Media Information Located in the hub of northeastern New York’s North Country, a population center of 119,000 that includes Clinton and Essex counties, Plattsburgh State athletics receives extensive media coverage from a variety of print and electronic outlets--more than the average NCAA Division III program. On radio, Plattsburgh’s entire men’s hockey season can be heard over the airwaves on 1340AM WIRY Hometown Radio, with veteran play-by-play broadcaster Ducky Drake calling the action for the 36th consecutive campaign and Rob Knowles providing color analysis. Select women’s hockey contests are also carried by the station, which webcasts at www.wiry.com (then click the “listen” button on the jukebox). Plattsburgh State Television (PSTV), the student-operated station, broadcasts hockey and basketball games to a regional audience on a tape-delayed basis. 2009 Season Outlook The 2009 Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team is looking to build on last year’s breakthrough State University of New York Athletic Conference campaign in which the Cardinals finished with a winning conference record (4-3; three-way tie for third place) for the first time in the program’s history. That next step would be advancing to the SUNYAC tournament for the first time--an experience the Cardinals have been denied the last two years based on tie-breakers. “We hope to avenge this short-coming and gain a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament with a shot at the conference title,” said Plattsburgh coach P.J. Kavanagh, who owns a 17-14 school record after two seasons at the helm. Plattsburgh’s strengths are offensive weapons and strong leadership among the 22 returnees--including seven starters-off last year’s 8-8 squad. “We have 11 seniors that we expect to make a positive impact on the team. This includes our five captains who will provide strong leadership in all areas of the field,” Kavanagh said. The offense is led by junior attacker Luke Weidlein, who became the first 30-30 man in the program’s 11-year history with 32 goals and 30 assists in 2008. He’s also the fastest Cardinal to score 100 career points, reaching the milestone in just two seasons. “Luke is the quarterback of our offense” and one of the most dynamic scorers both nationally and in SUNYAC,” stated Kavanagh. “Inside Lacrosse magazine picked him for its Preseason All-SUNYAC first team.” Senior attackman and captain Tom Cerny is a deft playmaker who set a school record with 40 assists last season and added a career-high 19 goals. Kyle Norchi is a redshirt sophomore who did not play in 2008 due to injury, but posted the most prolific season ever for a Cardinal freshman in 2007. Norchi scored a then-school record with 61 points on 38 goals and 23 assists, which still stands as the best mark for a Plattsburgh freshman. Senior captain Matt Maes is coming off an All-SUNYAC campaign, controlling the midfield. He had career highs of 15 goals, nine assists, 24 points and 36 ground balls last year. “Matt has the ability to dominate the midfield with his hard work and natural athleticism,” Kavanagh said. “He’s one of our top scoring middies.” Junior midfielder Ryan Price is another key returner who shined in his first full season as the Cardinals’ face-off man in 2008. He won 54.1 percent of his 366 draws, which was third in the SUNYAC and 55th in NCAA Division III. He also set a school record with 99 ground balls, ranking 23rd in the nation with 6.19 per game. “Ryan has the potential to be a very big impact at the faceoff ‘X’,” Kavanagh stated. Goaltending duties fall on returning senior Matt Billia who recorded a 3-2 mark, 11.53 goals-against average and .603 save percentage in a reserve role last season. “Matt will be our starter this season,” Kavanagh said, “and he brings a great deal of experience” to the position. The third-year coach cites as one of the team’s weaknesses juggling an up-tempo offense while stopping the opponent’s attack. “Our biggest challenge will be to maintain our offensive out-

