VIBRANT HISTORY AND ANIMATED PRESENT Since its very beginning in the premier league: the Zollverein Coal Mine was put into operation in the pioneering days of the Ruhr area and grew to be the most modern and most efficient colliery worldwide – and the ‘marvel of rationalisation’. Especially the architecture was absolutely new and spectacular: designed as if made of one piece, objective, functional and highly aesthetic. Culmination was reached in 2001: Zollverein became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and subsequently a symbol of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 and the new Ruhr Metropolis. Discover the Zollverein Wold Heritage Site with its many facets with all your senses: experience the authentically preserved path of coal along the Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN and visit the Ruhr Museum to get to know the unique history, culture and nature of this dynamic region.

EXPERIENCE COAL: THE DENKMALPFAD ZOLLVEREIN

®

The roots of the Zollverein Coal Mine reach back to the beginnings of the Ruhr area. The once rural region became the transshipment point for coal and steel, and Zollverein was a pioneer in terms of technology, efficiency and performance ability. The Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN ®, the authentically preserved technical facilities of the Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant make the industrial past tangible – a real adventure for visitors. The smell of coal and iron is in the air, and time seems to have come to a standstill – as if the miners just left work for the day.

‘Night Shift at Shaft XII’ On tour with helmet and lunch box Equipped with helmet and lunch box, the participants do a ‘third shift’ in the evening. During the tour they get to know the former places of work and learn, for example, how to change reels. Afterwards, the tour is continued in the ‘Butterzeit!’ Bistro, where the evening ends after the traditional miners’ break with bread and butter. Duration: 3 hours / basic price: 200 Euros [plus food]

From the coal extraction to coking, the first part of the heavy industrial production chain is fully comprehensible at Zollverein. This is unique in all of Europe. At the same time, the visitors obtain a very close understanding of the working world and living environment of miners and coking plant workers.

‘Through Coke Oven and Hot Alley’ The path of coal at the coking plant from delivery to the coking process The tour of the once largest coking plant in Europe offers insights into the hard work once carried out here, which was characterised by noise, heat and dust - the permanent companions of coking plant workers. Passing by seemingly endless coke oven batteries or the pusher-machine track now filled with water, which is turned into an ice rink in winter, the World Heritage Site is finally at the participants’ feet: from the rooftop of the mixing plant, they enjoy views across the region and the surrounding cities. Duration: 2 hours / price: 100 Euros Tour conducted by a former coking plant worker First-hand information on everyday work at the Coking Plant A former coking plant worker guides visitors through his former job location; at authentic locations he explains how 11,000 tons of coal were refined into coke every day. Over a final glass of water, beer or wine, he tells stories and anecdotes about the technical monument. Duration: 3 hours / price: 150 Euros Art tour Artists and their artworks at Zollverein In the last years of operation, the Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant already attracted renowned artists. Some of them are permanently represented with their artworks or studios at today’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, among them sculptors like Ulrich Rückriem, Alf Lechner and Ansgar Nierhoff or the artist couple, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. Duration: 2 hours / price: 100 Euros

‘On Coal and Colliers’ The path of coal at Shaft XII from production to shipment Guided tour through the authentically preserved above-ground facilities and plants follows the path of coal at the Zollverein Coal Mine and conveys things to know about technology, the work process and the architecture of the once most efficient colliery of the world. Duration: 2 hours / price: 100 Euros ‘Foreman’s Tour with Pit Stories’ A former foreman presents his pit On shift with a former Zollverein miner: as part of a guided tour through the coal mine, a miner provides very personal insights into his former everyday work routines. Subsequently, he tells a few ‘yarns’ in a comfortable atmosphere. Duration: 3 hours / price: 150 Euros

TURBULENT AND MOVING HISTORY: THE RUHR MUSEUM Women in the Ruhr area Whether abbess, entrepreneur or miner’s wife – women have always played an important role in the Ruhr area. During the guided tour, the participants learn how strongly they have characterised the region. Duration: 1 hour / price: 70 Euros plus admission fee

The Ruhr Museum tells the history of one of the largest conurbations in Europe. At home in one of the most exceptional buildings, the elaborately converted Coal Washery, the Ruhr Museum considers itself as the ‘memory and shop window of the Ruhr Metropolis’. The museum, which was opened in 2010, highlights the entire natural and cultural history of the mining district – from the formation of coal 300 million years ago to the current structural change. An exhibition area of about 5,000 square metres combines 6,000 exhibits on history, natural history, archaeology, and photography. Exciting temporary exhibitions arouse supra-regional attention.

