The Hunchback of Notre-Dame 5 a Djali b Sachette c Phoebus d Fleur-de-Lys e Frollo f Esmeralda 6 Pierre and the gypsies are worried because they haven’t seen Esmeralda. She’s in Tournell, a prison for criminals because people say she’s a witch. Madame Faloudel, the owner of a hotel, says Esmeralda killed Phoebus with a knife. She also saw a man in black drop from the window into the river. She ran upstairs with the King’s Guard and saw Esmeralda with her clothes half off. She thought Esmeralda worked together with the man that she saw, who was a sorcerer. Esmeralda said she didn’t kill Phoebus, so the Judge decided she needed torture. The pain was terrible so she finally confessed she did it. Frollo visited her and told her that his love for her was terrible for him, that’s why he killed Phoebus. Esmeralda said he was the murderer.
