The branch Annual General Meeting will be held on 23 February 2014 at Donvale Sports Ground. Nominations for contested committee positions must be received by 23 January 2014. Nomination forms are available via the web site, The Spare Tyre or me. Nominations have been received for all formal positions, except that of secretary. Greg Rees has accepted nomination as president for 2014 and Holly would like to step down from the secretary’s position. It is still open for members to stand for any position and we would really like to see a number of members nominate to join the committee and take on the task of running branch related social events and bring in some fresh views. If you think you have some skills that can help the continuity of this great branch and club please do step up and get involved. The branch can only continue to provide for the enjoyment of members by having an active and constantly evolving committee. Our sponsors greatly assist the finances of the branch and I do encourage you to support them when it comes to bikes, servicing, accessories and clothing. First I would like to thank Rob McCormack for volunteering and doing his first effort at ride leading on Fathers’ Day. His efforts were appreciated by the many people who turned up at Kalkallo for the ride in beautiful weather conditions and there was a great mix of both familiar and newer faces. After briefings we set off with Rob leading on his Yamaha and with Pat doing Tail End duties on his red Harley. Stefan was there on his club plated BMW, Chris and Sally on their Ducatis, Terry and Roger on their Moto Guzzis, Garry and partner on the Victory and Mike on his VFR1200 certainly added to the variety of machines and faces. BMW were represented by Doug, Jack and Samuel. Harry, Max and Les showed the flag for Suzuki and Andrew, Bob Tate, Martin and I showed the flag for Honda. We headed north to Wallan and then across some lovely open gorge country to Romsey before heading north again through Lancefield an on through forest and farming areas peppered with large granite outcrops along sweeping roads towards Pyalong before looping south again (along a lovely little road I had never previously enjoyed) to Tallarook where we stopped for morning tea. After enjoying some camaraderie and refreshment in the picnic area we set off again through Trawool and on towards Yea along the beautiful curves of the Goulburn Highway with views to the river. Traffic was a bit busy along here and the lack of overtaking places ensured we rode at a sensible pace and enjoyed the scenery. Just before Yea we turned north along the Ghin Ghin Road through Highlands and looped back to Seymour and entered town coming in past the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk and memorials. We then adjourned for lunch in the park between the river and the pub – How convenient was that? It was obviously a well planned and researched ride & enjoyed by all who attended. Rob, Thank you and well done!

The weather forecast had been rather poor and a relatively small group assembled at Dandenong in cool but ideal riding conditions for the shortish ride around the Mornington Peninsula. Samuel volunteered to perform TEC duties. BMW was very well represented by Anita, Brian, Jeff, Pat, Ron and Samuel. It was also good to see Sue B out and about again. New member Jim arrived on his cruiser just as we were getting under way so we only managed the shortest of welcomes for him. The first few kilometres were a simple transport “leg’ along the Westernport Highway until we turned right and went through Somerville and on to Mornington where we joined the Esplanade at its extreme northern end. We then followed the Esplanade south past some impressive real estate with views across the marina and pier at Mornington and continued with assorted bay views through Mt Martha, under the canal (a rather unique bit of engineering for Australia) at Safety Beach and then stopped by the jetty at Dromana for morning tea. We then enjoyed morning tea and camaraderie with view across to merchant ships coming up the South Channel. After exchanging sufficient disgraceful lies we mounted up and headed up the very tight bends to Arthurs Seat in beautiful riding weather. We then headed west along Browns Road to St Andrews Beach before looping back through Boneo and then past Cape Schanck with views across farmland to Bass Straight before stopping by the pier at Flinders for lunch with views across to Phillip Island. A quick stop at the local bakery, which sells giant vanilla slices, produced the dessert with which we all celebrated Barry’s birthday after enjoying lunch at the picnic tables overlooking the water.