put and up-tempo style of play while limiting opposing teams with our defense,” he said. “Getting scoring from our second midfield line will also be a challenge.” More than anything else, Kavanagh stresses that the team will continue to play its style. “We encourage our guys to play fast and to have fun, and we will continue to recruit players with the athletic ability and the lacrosse talent to make this a reality,” he said. “I am patient enough to allow the players to make the decisions, and the mistakes, necessary to do it.” Kavanagh is excited to see his 2009 recruiting class mesh with the veterans, including junior college transfers J.T. Prior and Luke Prochilo, both of whom played at Nassau Community College. He believes a lot of new faces will make an immediate impact in their first season wearing a red and white uniform. “J.T. is an excellent defenseman who has the potential to start immediately,” Kavanagh said. “He is a strong, physical player with excellent stick skills and leadership qualities. “Luke is an athletic, two-way midfielder who is projected to be on our second line.” In addition, Patrick Wright of Huntington High School could be a high-impact freshman at attack. “He has good size with excellent stick skills and is a great finisher inside,” the coach said. “He could be a contributor during man-up situations.” Kavanagh says the SUNYAC race will be every one chasing perennial NCAA Division III powers Cortland and Geneseo--schools ranked in the national preseason poll. “They remain the teams to beat in our conference, which is arguably the toughest in the country,” he said. “Plattsburgh, Oneonta and Potsdam each shared 1-1 records against each other in 2008 and all expect to be vying for a spot in the conference tournament.” Plattsburgh will play a full schedule allotted per NCAA regulations, including road games against non-conference teams Western Connecticut, Goucher, Mary Washington and Saint Lawrence. “2009 is another scheduling upgrade. We hope the high level of competition prepares us for the tough SUNYAC schedule in April,” Kavanagh said. “Another exciting feature is that we play Long Island-area schools Merchant Marine, Farmingdale State and SUNY Maritime, which is important because it affords an opportunity for most of our players to play in their home region.”

Meet the Coaches P.J. Kavanagh, Head Coach P.J. Kavanagh was promoted to his current post on May 30, 2006. He originally joined the Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse coaching staff as defensive coordinator, serving in that capacity the previous two seasons. “I look forward to working with P.J. We both feel that men’s lacrosse has a firm foundation in place to succeed at Plattsburgh State,” Bruce Delventhal, director of athletics, said at the time of Kavanagh’s promotion following the 2006 season. The program continues to improve with Kavanagh at the helm with 17 victories in his first two seasons, which is the most in any two-year span in school history. In 2008, the Cardinals produced three all-State University of New York Athletic Conference selections--Frank Sangiovanni, Stephan Marino and Matt Maes--for the first time ever. Sangiovanni also became the first Cardinal to be named to the USILA North/South Division III All-Star Game. Tom Cerny set a school single-season record with 40 assists, and Luke Weidlein became Plattsburgh's first 30-30 man (32 goals30 assists) as well as the fastest 100-point scorer in the program's history. In addition, numerous team records were set or tied including 208 goals scored, 135 assists, 642 ground balls, 343 points and four conference wins. The manup offense ranked second in the nation with a 48.1 conversion rate, which led the SUNYAC. In Kavanagh's first year as head coach, the 2007 Cardinals set team records for victories (9-6), winning percentage (.600), road wins (5) and goals scored (208). Plattsburgh ranked eighth in NCAA scoring offense (and first in the SUNYAC) at 13.87 goals per game, which was another school benchmark. Sangiovanni, as a junior, led SUNYAC and was 10th in the NCAA with 3.20 gpg, and freshman allconference pick Kyle Norchi was second in SUNYAC and 23rd in NCAA scoring average at 4.07 points per game. Kavanagh helped goalkeeper Billy Hughes rank second in the SUNYAC with 10.46 saves per game in 2006. Under Kavanagh' tutelage, Hughes became Plattsburgh's all-time saves leader after only two-plus years wearing the Red and White, finishing with 490. With a wealth of coaching experience, Kavanagh came to Plattsburgh after coaching 10 years at New England prep schools, Bridgeport Barrage of professional Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and Henninger High School, his prep alma mater, in Syracuse, N.Y. He has mentored several college and high school All-Americans. A 1993 graduate of Colgate University, Kavanagh played four seasons for the NCAA Division I Red Raiders. He was the starting goalie for two years before moving to the long stick defensive midfield position for his final season. He was a team captain and the most improved player as a senior. He majored in geology and minored in geography. Kavanagh owns a master's degree in leadership and administration from Plattsburgh State. He lives in Peru, N.Y., with his wife Elizabeth and sons Sean (4), Aidan (1) and newborn Ryan.

