “Z” or zero for the assignment and an Honor Code Violation. Unless strictly stipulated by the teacher, collaboration on written work is not acceptable.
