IN EVERY ISSUE: Students from St. Francis Junior High and Catholic Central High relax for a moment or two before writing the B1 Level DELF Exam at the University of Lethbridge on April 12, 2011. The individual oral exams took place on April 16th.

On Tuesday, April 12th and Wednesday, April 13th twenty-four students in Grades 5 to 10 from St. Michael School, St. Francis Junior High and Catholic Central High School took the DELF Diploma Exam at the University of Lethbridge. The DELF, or Diplôme d’études en langue française, is a French Proficiency Credential administered by the French Government. The exam focuses on the four categories of communication: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Students choose the level at which they wish to test their proficiency: from A1, which is the Beginner Level, to B2, which reflects the level of an Independent User.

When Holy Spirit French students learned about this language opportunity, many jumped at the occasion. CorrectorExaminers John Girard and Wendy Urquhart held a DELF course in Pincher Creek and Lethbridge respectively to help students prepare for the exam. We are thrilled to report that all candidates were successful! Students will receive their official diplomas from France in the summer months. The DELF Diploma is an internationally recognized credential and an impressive addition to any job portfolio. The success of our students is a tribute to their hard work and the quality of French Language Education in our School Division. (Continued - page 2)

LA RECETTE DU MOIS : LA TARTE AU CITRON (LEMON TART) Ingredients 3/4 cup granulated sugar (175 mL) 3/4 cup lemon juice , strained (175 mL) 4 egg yolks 2 eggs (whites and yolks) 1/2 tsp grated lemon rind 1/4 tsp salt 3 tbsp unsalted butter (45 mL) Pâte Sablé (Pie Crust) 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour (375 mL) 1/4 cup icing sugar (50 mL) 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cube (125 mL) 2 egg yolks

UNE CABANE À SUCRE À PINCHER CREEK ! Du jambon à l’érable, des fêves au lard, du pouding chômeur et de la tire d’érable : OUI ! On avait le bec sucré à la Cabane à sucre de St. Michael’s !

The Elementary students of St. Michael’s and Monsieur Girard’s Grade 7 and 8 French Immersion class enjoyed this year’s Cabane à sucre. On Friday, March 18th, the air at St. Michael’s was so thick with the scent of Maple syrup that you could have spread it on bread. Madame Danielle Jaworowski, Madame Joanne Mack and Monsieur John Girard were busily preparing traditional French-Canadian fare as students filled the Mall to enjoy this warm lunch. The pouding chômeur and tire d’érable were without a doubt the foods of choice for the kids!

Un grand merci goes out to Madame Danielle

who presented this idea and got the ball rolling; to Madame Mack for her culinary skills and superbe French; and last but certainly not least, to the St. Michael’s Parent Council, without whom this great event would not have been possible. Bravo ! Wendy Urquhart

CONCOURS D’ART ORATOIRE À L’ÉCOLE ST. MARY On Friday, November 5th, Madame Yearous’ Grade six class had a French Immersion Speech Contest. The entire class had prepared speeches on topics of their choice. Madame Yearous, Madame Boras and Madame Urquhart judged the students on their pronunciation, eye contact, intonation, the content of their speech and their use of the French language. The students were very well prepared and this made the task of judging extremely difficult. In the end, les gagnants were Christian Thériault, Blake Miller and Delaney Wikenheiser. Each student received a framed photograph of the Eiffel Tower taken by Madame Urquhart. Un grand merci to Madame Yearous for planning this French Speech Contest. À l’année prochaine !

NEW FRENCH LIBRARY AND CULTURAL CENTRE By now, everyone has seen the construction going on over at l’École La Vérendrye, the local Francophone school on Mayor Magrath and 6th Avenue South. However, most are unaware that what you can see from 6th Avenue South is actually a French Cultural Centre called La Cité des Prairies, which is open to the public and offers a number of French services. Of all the services offered, my family’s personal favourite is the Médi@thèque francophone Emma Morrier located on the second floor. Known already to many simply as the Médi@thèque, this is the only independently housed collection of French resources in Alberta. Most people are surprised to learn that there are more than 15 sizeable French collections across the province. As a family, we love to read in French and watch French films. If you have a Chinook Arch Library card (and chances are you do if you frequent any public library in the region) then you can take out books and DVDs. If you do not, any child under the age of 16 years can obtain a card free of charge. It is wonderful to be able to practice your French in a public place! The staff are friendly, bilingual and very helpful. The Médi@thèque is named after Saskatchewan born playwright and artist Emma Morrier who, while living in

Edmonton in 1935, wrote the first play to be presented en français at the Alberta Regional Drama Festival. The judges were so impressed that they sent Morrier to Ottawa to present her play « Bon Sang Ne Ment Pas » in the Dominion Drama Festival. Thanks to this new library, students in Immersion and French as a Second Language can practice their French in a real-life setting! Please visit La Cité des Prairies to see what they have to offer!

ÉCOLE ST. MARY’S HAS BEEN HONOURED BY THE FRANCOPHONE COMMUNITY

The Association canadienne-française de l’Alberta created three quilts to represent French history in our community. This quilt, which includes one of our French Immersion schools, l’École St. Mary, honours the organizations that support French in Lethbridge. Each of the twelve Francophone communities made at least one quilt to recognize the French history of their town or city. The Lethbridge French Cultural Centre, which has been named La Cité des Prairies held its Grand Opening on March 11th. Minister Hector Goudreau, Hon. Greg Weadick, Hon. Rick Casson, and former Mayor Bob Tarleck came to celebrate the fruits of a project that began well over a decade ago.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH RECOGNIZES IMMERSION GRADUATES On Tuesday, May 3rd, Catholic Central High School held its first ever French Immersion Graduate Celebration. Students and their parents enjoyed a lovely meal, memorable speeches and received a “Holy Spirit French Immersion” pin to wear on their graduation gown at convocation. “It is nice to recognize students who have spent twelve or thirteen years studying in French,” commented Monsieur Perron, Catholic Central High School’s French Immersion and French as a Second Language teacher. Monsieur Perron planned this event to honour the efforts of his French Immersion students and was also the Master of Ceremonies of the evening. The School Division also recognized Immersion graduates with a new French Immersion Certificate at the Convocation Ceremony held on May 7th.

Un très grand merci to Gilbert Perron for planning the

event, to London Road for providing a delicious meal, and to Tracey Evers for taking photographs of the evening.