A warm and sunny morning saw approximately thirty bikes assemble at Lilydale for Anita’s ride to Mirboo North. President John welcomed new and regular members and Anita provided the riding group with the details of the ride route. We took the Warburton Highway through Wandin and Seville and made a right turn at Woori Yallock, following the road through Yellingbo, Cockatoo and into Gembrook where we turned and headed towards Pakenham. We hit the highway for a short run before taking the Koo-wee-rup Road and then turned onto the Bayles Road, travelling through Bayles, Modella, Longwarry and into Drouin for morning tea. After a rest and refresh, we left Drouin and travelled south through Hallora and Poowong East. It’s interesting to note that the little patch of unmade road near Hallora is still there. The responsible authority is sure taking its time to repair it ! The scenery through Gippsland is always good and those green hills are certainly looking a treat at the moment. There are also many good roads and Anita took us on those roads to travel in and around Korumburra, Leongatha and a little place called Outrim and eventually into our destination for the day - Mirboo North. We travelled approximately 200kms. The bakery at our destination was doing a good trade with pies, cakes and coffee and we all enjoyed sitting in the sun for a general catch up. We also had the opportunity to chat with Matthew, who was on his first ride with our branch. Matthew sent John a quick email after the ride and here is a portion of his email –

A sunny morning at our Dandenong starting point saw approximately 25 bikes assembled. Ride leader, Alf, gave a brief run-down of our anticipated route. We travelled along the M1 freeway for a short distance before turning off and heading towards Emerald. We took Salisbury Road which ran along the top of a ridge and offered nice views. It was somewhere along here a small echidna was in the process of crossing the road. His position looked precarious but he managed to make it across and into the safety of the roadside grass. Phew ! It was close ! Another few turns before taking Army Road, over the highway onto the Nar Nar Goon/Longwarry Road before turning at Thirteen Mile Road which was a straight run for a few kilometres. A right turn and straight into a strong wind, then left into Heads Road which provided some relief from the wind. During the ride there were obvious signs of recent strong winds with a good number of large, fallen tree branches on the ground and along the roadside. We stopped at Lang Lang for morning tea. After coffee break we headed out on McDonalds Track, into the lovely township of Loch, taking a left and riding up the hill. Then along a narrow road (which seemed to be about one-car width, especially when we met an oncoming car !). We continued on and rode through Kernot, then along a few minor roads in the general direction of Glen Alvie. It was about 30km out from Wonthaggi at a t-intersection that two of our riders had a mishap. Both riders were shaken but fortunately seemed to be unhurt, although their motorcycles suffered damaged. After checking persons and property and a couple of members staying with these two riders to ensure all was OK, the remainder of the riding group continued on to Wonthaggi, our destination for the day. Thanks to Alf for organising a great ride on quite a few different roads through the Gippsland area. Thanks also to Bill for riding tail.

Twenty two bikes were assembled at Dandenong on the Sunday morning ready for a “mystery ride” to Gippsland. The weather was cool but no rain in sight. President John gave us a short address about ride protocol and reminded us to take it easy in light of the bingle that happened the week before. Unforseen events do take place so our concentration level should always be high. Ride leader Barry gave us some rough instructions about what to expect and then proceeded to tell us a joke. “Why do crows only get hit by trucks on the road? Because when you see them in the trees they are always calling out “car” “car” “car”. With that we began our journey. A little freeway riding at first, Lang Lang, Nyora, but then we headed off on some minor roads, passing at some stage through “Woodleigh” and making our way to Kongwak by some unknown roads (to me anyway). The Kongwak market was in full swing and is definitely the place to go for some pre-worn clothes. The best part of the market was the lamb sausages with onions in bread washed down with a local coffee. The market is a regular event and well worth a visit. About a half of the riders left us at this point but we made our way to Korumburra via the main road and diverted to “Ruby” before making our way for lunch at Kellys in Korumburra. In all it was a most interesting ride and many thanks to Barry for his leading. After lunch I travelled with John & Sam via the Highway to Koo-we-rup, Upper Pakenham, Paternoster Rd, Emerald, Kallista, Sassafras, 1 in 20 to the Basin then home. A good day was had by all and about 300k completed safely.

