Course Description Human Anatomy and Physiology I is a study of the cells, tissues, and organ systems of the human body. Emphasis is on understanding the physiologic mechanisms maintaining homeostasis. The dynamics of cell membranes as well as the components and functions of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine systems will be studied. Laboratory activities are designed to complement lecture topics.
2. Prerequisites None 3. Course Goals The following are the student learning outcomes:
Name the 6 different levels of structural organization that make up the human body (from smallest to largest). List the 11 organ systems. Identify components of each, as well as the major function. List the 4 different tissue types and be able to describe and differentiate between them. Explain how negative feedback mechanisms are involved in maintaining homeostasis. Identify and describe cellular organelles and the composition of the plasma membrane. Define and give examples of membrane transport processes. Define and describe the acute inflammatory response. Describe the structure and function of the skin. Describe the structure and function of bone. Identify the bones in the appendicular and axial skeletons. Describe and explain the physiology and differences between resting membrane potential, action potential, and local potential in reference to neurons. Describe the events that occur at the neuromuscular junction and how these events contribute to skeletal muscle contraction. Identify select muscles of the arm, leg, face and torso. Describe the actions these muscles produce. Describe and explain the autonomic nervous system in terms of its anatomy, physiology, and neurotransmitters. Describe the location and function of the various endocrine glands found in the body. List the major hormones that each gland produces and the effects of the hormone on the target tissues.
4. Textbook Required: Human Anatomy & Physiology, 8th Ed., 2010, by Elaine Marieb. You will need it for both lecture and lab for both A&P 1 & 2. Study Guides for each test will be provided as handouts. These will cover the most important topics but not all of the required information. Optional & Recommended: Encyclopedia & Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health, 7th Ed., by Miller-Keane. This is a useful source for terminology definitions as well as for the causes, signs & symptoms, and treatments of many diseases and disorders. Web Resources: Lecture material outlines can be found by accessing home page BC college, under current students, faculty then Kerry Walling In addition you will need … 3 Ring-notebook at least 2-3inches, lots of notebook paper, flash cards, colored pencils (helpful).
5. Lab Requirements The required textbook for the course will be used in the laboratory. You will receive a handout at the beginning of each laboratory to be used as a study guide along with instructor notes and other activities to provide an opportunity to learn the anatomy and basic function related to various organ systems. You will be Quizzed over material from the previous days lab. There will be 12 quizzes or assignments –your final lab grade will incorporate only the top 10 grades. Quizzes or assignments will be given the 1st 25 minutes of the class day assigned to them and students who are late to class will have less time to take the quiz—oral quiz questions will not be repeated for students who are late.

8. Attendance and Withdrawal Policies The Brazosport College Life Sciences Department believes attendance in both lecture and lab is critical for the comprehension of material. I will take attendance in Lecture. The student is responsible for officially withdrawing from the course. To officially withdraw from the course, students must complete and sign a withdrawal form, available in the Registrar’s Office.
9. Course Requirements and Grading Policy Some topics are best addressed in a lecture setting while others are more suited for lab. In general, the emphasis in lecture is on physiology while the emphasis in lab is on anatomy. But, the two are not completely separable. My lectures are in Power Point format and are on the college website if you choose to print them out. They are not all inclusive and I will not cover all of the material in lecture. You are strongly encouraged to take notes. You must read and study the textbook. There are 5 lecture exams and 12 lab quizzes and assignments. In general, lecture exams test your knowledge of the topics covered in lecture while lab quizzes test your knowledge of topics covered in lab. Grades for the course are based 60% on lecture and 40% on lab quizzes. You must take lab quizzes and lecture exams during your scheduled lab and lecture time. 10. Exams-You will be given 5 exams in this class, one a week. Each exam will be comprehensive ~ each exam will contain material from the previous exam as well as information gleamed from laboratory activities. The final exam is required, it will not harm your grade and will be used to replace a lower test score.
11. Additional assignments: In addition to exams you will be given review sheets, flashcards, and other On Your Own work assignments to complete. Those that are taken for grade will go either to your class (60%) or your lab (40%) which ever is more relevant. This class is a fast paced class and so a great deal of learning needs to take place in a short period of time. You as a student are going to have to take responsibility for your learning and use a great deal of out of class time to help you learn this material.
12. Make-up policy There are no make-up exams or lab quizzes. If you miss an exam you must contact the instructor within 24 hours or drop the course. 13. Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to fully participate in the course. The following criteria are intended to assist you in being successful in this course. A. Communicate with your instructor *above all else B. Complete course work on time *no late assignments accepted C. Come to class on time *its rude and disrupts the flow of class. Plan for the train. *** D. NO CELL PHONES IN CLASS-use only when instructor gives a class break. E. Understand the Syllabus Requirements F.