Meet the Coaches Ryan Cavanagh Assistant Coach

Ryan Cavanagh, of Northport, N.Y., was hired as the men's lacrosse team's top assistant coach on Aug. 16. Cavanagh last season served as a student assistant coach, helping Plattsburgh to an 8-8 record. He groomed face-off specialist Ryan Price to set a school record with 99 ground balls in a season while ranking second in the State University of New York Athletic Conference with a 6.19 average per game. Cavanagh had a career year at the “X” to wrap up his 2007 senior campaign, winning 201 draws while losing 118 for a .630 winning percentage to rank 20th in NCAA Division III. He was named All-SUNYAC Honorable Mention. During his junior year in 2006, Cavanagh emerged as one of top face-off specialists in SUNYAC. Cavanagh also played goalie at Nassau Community College before donning a red and white uniform. He competed in lacrosse, wrestling and track at Kings Park High School. Born Ryan Christopher Cavanagh on March 24, 1983 in Kings Park, N.Y., he is the son of Tom and Jane Cavanagh. A former team captain for the Cardinals, Ryan was a political science major at Plattsburgh State, earning his bachelor's degree last May.

Larry Allen Volunteer Assistant Coach

Larry Allen is in his second season on the Plattsburgh State lacrosse coaching staff, working primarily with the Cardinals defensemen and midfielders. He works at the College as the Assistant Dean of Students, coming to Plattsburgh in June 2007. Allen received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 2000 from LeMoyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), where he played for four years at defensive midfielder for the NCAA Division II Dolphins. Allen gained a master’s degree in education in counseling and human development from St. Lawrence University in 2003. In 2000, he returned to Potsdam High School, his prep alma mater, to be the defensive coordinator for one year. From 2001-2003, he served as the assistant coach and defense coordinator at SUNY Canton under Jim Nee. Allen was promoted to head coach of the Kangaroos in 2003, leading the then-junior college program for the next three years.

CHAMPS/Life Skills Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse coach P.J. Kavanagh is in his second year coordinating the CHAMPS/Life Skills program for Cardinal Athletics. The CHAMPS (which stands for Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success) and Life Skills initiative is designed to support a student-athlete's development in academics, athletics, time management, team-building, personal issues, career choices and community service. Kavanagh is also the department’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor. Graduate student Matt Mueller, senior Jim Keenan and sophomore Tucker Glass represent the men’s lacrosse team on the SAAC Committee.

Today’s student-athlete faces a huge challenge in balancing classes, studying, practice, conditioning sessions and, if they’re lucky, a social life. At Plattsburgh State the entire coaching and athletic administration team is committed to giving every student-athlete all the resources they need to succeed in their sport as well as in the classroom. Within the Department of Sport and Wellness, the academic success of Cardinal athletes is regularly monitored and supported by Academic Coordinator Michelle St. Onge. As NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative for Plattsburgh State, Librarian Michael Miranda serves as the link between student-athletes and the faculty and is also an independent advocate for student-athlete well-being. Each coach designs an approach that works best with his or her team to be sure that student-athletes have the support they need to ensure their academic success. Whether it is quiet study hours on trips, study halls on campus, or just some advice on academic issues, the coaching staff is committed to academic achievement. Student-athletes can also seek help from the Claude J. Clark Learning Center. The Learning Center provides academic support to undergraduate and graduate students through peer tutoring, writing and math walk-ins, study skills workshops and extended time testing for those who need it. There are several computer labs on campus available for research and writing papers. Most campus buildings offer high-speed wireless connections to the Internet and the all Residence Halls are fully wired for broadband connectivity. Feinberg Library houses over 260,000 volumes, subscribes to over 1,000 periodicals and offers access to a world of information through its comprehensive research website. The Library also offers research support on a walk-up basis through its reference room, or Feinberg Library's Individualized Extended Reference Service (FLIER). The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, made up of representatives of each team, meets regularly with Athletic Director Bruce Delventhal to discuss issues affecting Cardinal student-athletes.

