Lesson Plan Grade Level: 9-12 Hanover Park Regional High School

Overview Typography is used as a main visual element in a design and may be connected to math, language arts, and word languages. This project requires the students to design a typographic poster that helps raise awareness about the harmful effects of school violence. The design can consist of words, statements, or a paragraph with facts/stats from the internet. Images may be included, but type should be the dominant image in your design - experiment with word sizes, positions, color and placement.

Lesson Objectives

To develop typographic creativity and increase students' proficiency in the course software. In addition, the lesson is designed to focus on the pillars of character, "caring" and "respect," while combating bullying.

Materials Needed • Computer (Mac or PC) • Adobe Illustrator software program (however, this project •

may be done with colored pencils on paper if computer access is not available) Project handout

Recite various bullying statistics. Ask students how they feel about bullying, if they've ever been a victim of bullying or seen an act of bulling take place. Introduce the project via handout, inform of the objectives. Utilize the web to research. Ask students to reflect on their posters and its impact on the school.

Assessment

Teachers should review the final products produced by the students and evaluate them on their use of typographic design and addressing the issues of bullying. Creating a evaluative rubric with the students before the project is assigned is recommended.

Extensions and Adaptations • • • •

Provide finished examples for students who are having trouble understanding the project. Project could be completed on paper with crayons or colored pencils. Cycle the classroom as students are working and assist as needed. Students who finish early can do an additional design for extra credit.

School Violence Awareness

Typographic Poster Design Objective(s): Develop typographic creativity; Increase proficiency in course software; Help raise awareness and combat bullying

Typography can be used as a main visual element in a design. For this project you need to design a typographic poster that helps raise awareness about the harmful effects of school violence (with the overarching theme being that “HP Students Care About Each Other”). Your design can consist of words, a statement, or even a paragraph. You may obtain facts and/or statistics from the internet. You may include an image from the internet, but type should be the dominant image in your design – experiment with word sizes, positions, color and placement.

1. Create a new Adobe Illustrator document 8.5 x 11 (vertical).

2. Click once on the page with the rectangle tool and create a box 8” x 8”. Position the box so it is aligned with the top and sides of your page (be sure to leave a ¼ inch margin) Lock it, and complete your design in this box.

3. Work up to due date – if you finish one design, think of ways to make it better, or begin a new design idea.

Project grade will be based on: • • • • • •

Is typography is the main design element? Design is original (not a copy of something on the web) Utilization of the elements & principles of design Creative process (use of class time/development and implementation of ideas) Communication and quality of final design Requirements met/instructions followed

(Note, projects will be hung up around the school building to help raise awareness about school violence)
