Mission Statement St. Nathy’s College was established to act as a Centre of Learning. We strive to achieve this within a fostered Christian environment which equally provides for the faith and personal development of each student. All of our school endeavours and activities are directed towards these objectives

Programmes and Levels Typewriting is offered as a choice subject to junior students. Students who study this subject for three years will take the Junior Certificate Typewriting exam. This exam can be taken at Higher or Ordinary level depending on the ability of the student.

Subject Aims    

To enable students to operate the keyboard by touch, using the correct technique. To develop in students the ability to understand written instructions. To increase students’ ability to integrate related learning in production typewriting. To enable students to demonstrate keyboarding skills with confidence.

Subject Objectives    



Students will learn correct posture at the keyboard. Students will learn to operate all aspects of the keyboard. Students will develop competence in straight copy typing. Students will develop proof reading abilities, detect errors and acquire a critical attitude towards spelling, punctuation and syntax, as well as learning correction symbols. Students will be able to arrange material attractively.

Option Structure Option in First year. Option in Second year, leading to Third year and JC Examination.

Grouping of Pupils (Mixed ability, Streaming): Mixed ability grouping. This system works well as each student progresses according to his/her ability, and each JC student chooses their level according to ability also.

Student Access to Subject/Level Students opt for typing at registration and attend classes for their first year. During their second and third years students study the subject to higher level, and then decide on the appropriate level at which to sit the subject at Junior Cert.

Class Organisation Roll attendance is noted in each class. Inability to take part in the class because of injuries outside class is also noted. Each student sits at a typewriter facing the teachers desk. Students occasionally have access to the computer room facilities where each student has the use of a terminal.

Course Materials Each student is required to have a folder & copy for the subject which is retained in the classroom. Additional material provided by the teacher

Provision for Students with Special Needs Students with sight or hearing problems are assigned suitable seating/location in the classroom. In certain cases, typing notes can be enlarged & can be printed in colour to assist the student. Each student completes tasks at his/her own speed, and this accommodates students with learning difficulties. Consultation occurs from time to time with resource teacher. Non-English speaking students find the subject helpful in expanding their learning or English. Classroom is wheelchair accessible.

Cross-Curricular Planning No formal planning, but the subject has a lot in common with;  English – spelling, punctuation, letter writing/layouts  IT – presentation of work, keyboard skills & accuracy  Maths – calculating percentages, margins & tables using certain pitch sizes We also have casual consultation between teachers as issues occur.

Literacy and Numeracy Literacy and numeracy are promoted in the following ways: Literacy  Print rich classroom  14 week spellings module  Focus on spellings, punctuation, grammar  Proofreading work completed Numeracy  Dating work at the beginning of each lesson  Calculate/clarify percentage marks on progress tests/house exams.

Subject Planning for a Culturally Diverse Society The syllabus is based on commercial issues and may be said to be culturally neutral. The subject does afford a limited scope to accommodate culture diversity.

Effective Teaching Methodologies Methodologies include;  Finger exercise drills  Keyboard skills  Accuracy building drills  Speed building drills  Document layout options  Proofreading  Peer work  Repetition and practice of the above in order to reinforce the learning process

Provision for Health and Safety Requirements The Health and Safety policy of the school applies to the typing room. All typewriters have a power on/off switch as does the electric sockets. Safety plugs have been purchased and are placed in the electric sockets when they are not in use. Students are taught correct posture and techniques, lapses in correct posture etc are noted and corrected.

Homework Procedures While official homework is rarely given (except for year 1 spellings module) students are encouraged to improve their skill by logging onto various Free Typing tutorials available on the internet (if accessible).  Spellings tests are signed on a regular basis by the student’s parent/guardian.  Class work is recorded in the student’s journal.

Assessment Assessment of Learning  Progress tests are given regularly.  Feedback is given to individual students & errors are explained.  Formal tests are completed at Halloween, Christmas, Easter & Summer.  This feedback is communicated to parents by means of an end of term report.

Assessment for Learning  Learning objectives are displayed & explained at the beginning of each lesson.  Peer & self assessment is used throughout each lesson.  The teacher observes learning & gives descriptive feedback to class as a group & individual students during the lessons.  Students use a specific page in their journal to track progress of their learning throughout the year.

Record Keeping Procedures  

Teachers record all examination results in their own teacher journals. Christmas and Summer reports are recorded on the school computer system. They are then printed and forwarded to parents/guardians.

Reporting Procedures  

The school diary is used as a means of communication between teachers and parents/guardians. Parent teacher meetings are held regularly – where parents are given a full report on the students progress.