Facilities Fieldhouse Lacrosse Complex & Fitness Center

This state-of-the-art facility is available to all college community members for a modest fee. Located on the bottom floor of Memorial Hall, the air-conditioned Fitness Center consists of a 5,000-square-feet area with equipment for cardiovascular, resistive weight training and free weights. In addition, there are separate activity rooms for aerobics, spinning and kickboxing. Other services include personal training, rehabilitation and more. The Fitness Center is equipped with Club FM that allows you to listen to programming on one of five SONY television sets through your Walkman.

The Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Lacrosse/Soccer Complex had a new playing surface installed in 2004. The synthetic field built by A-Turf of Cheektowaga, N.Y., is a professional surface that can dissipate up to 3 inches of rain per hour, allowing for excellent drainage. The state-of-the-art field has a sand and rubber mixture, topped with plastic blades of grass, providing consistent playability, superior durability and traction.

The pressbox provides seating for a public address announcer, scoreboard operator, statistics crew and music engineer. In addition, there’s space for videographers on top of the roof. The seating capacity is for 500 spectators and the surrounding grounds allow for standing-room-only for a total of 1,000 to see lacrosse and soccer games at the Fieldhouse Complex. A view of midfield displays the Burghy mascot logo of the Plattsburgh State Cardinals. The scoreboard shows running time that can countdown or countup, penalty time for lacrosse and quarter/period.

The Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse opened its doors in 1972, serving as the host of the World University Games as the first event. The facility houses the 3,500-seat Stafford Ice Arena for Cardinal hockey teams, several varsity team rooms, facility management and coaches offices, staff/ faculty locker rooms, athletic training area and basketball courts. The Lacrosse Cardinals have one of the best indoor facilities in the SUNYAC to practice during inclement weather.

The Fieldhouse Complex is a lighted facility used for intercollegiate competition. It has hosted numerous conference and NCAA tournament sporting events. The lacrosse team can also use the Fieldhouse facility to practice in the event of inclement weather.

Dr. Merritt Spear is the coordinator of sports medicine for the Plattsburgh intercollegiate athletics program. His responsibilities include evaluation and monitoring of student-athletes’ health throughout the duration of their season, consulting with the head athletic trainer on prognosis and treatment of injuries. Dr. Spear is the former director of health services at Plattsburgh State and had a private practice in the city before coming to the College. He was inducted into the College’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 for his service to the athletics department. In January of 2006, Dr. Spear was the recipient of the Dr. David G Moyer award by the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association. The EATA's most prestigious award has been handed out annually since 1982 to the team physician who goes above the practice of medicine, and gives of himself as a humanitarian to the community to improve quality of life. Dr. Spear is a graduate of the University of Vermont and Albany Medical School. Team dentist Dr. Ann Spear and team orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Phil Volk are among several medical professionals who lend their time at games.

Jason Pachter began his duties as head athletic trainer at Plattsburgh State in August 2001. In addition, Pachter teaches classes in the Department of Sport and Wellness. He supervises a professional staff of three certified assistant trainers and four student assistants, which is charged with the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries within all 17 Cardinal teams. He’s also a strength and conditioning coach. Prior to Plattsburgh State, Pachter worked as associate head athletic trainer at Franklin College for one year, graduate assistant trainer at Western Michigan and head student trainer for the 1999 United States Tennis Association boys’ 16-18 national tournament. Pachter is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He earned a master of arts degree in physical education from Western in 2000, and a bachelor of arts degree in athletic training from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1998.

