RED GLOVES a Radu Gabrea film Based on the novel “Red Gloves” by Eginald Schlattner
Director: Radu Gabrea; Screenplay: Radu Gabrea, Gabriel Sîrbu, Wolfgang J. Ruf, Bogdan Huşanu, after the novel „The Red Gloves” by Eginald Schlattner; Producers: Radu Gabrea, Victoria Cociaş; DOP: Ion Marinescu; Music: Thomas Osterhoff; Editor: Melania Oproiu; Set designer: Florin Gabrea; Costumes: Svetlana Mihăilescu; Starring: Alexandru Mihăescu, Udo Schenk, Andi Vasluianu, Mircea Rusu, Victoria Cociaş, Ioana Iacob Production country: Romania, 2010; Original language: Romanian, German (English Subtitle) Original format: 35mm; Support for screening: 35 mm, DigiBeta, DVD; Genre: feature film; Running time: 117 min. Synopsis In 1957, one year after the bloody suppression by Soviet tanks of the Hungarian Revolution of November 1956, the communist regime in Romania, fearing similar events, began a large-scale programme of arrests and trials designed to quash any attempt to imitate the events from neighbouring Hungary at home. In Transylvania, where news of the events in their neighbouring country had spread to the leaders of the Romanian, Hungarian, and German populations, and where the political situation risked sliding out of control, the «Securitate» unleashed a particularly extensive campaign of arrests. One of the victims of this campaign is Felix Goldschmidt, a young man of Saxon origin and a student at Cluj University, where he is also head of a literary group. While initially believing he is the victim of a mistake, Felix gradually becomes part of the infernal machine of Stalinist interrogation techniques in which individual guilt is of no importance and everything is subject to a system of victimisation, blame-casting and de-personalisation – which, despite his initial resistance, transforms Felix into a tame instrument of the forces of repression. The psychological pressure, torture, repeated humiliation and intimidation turn Felix into a witness for the prosecution in the cases brought against some of his writer friends, and in the end he betrays his own brother. Gradually, FELIX becomes mentally unstable, is torn between desperation and euphoria,
and slides into a world of deceptive illusions. It is therefore no longer clear – neither to him nor the viewer – whether his cell mate, the worker-party activist, the judge condemned to death or the Catholic priest with whom he discusses the communist future of mankind are, like him, also victims of the terror or merely actors in a monstrous charade. Even the sophisticated interrogator, with whom Felix discusses “catharsis” and philosophy, ends up in the hands of the Securitate interrogators, his former partners in terror. Gradually becoming mentally unstable, torn between desperation and euphoria, Felix is himself betrayed and then used as an instrument of the system of repression. He writes report after report, uncovering imaginary plots, all of which leaves him a wreck. After receiving a token sentence for his two years spent in Securitate custody, being released and returning home to his family, FELIX discovers that his brother, whom he had thought saved, has been sentenced to 10 years on the basis of his statements. On the verge of madness, FELIX is once more arrested by Securitate agents, who promise to cure him... The novel «Red Gloves» uses powerful imagery to describe the mechanisms of terror employed in the Stalinist trials held during communist Romania, especially in Transylvania, a little known or even entirely unknown part of Eastern Europe. The film of the same name by Radu Gabrea is an adaptation of the novel by the German-language Romanian author Eginald Schlattner. “It is through novels like this that we, those born at a later time, come to know Europe”, wrote the newspaper The Frankfurter Rundschau in its review of Eginald Schlattner’s novel. The same is true of the film of the same name. Screening history: 2010: Transilvania International Film Festival (Romania); Independent Producers Film Festival – IPIFF (Romania); "White Night" of Romanian Films – Bucharest ( Romania); Sao Paolo International Film Festival / 34 Mostra Internacional de Cinema Sao Paulo – (Brazil); The Northen Film Festival – Leeuwarden, (Nedherlands); Saturno Interantional Film Festival Roma, (Italy) – Award for THE BEST ACTOR for Alexandu Mihaescu, in the main role of Felix Goldschmidt.
