Misery Discussion activities key 1– 8  Open answers 9 Possible questions for Paul Sheldon: When did you write your first Misery Chastain novel? How did you think of the name ‘Misery’? Is Misery based on anybody you know? Do you think you will every get married again? Why do you always go to Colorado to finish your novels? 10 Annie: I bought you another present, as well as the wheelchair. I’ll go and get it for you. Well? What do you think? Paul: It’s great. A real antique. Annie: I didn’t get it as an antique. I got it secondhand. It was a bargain, too. She wanted forty-five dollars for it, but I got it for forty because it has no n. Paul: You did really well. Annie: I told her that n was one of the letters in my favourite author’s name. Paul: It has two of the letters in my favourite nurse’s name. But what will I write on this typewriter, do you think? Annie: Oh, Paul! I don’t think – I know! You’re going to write a new novel. It will be your best yet. Misery’s Return! It’ll be a book just for me. It’ll be my payment for nursing you back to health. The only copy in the whole world of the newest Misery book! Paul: But Annie, Misery’s dead. Annie: No she’s not. Even when I was angry at you I knew she wasn’t really dead. I knew you couldn’t really kill her, because you’re good. Paul: Annie, will you tell me one thing? Annie: Of course, dear. Paul: If I write this book for you, will you let me go when I’ve finished? Annie: You talk as if I were keeping you prisoner, Paul. I think that when you’ve finished you should be ready to meet other people again. 11–19  Open answers 20 Possible answer: Annie has left me alone in the house. Today I thought she was really going totally mad. She came into my room with a rat caught in a trap and then she killed it by squeezing it in one of her bare hands! I have no idea how long she will be. I hate her, but I need her to give me food and keep me clean. I must find a way out of here! 21–30  Open answers

31 Possible answer: My colleague and I returned to the house of Annie Wilkes earlier today in order to ask her further questions about the disappearance of the writer, Paul Sheldon. When we arrived we found the door to the house open. There were obvious signs that an incredibly violent struggle had taken place inside the house. There was spilled wine, broken furniture and many traces of blood. We found the woman Annie Wilkes in the barn. She was lying dead, holding an axe tightly in her hands. It looked as if she were preparing to return to the house in order to continue her attack on the writer, Paul Sheldon. He was still alive in the house. He had been very seriously injured – his left foot and the thumb of his left hand had been amputated and he was suffering from burns. We immediately called an ambulance. 32–33  Open answers