Takashi Moribe recently completed internships with the athletic training staffs at the University of the Pacfic and Stockton Lightning of Arena Football League2 before coming to Plattsburgh State this summer. At Pacific, he was the primary sports medicine contact for the Tigers’ NCAA Division I women’s basketball and cross country programs. He's also worked with the Houston Texans of the National Football League and the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball. Moribe will be the primary athletic trainer for men's soccer, men's basketball and men's lacrosse of the Cardinals. Moribe received a master's degree from the University of Arkansas in 2007 and a bachelor's from the University of Hawaii at Monoa in 2001. He also studied at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, from April 1998 to July 2000 and July 2001 to March 2002.

Plattsburgh State offers two state-of-the-art athletic training facilities dedicated to the wellbeing of student-athletes, who are given the best possible care and prevention for their injuries. The sports medicine staff utilizes a wide array of physical therapy equipment, including low-level laser therapy, electric stimulation, ultrasound and manual therapy techniques. The Field House facility, located on the bottom floor of the Stafford Ice Arena, is utilized by intercollegiate programs from soccer, hockey, track and field, baseball, softball, lacrosse and tennis. The other facility is housed on the second floor of Memorial Hall, where the Cardinal Fitness Center also is located. Morning treatments and injury evaluations take place here. It is used by the volleyball, cross country and basketball teams.

For five decades, the State University of New York Athletic Conference has been a model for public school athletic organizations and strived to strengthen the physical education programs of member institutions. The New York State Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was founded in May 1958 when representatives from eight schools convened in Albany to draft and ratify a constitution, and the upstart league was renamed the SUNYAC in 1963. Commissioner Dr. Patrick R. Damore, left, is starting his 30th year at the helm, guiding the 10school coalition to national prominence in athletics and academics. The charter members in 1958 included Albany, Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh and Potsdam. Excluding Albany, the current conference alignment also includes Geneseo (1959), Fredonia (1959) and third-year provisional Morrisville (2007). One of the nation’s strongest NCAA Division III conferences, the SUNYAC extended its athletic prowess in 1983 when women’s programs were added to the mix. The SUNYAC currently offers conference championships in 20 sports: nine for men and 11 for women. Women compete in basketball, cross country, field hockey, in/outdoor track&field, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. Men’s sports are baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, in/outdoor track&field, lacrosse, soccer and swimming and diving. No strangers to NCAA tournament events, the SUNYAC boasts 33 national team championships, countless individual champions and scores of All-Americans. In 1955, Brockport brought the SUNYAC its first NCAA championship in men’s soccer. Plattsburgh won the conference’s first three titles in men’s ice hockey in 1987 (vacated), 1992 and 2001. The 1985 Cortland outdoor track and field squad gave the SUNYAC its first NCAA crown on the women’s side. The Red Dragons also won the 2006 Division III men’s lacrosse championship, and have appeared in the last three national title contests. William Laundry came to Plattsburgh State in 1969 as Director of Housing, responsible for the coordination of the housing facilities to meet the growing needs of the various educational programs sponsored by the College. He was promoted to Director of Residence Life in 1976, a position he held until he was appointed Director of Campus Life in 1980. Laundry has served as Dean of Students since 1996, and was promoted to Interim Vice President for Student Affairs in October of 2003. He was named to the VP post permanently in August 2006. Laundry is involved in many college-wide committees and community organizations. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SUNY-Albany. In October 2005, he was made an honorary alumnus of Plattsburgh State.