Multi-media presentation: the Portal of Industrial Heritage The Portal of Industrial Heritage tangibly illustrates the change of the region. Visitors get to know the impressive monuments of the heavy industry at the rivers Rhine, Ruhr and Emscher regarding their former and current use and experience a fascinating arc of suspense spanning from the industrial past to today’s dynamic reality.

GUIDED TOURS The available guided tours of the permanent exhibition in the Ruhr Museum include different themes and are tailored to the interests of visitors including all age groups.

The tour through the exhibition levels leads from the top to the ground floor – just like the ‘black gold’ when it was dressed and processed in the Coal Washery in bygone days. Starting in the spectacular internal staircase designed by architect Rem Koolhaas, the visitor initially explores the present and then gradually discloses the past. Industrial history of the Ruhr area in five acts Part of the comprehensive permanent exhibition is dedicated to the dramatic process of industrialisation in the Ruhr area. The participants of the guided tour experience the development from the early stages of mining at the river Ruhr to the peak stage of industrialisation as from 1870 through to the coal and steel crisis and the subsequent structural change since the 1960s. ART, CULTURE AND DESIGN WAIT TO BE EXPERIENCED Please trespass: what was once a ‘forbidden city’, a place where the noise of machines dictated the rhythm, art and culture now set the tune. Delicate artistic craftwork is created where miners once repaired heavy tools and machinery. And where the workers met at the start of their shift, visionary dance performances now take the stage by storm. Design also takes possession of the giants of the heavy industry: the Red Dot Design Museum features the acclaimed designs of our days. Art, culture and design are the driving force for the Zollverein World Heritage Site!

EXPERIENCE ART, CULTURE AND DESIGN VISIONARY IDEAS COME UPON CLASSIC DESIGN Red Dot Design Museum The Red Dot Design Museum is based in the former boiler house at Shaft XII. With more than 2,000 exhibits, it presents the worldwide largest collection of contemporary design. In the interiors, which were redesigned by Norman Foster, glass and concrete merge with old plumbing and steel stairs to form a breath-taking, 4,000-square metre stage: current consumer goods and lifestyle objects from all over the world make the museum an attraction for design and architecture lovers from Germany and abroad. All exhibited products were awarded the ‘Red Dot’, an internationally renowned quality seal.

SANAA Building Since its construction in 2006, the SANAA Building has been considered to be an architectural masterpiece with a groundbreaking energy concept. The architects from SANAA, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, regard the building as one of their most significant designs. Since January 2010, the SANAA Building has been used by the Folkwang University of the Arts, but is also available for letting. The 34-metre high structure has a base area of 35 by 35 metres. The unique internal structure is composed of five levels each with a different ceiling height. The 134 window openings seem to be arbitrarily arranged, but they are exactly attuned to the lighting situation in the interior and resemble picture frames, which let the surroundings appear like momentary photographs. Architecture tours provide special insights

Granite Sculptures by sculptor Ulrich Rückriem Shortly after the closing of the Zollverein Coal Mine, renowned sculptor Ulrich Rückriem literally laid the foundation stone for art: in 1992, he set up a monumental stone sculpture at the Zollverein spoil tip – the ‘Castell’ – which consists of 24 man-high blocks of granite making reference to human interventions in nature. Nature has long reclaimed this space at the spoil tip and produced an industrial forest, which invites to a discovery tour along a path leading past further sculptures by Rückriem which act as milestones.

SOUND EXPERIENCE FROM CLASSICAL MUSIC TO JAZZ AND POP Ruhrtriennale The Zollverein World Heritage Site has been a fixed performance venue of this international cultural festival since 2002. Unforgotten productions in the mixing plant, groundbreaking concert experiences and theatre performances in the salt store or at PACT Zollverein enrich the cultural diversity of the World Heritage Site as well as other industrial cultural places in the Ruhr area.

The closing of the coal mine and coking plant also silenced the ambient noise of the industrial facilities. However, the silence in the partly cathedral-like halls and interiors did not last for long and quickly made way for new sounds and productions: concerts of classical and electronic music, pop or jazz as well as dance and theatre performances now unfold their very individual magic at Zollverein.

ExtraSchicht When the whole Ruhr area is illuminated for one night and hundreds of thousands turn night into day, then it’s the time of ExtraSchicht, the night of industrial heritage. The industrial monuments of the region present themselves with a programme ‘ExtraOrdinaire’ and attract visitors to more than 100 events. Always involved and right in the middle of it at all times is the Zollverein World Heritage Site, which provides a gorgeous (mid-)summer night ambience with music, dance, theatre, special guided tours, performances, and light installations.

