The 2012 IEEE Multiconference on Systems and Control

T

he 2012 IEEE Multiconference on Systems and Control (MSC) was held on October 3–5, 2012 at Dubrovnik Palace Hotel conference center in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The conference was a joint event, comprising the International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC) and the Conference on Control Applications (CCA).

Technical program MSC 2012 was the first conference in Croatia sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS). In response to

the call for papers, 375 contributed and invited session papers from 47 countries on six continents were received. After a thorough and in-depth peer-review process, Program Chairs Ji Feng Zhang and Eric Rogers created a technical program with a total of 282 papers (three invited and 40 regular CCA sessions, one invited and six regular ISIC sessions, four plenary sessions, and one tutorial session). The preconference day, October 2, was dedicated to workshops. The technical workshops were on:

a large number of attendants. The students and teachers had an excellent opportunity for obtaining hands-on experience on the robotics and control equipment provided by the Center for Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) and the Laboratory for Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems (LARICS), both of which are affiliated with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb. Four plenary talks on the state-ofthe-art research topics were delivered: »» “Control of Molecular Purity, Crystal Structure, and Particle Size Distribution in Pharmaceutical Crystallization” by Richard D. Braatz »» “Bioinspired Flying Robots” by Dario Floreano »» “Adaptive Learning Structures for Real-Time Optimal Control

and Graphical Games” by Frank L. Lewis »» “Predicting Epileptic Episodes? A Systems and Information Theoretic Approach” by Iven Mareels.

Social Program and Awards It is well known that the organization of a conference is not possible without the help of student volunteers. MSC 2012 was no exception, and the enormous effort and enthusiasm that our young colleagues placed into the organizational activities were irreplaceable. Their initiative in organization of the students’ informal dinner that took place in the Old City of Dubrovnik, was accepted warmly by the MSC 2012 student participants. The conference organizing committee is obliged to all of them. The conference participants, many of whom brought their families, enjoyed the conference banquet that

took place at the conference venue. The banquet program included a set of folk dances from the Dubrovnik region, performed by the local dance group, and folk music, performed by the group Kase from Dubrovnik. Two awards were presented during the banquet program. Prof. Graziano Chesi, who was the Best Student Paper Award (BSPA) chair, announced the four finalists, Waqqas Ahmad, Natalia Amelina, Gian Antonio Susto, and Kwang-Ki Kim. Based on the evaluation of the BSPA committee, the recipient of the Best Student Paper Award was Gian Antonio Susto for the paper, “Least Angle Regression for Semiconductor Manufacturing Modeling,” coauthored by Gian Antonio Susto and Alessandro Beghi. The second laureate was Prof. Richard D. Braatz who received the (continued on p. 91)