Well, my day for the ride started the evening before. I was sunburnt and after spending the day on and off the bike in my summer mesh jacket and gloves, I was a little put off with the strikingly different weather forecast for Rogers ride the next day. Watching the news, cold, wet, high winds, storms and snow falls down to 1000 metres was what I heard Lavinia tell Melbournians on the TV. I know Trentham, where the morning tea was scheduled, is one of the first towns off the mountains that snow falls on such days. I thought I’m really over the winter riding; this is cruel after such warm sunny days. Do I still want to go? Hmmmm. I could imagine some others were thinking the same thing. 6.30am Sunday morning the alarm wakes me up, the sun is shining and no wind gusts, a sign to get my sunburnt self up and into my layers of thermals, wool top and thick winter riding gear. I, stiffly layered, climbed onto my steed and headed off to meet up with Ron and Anita. As we rode towards Kalkallo, the dark clouds could be seen gathering from the south west. There’s no way out of it. When I get to Kalkallo I have to put that last wet weather gear layer on. We arrived rather early, as we’d given it plenty of time to detour and avoid the Melbourne Marathon road blocks. It was pleasing to see many bikes/riders arriving and supporting Roger on his second attempt at leading his first ride, despite the forecast. His first attempt thwarted by having sold his bike but having yet to replace it. All in all I counted 16 bikes at the starting point, but as the rain appeared 3 chose to head home after some stirring from those who remained. Maybe the thought of watching Bathurst in the warmth and comfort of a lounge chair was a little too tempting. James arrived on his black triumph, his first ride with the branch, which brought the final number of bikes to 14. After the briefing the weather improved slightly and the fearless group of riders were off. For someone who had just put their first ride together, it was clear very early on, a lot of thought had gone into the planning. It was evident we were going to be travelling in directions and along roads not frequented by our typical rides. My thoughts were this is going to be a good day regardless of weather, I’m glad I did come out. It was going to satisfy the adventurous side in all of us. We were led down Donnybrook Rd then left into Mickleham Rd and right into Bardwell Drive but instead of the usual turn right, we turned left at Konagaderra Rd which becomes Oaklands Rd R to Sunbury Rd. It was here we able to ride alongside the airliners coming into land at Tullamarine airport. No we weren’t recreating a Top Gun scene. From Sunbury Road we turned right into Wildwood Rd, and then left to Konagaderra Rd with a small patch of road works and then right onto Lancefield Rd. After a short stint it was left into Sutherlands Rd and right into Amess Rd. A left turn into Gisborne Kilmore Rd led the group through Riddles Creek and New Gisborne to the north end of Gisborne where the right into Ross Watt Rd led us out again parallel with the highway and right at Black Forest Drive going under the highway and onto the old Calder highway to Woodend.

This stretch of the old highway is strange to me as I used to travel it nearly daily from Bendigo to Melbourne when it was the main thoroughfare and to see it now so quiet is very peaceful. But the speed limit was never lifted from the 90kph despite it being four lanes of very quiet road. This is frustrating as it would be a great little run for a squirt on the throttle. But alas, I believe it is still heavily patrolled so 90kph was my limit. As we arrived to the south end of Woodend we turned left into Ashbourne Rd. Now this is where my adventurous spirit really came into play. For years I had planned to venture along this road to see what it produced but my maps indicated it turned to dirt road so had put it off while I was still riding the scooter. I often look down roads and think I’ve got to have a look down there one day. It’s these little exploring moments that find some real gems to add to a ride. I finally was going to see this one. I was not disappointed and no dirt road. After turning left into Chanters Rd and right into Pearsons Rd we headed west on the Kyneton-Trentham Rd into Trentham for morning tea. On arrival a few of us compared temperature readings on our bikes and found it to have got as cold as 8 degrees. This level of hypothermia was easily fixed with a hot drink and hot food. As we moved on for the final leg of the ride, the sun came out and provided a hint of warmth to the day. The group rode down the Glendale Trentham forest Rd on to Ballan-Greendale Rd to Ballan then Ballan-Daylesford Rd then a chance for a bit of a twist of the throttle along the Daylesford- Malmsbury Rd. The final destination was at the Malmsbury Bakery for lunch. Despite the weather it was a great ride with a variety of road types to satisfy all. Many seasoned riders stated quite of few of the roads were new to them. I hope to do this ride again, imagine how much greater it would be on a sunny day. Well done Roger.