ZOLLVEREIN® Concerts ZOLLVEREIN® Concerts advance to the border areas of jazz, pop, experimental and classical music: whichever genre and interpreter – the industrial charm of the venues makes every concert an impressive experience.

Where industrial heritage and the experience of nature merge, the contours may be blurred: Diving into the blue pool and coming back up in front of the coke oven battery!? The Zollverein playground opens up new perspectives and allures in all seasons: also in winter when the ice rink attracts tens of thousands to enter the ice in the rapture of colours created by the light installation. Hurl yourself into the Zollverein adventure!

ACTIVE AND RELAXED OUT AND ABOUT WITH ALL SENSES The Ring Promenade connects the different areas of the World Heritage Site as a course full of surprises. Along a stretch of 3.5 km, it surrounds the World Heritage Site and is a perfect path for cyclists, joggers and pedestrians. Past art stations, playing venues for children or relaxation zones in the densely vegetated ZOLLVEREIN ® Park, variety and diversity are its main characteristics. Those who have not brought a bike can rent one at the ‘Revierradstation’ bike hire station at Zollverein Shaft XII. And those who have got going after circumnavigating the World Heritage Site and have acquired a taste for industrial heritage, can set off for the ‘Zollvereinweg’ leading to the Erzbahn railway line in the direction of the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum or the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen.

Phänomania Exhibition Here, everything revolves around hearing and seeing, smelling and touching, testing and experimenting, in short: the activation of our senses. The Phänomania Exhibition combines the experience-based educational stations of artist and philosopher Hugo Kükelhaus (1900–1984) with other experimental stations: in the indoor and outdoor areas, visitors of all age groups are invited to experience weightlessness in a playful way, look into infinity or lose their balance on firm ground.

OPENING HOURS April to October daily 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. PRICES Price per bicycle starting from 9 Euros per day, 10 Euros reduction for groups of 10 people and more (registration is recommended) INFORMATION phone +49 208 8485720 / www.revierrad.de

Those who also want to learn about the architecture, history and present of the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ‘sight jogging tour’ is exactly the right thing: ranging from a leisurely pace with stops for beginners to a speedy sprint for well-exercised sportspeople as well as hiking and cycle tours. The participants experience the Zollverein World Heritage Site with all its facets – always accompanied by athletically and professionally qualified guides.

> Dates and information: www.sightjogging-im-ruhrgebiet.de or www.simply-out-tours.de Guided cycle tour by the Zollverein Bürger- and Verkehrsverein Meeting point and start is the bike hire station at the Zollverein World Heritage Site. From here, the tour runs, for example, past the famous twin pithead winding tower across the Coking Plant grounds and further through the former miners’ housing estate as well as the re-used shaft facilities, parks and gardens. With several stops along the route, the 16-km tour is also manageable for less trained cyclists. On the way, the participants listen to anecdotes and stories from a time when Zollverein was still in operation, and obtain information on the present of the Zollverein industrial-cultural landscape.

RevierRad Station You have a great choice ranging from the ‘classic’ 28-inch ‘city bike’ with 7-speed hub gear to children’s and trailer bikes through to recumbent and electric bicycles. Even bikes tailored to the needs of handicapped people are available: hand- or foot-operated tricycles as well as tandems and other special edition models are available for renting. Once the World Heritage Site has been explored, the Route of Industrial Heritage offers additional possibilities for exploring the region. The hired bikes can be easily returned at more than 20 stations

22

The ‘Zollvereinweg’ starts at the old signal tower located opposite the SANAA Building. Further on it changes into the multifaceted Emscher Park cycle path, which connects the Zollverein World Heritage Site with, amongst other locations, the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum.

Guided Nature Tours The industrial nature, which flourishes and blossoms on the barren ground of the former industrial locations of Zollverein, is a multicultural group of plants and animals. Exotic plants have mixed with indigenous pioneering plants, which were already introduced during the time of operation – for example when transporting mine timber. Rare animal species also find a new habitat at the former spoil tips. Wild herbs like evening primrose and St. John’s wort can be found here, as well as rare bats, kestrels and natterjack toads. Experts lead the way through the new ‘wilderness’, call attention to different exotic species and invite to a discovery tour. > Further information:: www.nabu-im-ruhrgebiet.de or www.emscherlandschaftspark.dea

The former compressor hall, which looks back upon five decades of industrial history, is still easy to recognise: the rough charm of unrendered walls and the 6-metre high concrete columns contribute to the fact that the ‘Der Feinschmecker’ magazine declared the CASINO Zollverein as ‘the most spectacular restaurant location in the Ruhr area’ and the Pro7/ Galileo TV programme ranks it among the ‘ten most spectacular restaurants of the world’. Bar, lounge and restaurant harmoniously integrate into the austere industrial interior and make the stay an all-round sensual pleasure. The New World Cuisine combines ingredients from all over the world with regional produce: sword fish tartar with avocado and mango, rabbit stew with pine nuts and white chocolate tart with marinated tangerines for desert.