Dr. John Ettling became the 10th president of the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh on June 15, 2004 after serving as vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of North Dakota for six years. Dr. Ettling began his academic career in 1978 as a visiting faculty member at Northwestern University. From 1979-95, he served as a faculty member in the Honors College and History Department at the University of Houston and as History chair there during the mid-1980s. When President Ettling arrived at SUNY Plattsburgh in 2004, the college was struggling with a declining enrollment, a stalled capital campaign, and a slowed accreditation effort for its education program. Since then, the campus community has risen to the challenges under his leadership, and are confronting these and other issues. Enrollment of new undergraduate, transfer, and graduate students has increased dramatically. An aggressive effort toward accreditation of the College’s largest program is under way, and President Ettling has taken a very active role in Plattsburgh’s first-ever major capital campaign to raise $15 million. He also established the Office of First-Year Programs and Retention Efforts, designed to educate, comfort and entertain freshmen who may be away from home and their parents for the first time. A strong advocate of public service engagement, Ettling serves on the board of directors of several organizations. An accomplished scholar, Ettling has lectured throughout the country, presented research papers, served as a commentator and panelist on various issues and received numerous awards Originally from Houston, Texas, Ettling holds a B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Virginia. He received his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and is a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honors society.

Bruce Delventhal was named director of athletics at Plattsburgh State on June 28, 2005. The Cardinals have achieved unparalleled success since his arrival, with 19 teams appearing in the NCAA Championships in the last three years. Women’s ice hockey has won the last two national titles, men’s hockey and women’s cross country were the national runner-up last season, softball finished fourth at the 2007 World Series and 2005 men’s soccer was third. In addition, Plattsburgh has captured 12 SUNYAC/ECAC titles and scores of conference individual champions. Bruce was instrumental in the renovated Stafford Ice Arena, which will have a new look for 2008-09. Bruce formed the Friends of Plattsburgh State Athletics, which is the fundraising arm of the department, and has worked with several organizations to help bring Cardinal teams closer to the community. Bruce has worked for the American Hockey Coaches’ Association since 1988 as secretary/treasurer. As an officer of the AHCA, he’s charged with creating and implementing budgets, developing convention agendas and generating sponsorships. He is also a member of the board of Hockey Coaches Care, a non-profit charitable organization which raises money to help people in need at all levels of the hockey community. Bruce held men’s hockey coaching positions at Union College, Rochester Tech (RIT) and Princeton. He led RIT to the 1985 NCAA Division III National Championship, and was an ECAC Coach of the Year during his Union tenure. He’s also taught and coached at the Northwood School in Lake Placid, N.Y. A former businessman and avid New York Yankees fans, Bruce is chair of the NCAA III Men’s Ice Hockey Championship committee, Women’s Studies Associate and Plattsburgh Rotary member. Bruce received a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College and a master’s from Princeton Seminary.

Hawkins Hall is the site of the original Plattsburgh State Normal School that opened its doors to students in 1889. It’s one of the most distinctive buildings on campus, housing several offices including that of the President’s and Institutional Advancement.

HIGH-RISE DORMITORIES From left to right, Wilson, Moffitt, deFredenburg and Hood co-ed residence halls were built in the late 1960s. These nine- and ten-story buildings provide sensational views of the college campus, Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks from the upper floors. Double-occupancy and suite rooms are equipped with high-speed Internet and cable-ready TV connections. Recreational, lounges and laundry facilities are also available. KEHOE BUILDING Known affectionately as the “power tower,” this building houses the administrative offices of admissions, student financial services, career development, human resources, registrar and student affairs. CHAMPLAIN VALLEY HALL Once a residence hall, this building is now home to traditional humanities programs, including English, foreign languages and literature, history, journalism and philosophy. HAWKINS HALL The original building on campus currently houses offices including the President and Institutional Advancement as well as classrooms, the Honors Center and the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium. Hawkins once contained the College’s first gymnasium. FEINBERG COURTYARD The social networking center of the College, the Angell Center, Feinberg Library and Myers Fine Arts Building can be found in this area. BEAUMONT HALL This classroom building houses the biology and psychology programs. A pedestrian bridge provides safe passage over Broad Street traffic to the north-side of campus where Hawkins and Hudson halls are located.
