Accepted Date: 14/06/2015; Published Date: 27/06/2015 Abstract: Homeopathy is becoming legitimate medical system than conventional system of medicine by it’s two principle-“Similia Similibus Curantur” and “Law of minimum dose”. The treatment of disease is primarily based on characteristic symptoms of patient. About 2500 plant species are known to be useful for medicinal preparation of different kinds. Over 300 plants are now traditionally used drug sources in homeopathy. A checklist of 107 plants species belonging to 51 families and 102 genera used in homeopathic medicine is described and discussed. Maximum number of plants have been recorded from the family Asteraceae (19 species) followed by Acanthaceae (6 species), Cucurbitaceae( 6 species), Apocyanaceae (5 species), Solanaceae (5 species), Ranunculaceae (4 species), Apiaceae( 4 species) and rest of the studied families contains 1 – 3 species each. Some important angiosperms in

homeopathy system of medicine are-1. Allium cepa L.; 2. Arnica montana L.; 3. Anemone pulsatilla Stoerch.; 4. Bryonia alba Bull.; 5. Calendula officinalis L.; 6. Cephaelis ipecacuanha (Bort.) A. INTRODUCTION Now-a-days there are several systems of medicines in world-wide such as Allopathic medicine system, homeopathic medicine system, modern medicine, Ayurvedic medicine system etc., but homeopathy is most legitimate system of medicine in diagnosis and treating medical problems harmlessly. A German doctor, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathy, was first person who established it’s the therapeutic science through his continued observation of homeopathic drug application on ailing patients and tried to provide cures on the basis of the overall disease rather than focusing on individual diseases. Homeopathy system of medicine is based on two basic natural principle, first in latin – “ similiasimilibus” or like with like that means a drug can only cure that which it can produce in a healthy human body and second- “law of minimum dose”- the notion that lower the dose of the medication, the greater it’s effectiveness. Homeopathic doctor should consider all mental, physical and emotional aspects of the patient. Homeopathic sources remedies are derived mainly from six source like-(1) plants, (2) animals, (3) minerals (natural salts), (4) diseased tissues or secretions containing bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, (5) hormones and healthy tissues, (6) imponderables (such as magnetism x-ray, radiation) etc. Out of above six sources of homeopathic medicines, the project has been dealing with the plant kingdom specially some important Angiospermic plants. In India considerable period, homeopathy become a popular therapy for several acute and chronic diseases. More than 30,000 plants specimen of medicinal importance are grown all over the world, but only around 2,500 plants species are known to be useful for medicine preparation. Over 300 plants are now traditionally used as drug source in homeopathy. In India for considerable period, homeopathy became a popular therapy for several acute and chronic diseases. In India agro-climatic diverse plant types are unique source of homeopathic drugs. Many such drug yielding plants currently cultivated in India and a good quality of drug materials or crude extracts are imported from outside the country. Homeopathic medicine is very essentially an individualistic treatment than the other systems of medicines due to the following reasons – i)

Drug requirement is minimum. Available Online at www.ijprbs.com

ii)

Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted.

iii)

It has no side effects.

iv)

Cure a disease from its root point.

v)

Less expensive than other medicine system so, affordable for all.

vi)

The medicines are mostly sugar based so that it is very easy to eat for children.

METHODOLOGY To acquire the knowledge about contribution of medicinal plants in Homeopathy, a large number of literatures have been consulted. The name of homeopathic plants are taken from different literature such as Prain1(1903); Hooker2(1887); Guha Bakshi3(1984); Mabberly4(2008); Udayan and Balachandan5(2009) and valid author citation of these plants has been checked from IPNI6 website. The information about common name, chemical constituents and medicinal value of these plants have been obtained or gathered from different literature such as Lal and Singh 7(2009); Panigrahi and Shahu8(2000); Dharma and dharma9(1994); Ghani10(2003); Paranjpe11(2001); Joshi12(2003);Prajapati et.al.13(2003);Bharatan et.al.14(2002); Brummitt15(1992); Stearn16(1992); vanZandvoort17(1994-1996) and IK18(1997). For information interviews of well-known homeopathic doctors like Dr. Ananda Mohan Ganguly; Dr. Samar Paul; Lokhnath Dutta has also been consulted and recorded their valuable advice. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION India is has seven national medical systems (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Allopathy, Homoeopathy) of which one of India's oldest health therapies from the south is Homoeopathy. The alternative medical system of homeopathy was developed in Germany at the end of the 18th century. In India, homoeopathy is one of the important systems of medicine. The market is growing at 25% a year, and more than 100 million people depend solely on this form of therapy Available Online at www.ijprbs.com

for their health care. Around 10% of India's population depends solely on homoeopathy for their health care. Homeopathic remedies are derived from 6 major sources such as plants, minerals, animals, diseased tissues, hormones and healthy tissues and imponderables. Present topic deals only with some Angiospermic plants, a part of plant kingdom. About 2,500 plant species are known to be useful for medicinal preparation of different kinds. Over 300 plants are now traditionally used drug sources in homoeopathy. Many of the drug yielding plants are currently cultivated is India as well as some are procuring from wild sources also. A checklist of 107 plant species used in homeopathic medicine is described and discussed. These plants are belonging to 51 families and 102 genera. Maximum number of plants have been recorded from the family Asteraceae (19 species) followed by Acanthaceae (6 species), Cucurbitaceae( 6 species), Apocyanaceae (5 species), Solanaceae (5 species), Ranunculaceae (4 species) and Apiaceae( 4 species). Rest of the studied families contains 1 – 3 species each. But the drug adulteration is now a great concern of homoeopathic therapy in future. Some of the potential plants which are significant for production of important medicines in Homoeopathic therapy. Homoeopathic therapy is very popular among the people of India and abroad, because it is very cost effective and curative treatment from their origin and it has no side effect in human body. Therefore, this therapy is gradually increasing throughout the world including both developing and developed countries.