1 The Ruhr area and its people – yesterday and today Immerse into the memory and shop window of the Ruhr Metropolis: in the Ruhr Museum, visitors experience the history of one of the largest conurbations in Europe. It highlights the entire natural and cultural history of the Ruhr area and relates its myths, phenomena and perspectives. Then the visitors continue to the Portal of Industrial Heritage: multi-media installations and innovative information points impressively stage the monuments of the industrial era. At a sweeping pace, the subsequent film ‘RUHR 360°’ presents the Ruhr area and the enormous diversity of its everyday facets and gives non-local guests as well as ‘indigenous’ people from the Ruhr area a say. A fabulous conclusion of this tour is the view from the visitor platform on top of the Coal Washery. Good weather provided, the rooftop affords views across almost the entire western Ruhr area. Find out about industrial history and culture Along the Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN ® at Shaft XII, the visitors follow the path of coal from extraction to shipment. The guided tour ‘On Coal and Miners’ provides exciting information on the technology and work routines at the once most efficient coal mine of the world and conveys facts worth knowing about the architecture and Zollverein’s multifaceted process of change from a coal mine into a modern location for creative industries. However, the Zollverein cultural landscape is more than Shaft XII, Shaft 1/2/8 and the Coking Plant. This is revealed during the subsequent cycle tour – a 38-km round trip leading through workers’ housing estates, coal mines and spoil tips in the periphery of the Zollverein premises comprising the entire industrial cultural landscape. Other likely destinations for cycle tours starting from Zollverein are the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum, Essen’s southern districts or the Gasometer in Oberhausen.

SANAA Building makes an impact with views from the interior to the exterior. The 134 square windows appear like picture frames for the outward views, thus forming a photo gallery of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today an event location and home of the Folkwang University of the Arts, it is one of the few newly constructed buildings at the Zollverein site. Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the founders of the Tokyo-based architectural firm SANAA and winners of the 2010 Pritzker Prize, designed this building.

THE PACKAGE COULD INCLUDE: // Visit to the Red Dot Design Museum // Lunch in the CASINO Zollverein // Guided tour of the SANAA Building (1 hour)

4 THE PACKAGE COULD INCLUDE: // Art tour (duration: 2 hours) // Visit to ‘The Palace of Projects’ // Dinner in the CASINO Zollverein

6 New sounds in historic halls ‘Change through culture – Culture through change’ was the theme of the European Capital of Culture Year RUHR.2010. The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site has already signified this motto since the beginning of the 1990s. The impressive industrial architecture of the world’s once largest and still beautiful coal mine is perfectly suited as an impressive stage area for concerts, but it is also an experience in itself. Prior to a concert, the guests can feel the special atmosphere of this place during a guided tour.

THE PACKAGE COULD INCLUDE: // Short guided tour of the Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN ® (duration: 1 hour), only available as group booking // Snack or dinner in one of the restaurants or bistros on site // V isit to a performance from the ZOLLVEREIN® Concerts series Outstanding design meets Far Eastern lightness In this place where about 2,000 exhibits provide an overview of current trends in product design and the quality of good design, exhibits and building enter into an impressive symbiosis: in the interior of the former boiler house, which was converted by architect Norman Foster, old piping and machine elements merge with concrete and glass to form a unique stage for the products and design achievements from all over the world. The Red Dot Design Museum impresses with its interiors and products having been awarded the ‘Red Dot’, the distinction of the worldwide most significant design competition, whereas the

Plant in the evening, when the light installation by Jonathan Speirs and Mark Major transforms it into a synthesis of the arts. At nightfall, the participants can observe how the coke production facilities as well as the adjoining boulevard are immersed in red and blue light. The culmination: dinner in the atmospheric ambience of CASINO Zollverein.

