PRESSURE SYSTEMS GROUP 2013 Short Course Programme 02 - Practical Pressure Vessel Design with Examples using BS PD5500 5-7 June 2013, £1090, Course Director: Prof David Nash: [email protected] This course is targeted at those engineers who are new to pressure vessel design and PD 5500 in particular. Extensive examples and sample calculations are used to explain the design approach for the majority of typical pressure vessels. Starting with the PED, materials selection and low temperature design, the rules for cylinders, heads and cones under internal and external pressure are developed. Supports design, jacketed vessels, nozzles and openings, flat ends, bolted flange connections, local load analysis and fatigue assessment are all considered. A simplified treatment of the use of finite element analysis in pressure vessel design is also given. Participants are expected to have a good understanding of general engineering mechanics. No previous experience of pressure vessel design codes and standards is necessary.

03 – An Overview of Pressure Vessel Design using PD 5500, ASME VIII and EN 13445 3-4 June 2013, £830, Course Director: Prof David Nash: [email protected] This course is targeted at those engineers who are new to pressure vessel design, and covers the requirements of the PED and the three main design codes used in the UK – PD 5500, ASME VIII Division 1 and EN 13445. Starting with an introduction to the terminology and concepts used in pressure vessel design, the various topics covered include materials, joint efficiencies, cylinders, heads and cones under internal and external pressure, nozzles and openings, flat ends, bolted flanged connections, supports and local load analysis. Participants are expected to have a good understanding of general engineering mechanics. No previous experience of pressure vessel design codes and standards is necessary, but would be helpful.

06 – FE Analysis of Pressure System Components 16-17 September 2013, £875, Course Director: Dr Jim Wood: [email protected] The use of analysis and simulation in industry is growing, along with interest in Design by Analysis. The pressure to reduce time-to-market for new products, improve quality and reduce cost is also driving interest. This programme has been designed to compliment the 3-day Design by Analysis course, which runs in the same week. However, it would also provide a general introduction to the technology or a refresher where appropriate. It is designed to provide a greater insight into finite element analysis, which is the primary tool utilised in Design by Analysis. The course concentrates on practical applications and provides sufficient theory to promote safe and effective use of these finite element analysis products.

07 - Design-by-Analysis – Concepts & Practice 18-20 September 2013, £1100, Course Director: Prof Donald Mackenzie: [email protected] This three-day course introduces the concepts and practice of Pressure Vessel Design by Analysis, including fatigue analysis, in the context of the PD5500, EN 13445, ASME III and ASME VIII Div 2 pressure vessel codes. The delegates are introduced to the scope and purpose of the DBA rules, basic concepts in pressure vessel design, ductile failure mechanisms and fatigue failure of welded structures. Pressure vessel DBA and International Institute of Welding guidelines are explained and practical design procedures such as stress linearisation and weld hot-spot stress procedures are described in detail. A third of the course is taken up by hands-on analysis sessions, at which delegates perform DBA and Fatigue analysis using elastic and elastic-plastic Finite Element Analysis. Delegates with limited experience of Finite Element Analysis may wish to consider the 2-day course entitled ‘Finite Element Analysis of Mechanical Pressure System Components’. This course runs for the 2 days preceding this course.

08 - Design of Piping Systems 23-24 September 2013, £830, Course Director: Prof Jim Boyle: [email protected] Delegates are provided with a broad understanding of the various aspects of design and analysis of piping systems. Basic concepts in pipework design and analysis are addressed including an overview of the design and analysis sections of Codes BS806, ANSI B31.1, B31.3, and EN 13480. Flexibility analysis of piping systems and computer software is also employed. Behaviour of components includes straight pipes, elbows and branches. The implementation of these approaches in the

Codes is also covered. This highly popular course has a wide appeal to all engineers associated with the design of piping systems.

Distance Learning Course - Pressure Vessel FEA & Distance Learning Course – Pressure Vessel DBA Both cost £1260 each. Start Date 1 September 2012 onwards - Last Date for Registration 1 February 2013 This was a new course introduced in 2009, and is offered with Tutor access for 5 months. Please note that this distance learning module is not formally examined. The quizzes contained in the module are for personal use only. A Certificate of Completion is provided at the end of the 5 months' study period. The course is generally more extensive than the on-campus course with similar title and contains a significant number of worked examples.