RIDE REPORT : SNOWY RIDE — NOVEMBER 1ST—3RD 2013 RIDE LEADER : ROGER FOOT RIDE REPORT : ROGER FOOT A crisp day with perfect riding conditions saw Mick Hedger, Matthew Gale and myself depart Kalkallo at 07.30 on Friday November 1st en route for a rendezvous in Yea at 08.30 with Sam Bateman and late entrant Jeff Thorne. Jeff had already registered for The Snowy Ride and booked accommodation when he saw the notice on the website and asked to join us for the ride up. We reached Yea on time and took off for Mansfield and Whitfield, pausing near the top for some spectacular photos courtesy of official photographer Sam, before our first break at the Whitfield Café. This proved heavily populated with a group of BMW off roaders and an enthusiastic bunch of locals who were lying in wait to sell tickets in the Wangaratta Community Raffle (1st prize a 2L Ford Focus, to be drawn Dec 8th). From there Sam had plotted a route via Myrtleford to Happy Valley Road and over the pass to join the Kiewa Valley Hwy, before taking off over Keegan’s Bridge to join the Gundowring Rd north to the Omeo Hwy. As promised it proved to be “only a farm road” and afforded the opportunity to blow the cobwebs out of the motor. A number of turns to reach the Murray Valley Hwy foxed Jeff who hared off in the direction of Yackandandah trying to catch up with the pack, but fortunately he realised after a while that he was on his own and turned around to join us for lunch in Tallangatta. From there a long ride to Corryong and Khancoban brought us to the heavily patrolled Alpine Way and ultimately Thredbo Village around 17.30. We were fortunate to have secured a Riverside Cabin at a special rate for The Snowy Ride which gave us 3 nights for $100 per head. It proved comfortable and well enough equipped to enable us to cook up a meal on the Saturday night. The main Ride was on Saturday and we took off for Charlotte Pass in the morning after buying more raffle tickets (1st prize a Fireblade to be drawn Nov 17th). It was fresh up there with snow on the ground in places affording more photo opportunities, but a bacon and egg roll and coffee made it all good. After that Mick and Matthew went shopping in Jindabyne for a meat biased home cooked meal, while Sam and I headed back to Thredbo for a test ride on a CBR 500 R. These bikes have had excellent reviews and had Sam reminiscing about Black Bombers, but none of the cool dudes running the Honda test rides seemed to have heard of them. I found the bike excessively refined, a bit like riding a sewing machine, and in light of the reviews I had read was seriously underwhelmed. It did however drive home the truth of the adage about horses for courses, and of the importance of making one’s own assessment ( Sam says of course it would be compared to Roger's Guzzi!)
RIDE REPORT : SNOWY RIDE — NOVEMBER 1ST—3RD 2013 RIDE LEADER : ROGER FOOT RIDE REPORT : ROGER FOOT Jeff joined us for dinner on Saturday night but had to head back to Melbourne for family commitments on Sunday. The rest of us took The Barry Way to Dalgety where Sam was disappointed to hear that the pub no longer promoted a dangerous sounding game involving belting nails into a log, but reminisced with the publican about the night a local relieved him and his mates of a small fortune at darts. Then via the back roads of the Monaro to Cooma for lunch in an alternative café (I’d give the lentil burger a miss next time!). Then on to Eucumbene Dam where other extreme winds encouraged us to take the low road behind the dam wall for the return. Some exceedingly fast roads led back to the Jindabyne Rd and we found ourselves further encouraged by a sudden drop in temperature and threatening clouds on the horizon, although fortunately a few spatters of rain was all we sustained before the clouds sailed over on gale force winds. Monday morning saw us on the road at 06.50 with the temperature falling to minus 3 and a few flakes of snow on the way down to Tom Groggin. We took the Murray River Road via Walwa back to Lake Hume which had Mick reminiscing about the old race track behind the dam wall. After a very long ride we stopped for a welcome lunch in Yackandandah, actually breakfast because we arrived a few minutes before the appointed time for the lunch menu! We all rode on to Oxley where the others headed off to Whitfield for the return trip, while I elected the more direct Hume route. Talk about boring! I’ll take the long road next time. The weekend was a great success with the opportunity to ride some “made for bikes” roads in convivial company, and we were extremely fortunate to be blessed with good weather throughout. Any takers for next year?
Social Events The Melbourne Branch hosts one informal Social Nights during the course of each month. The social night is held on the 3rd Friday of the month at the Tower Hotel at 686 Burwood Road (Cnr Camberwell Rd) Hawthorn East. from around 7pm. The Tower Hotel provides a bistro style meal of more than adequate proportions including seafood that is not expensive. The wine list is fairly comprehensive and the normal range of beer, soft drinks and spirits is available at reasonable prices. What makes these nights special is the camaraderie and friendship enjoyed by all who attend with much laughter and frivolity emanating from the various groups and tables. For new chums and first timers, introductions are made in the normal Ulyssian manner which ensures that nobody is left standing on the outer and everyone is made to feel welcome. These nights are often filled with the usual mirth-filled talk about motorbikes and bike trips, travel in general, philosophy, geography and the usual odd joke etc. Someone always seems to have an Australian Road Atlas which is oft referred to and it is heartening to note that some members don't mind a little embellishment to make their story more interesting. One should never let the facts stand in the way of delivering a good punch line or yarn! These nights are not to be missed so pencil them into your social calendar and come along and enjoy
