Modeling Activities: The students will work in groups to complete the story map. With assistance from instructor, the students will complete the map and share with the class.

Anticipatory Guide The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf Third Grade Intermediate-Advanced Language Proficiency Introduction: The instructor will ask the students if they have ever felt different than other people. Then the instructor will ask the students how/when they have felt different. The instructor will ask the students if any of them have ever felt different because of language. The instructor will tell the students that the book for today is about a bull that doesn’t feel or behave like all of the other bulls in the pasture. Modeling Activities: The students will work in groups to complete the pre-reading portion of the anticipatory guide. With assistance from instructor, the students will complete the pre-reading portion and share with the class. Instruction: The instructor will read the story to the students. At many points, Ferdinand smells the flowers. It is important for the instructor to read slowly and take a deep breath when Ferdinand smells the flowers. It helps to engage the students. The action also serves as a nonverbal cues. As the instructor reads, the instructor will ask the students to summarize portions of the story verbally in groups to aid in comprehension. Additionally, during the reading the students will answer the following questions: 1. What does Ferdinand like to do all day 2. What do all of the other bulls do all day? 3. Who wants Ferdinand to go run and play like other bulls? 4. Why does Ferdinand get chosen to go to the bullfight? 5. Did Ferdinand want to be chosen to go to the bullfight
The instructor will pause occasionally to allow students to answer these questions and write them on the anticipatory guide. After the instructor reads the story, the students will complete the post-reading portion of the anticipatory guide. The students will share their completed responses in groups.
