CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

From Sediments to Behaviour and Palaeoenvironments: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Hunter-Gatherer Contexts during the Late Glacial-Early Holocene (Session#591) Ana Polo-Díaz (IPHES - Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social) Vera Aldeias (ICArEHB, Universidade do Algarve - Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) Natàlia Égüez (Archaeological Micromorphology and Biomarkers -AMBI Lab, Universidad de La Laguna)

The objective of this session is to bring together interdisciplinary

research on hunter-gatherer contexts from Europe and beyond with a focus on: ● Late Glacial-Early Holocene deposits (c.15,000-8,000 cal BP). ● Modern hunter-gatherer sites. We welcome contributions using geoarchaeology, bioarchaeology, ethnoarchaeology, experimentation and any other relevant methodological approach for the study of sediments and related features (e.g. charcoal, seeds, pollen, phytoliths, shells, microfauna) to shed light on the following aspects: ● Human behaviour (e.g. combustion residues; occupation surfaces; midden deposits). ● Climatic shifts and palaeoenvironmental fluctuations at local or regional scale (e.g.14-12,9 kyr Interstadial; 12,9-11,6 kyr Younger Dryas; 8,2 kyr cold event; Late Glacial and Early Holocene sedimentary and soil dynamics). ● Formation, taphonomy and integrity of deposits. Our goal is to encourage discussion on the use of space, settlement patterns, natural resource exploitation and how climatic shifts may have shaped cultural responses of last hunter-gatherers. In parallel, we aim to discuss how integration of multi-proxy data can improve our understanding of the formation histories of sites and related cultural and natural processes.