Experience contemporary art at the UNESCO World Heritage Site As soon as the Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant were shut down, art started to take possession of the Zollverein grounds: the outdoor area mesmerises with artworks by the contemporary sculptors Ulrich Rückriem, Ansgar Nierhoff or Alf Lechner, and the former industrial halls, too, accommodate impressive spatial installations. Participants of a tour visiting ‘LA PRIMAVERA’, an art project by Maria Nordman, make an intense sensory experience, and in the former salt store at the Coking Plant, the total installation ‘The Palace of Projects’ by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov with 65 projects on the shaping of a better world waits to be discovered. Equally inspiring is a visit to the Coking

Ice Age at Zollverein During the ‘Through Coke Oven and Hot Alley’ tour at the Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN®, the participants initially get to know the once largest coking plant in Europe with is exceptional halls, machines and routes. They obtain an authentic impression of the hard work characterised by noise and heat. After a refreshment in ‘die kokerei’ Café & Restaurant, the visitors can enjoy the beautiful side of winter: skating artists and ice skaters-to-be pirouette across the ZOLLVEREIN® Ice Rink, dash up and down the ice or dare first cautious steps on the slippery surface. Curling is an alternative, which is very popular with groups.

THE PACKAGE COULD INCLUDE: // Industrial history tour of the Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN® ‘Through Coke Oven and Hot Alley’ (duration: 2 hours) // Curling with instructions incl. equipment // Hot meal in ‘die kokerei’ Café and Restaurant

Museum Folkwang When Museum Folkwang was established in 1902, it was the first museum for contemporary art in Europe. Since 2010, parts of the collection and many highly respected temporary exhibitions have been presented in the congenial new building by British architect David Chipperfield. www.museum-folkwang.de

ESSEN AND ITS ENVIRONS OFFER PLACES TO EXPLORE

Villa Hügel Villa Hügel, constructed in 1873 by Alfred Krupp, is situated in a 28-hectare park with a fantastic view of Lake Baldeneysee. The former residence and stately place for representation of the Krupp industrialist family as well as the ‘Small House’ with the newly laid out ‘Krupp Historical Exhibition’ are open to visitors. The so-called ‘main house’ regularly serves as a venue for major art exhibitions and concerts. www.villahuegel.de

Baldeneysee The largest of the six Ruhr reservoirs is a popular water sports paradise and nearby recreational area for the entire region. Whilst yachtsmen and canoeists get their money’s worth, strollers, cyclists, inline skaters, and nature lovers enjoy the 15-km circular route around the lake. On the way, numerous cafés, restaurant destinations and the fine sandy ‘Beach Baldeney’ invite to stop and stay for a little while. www.baldeneysee.de

Philharmonie Essen The Philharmonie Essen, the largest concert hall in the Ruhr area, features top-class musicians, among them soloist like Anne-Sophie Mutter, Gabriela Montero and Lang Lang or conductors like Gustavo Dudamel and Simon Rattle as well as different ensembles including the Alban Berg Quartett and the Berliner Philharmoniker. The top-class venue for classical music as well as contemporary music genres is located at the Essen Stadtgarten in immediate proximity of the Aalto-Theater, Essen’s opera house. www.philharmonie-essen.de

In close contact with the Ruhr Metropolis: where the heart of Europe’s heavy industry was beating, a broad cultural diversity now puts forward fascinating sights. Even in terms of leisure activities and the experience of nature, the City of Essen and the region leave nothing to be desired and arouse the curiosity for a visit. Allow yourself to be surprised and discover the surroundings of the Zollverein World Heritage Site!

Margarethenhöhe Estate The company housing estate named after the benefactress, Margarethe Krupp, was constructed between 1909 and 1920. It was the first garden suburb in Germany. Until today it is regarded as the prototype of resident-friendly housing, and the almost 1,000 buildings still radiate a strong appeal, because in this architecture ensemble characterised by curved gables, pergolas, oriels, wooden window shutters, and stone plinths, hardly any two houses are alike. A sample flat set up by the Ruhr Museum provides an insight into this exemplary way of construction and features an exhibition on the history and architecture of the estate. www.essen-margarethenhoehe.de

Essen Cathedral and Cathedral Treasury Chamber With more than 250 sacred devices and artworks dating from the period between the 9th and 18th century, the Essen Cathedral Treasury Chamber accommodates one of Europe’s most significant church treasures. The collection of artworks, primarily gold and silver works, but also ivory carvings, sculptures, and manuscripts, includes the oldest preserved free-standing Madonna figure of Occidental art: the Golden Madonna dating from the 10th century. www.domschatz-essen.de

Gasometer Oberhausen Europe’s largest disc-type gas holder is more than an impressive evidence of the heavy industry and art of engineering. The exciting interior is regularly used to stage exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances and internationally respected art projects, such as most recently the largest yet created interior sculpture of the world, the ‘Big Air Package’ by Christo. Via a lift in the interior and a second one positioned on the outside, visitors reach the rooftop of the 117-metre high industrial monument which affords a panoramic view across the entire western Ruhr area. www.gasometer.de
