f it’s immobile, impractical, illegal or just ill, Wayne John wants it. Your old car that is. The Car Dump Company specialises in ridding the Waikato and King Country of cars no-one else wants. Operating from his Waipa Towing building in Bruce Berquist Drive, The Car Dump Company is a free service that picks up those cars that have no further use. Mr John says it is surprising how many vehicles are just lying around when no-one really wants them for anything. He says in relative terms it is more economical for some people to buy another roadworthy car than to try and fix one up.
If you take pride in your vehicle or you wish to enhance the selling or trade in value of your car give Darin or David a call for a no-obligation free quote.

Anyone wanting a good deal on used tyres should look out for his monthly tyre sale. Mr John says he has a huge range of hundreds of tyres. Often the cars have no value for sale or for parts, so they end up messing up properties, or worse, are dumped for someone else to clean up. He says in these cases he can save councils money by disposing of the car for nothing. In his experience cars left for any length of time are wrecked or burnt-out, making disposal more expensive. In most cases The Car Dump Company will pick up a car for free, bring it back to their workshop where it is disposed of. The company has two specialist recovery vehicles, both with a sliding deck so a vehicle can be winched onto the tray, and one with a Hi-ab. Mr John says the Hi-ab gives him the

New instruments, door trims and seat fabrics complete the look. Other improvements include a fully automatic air conditioning system, an illuminated vanity mirror and revised audio switchgear. Noise levels have been reduced with improved insulation to reduce engine, wind and road noise. The changes include new dash insulators, body damping sheets and seals with Ford claiming noise levels inside the cabin are 3-4 decibels lower at cruising speed. Escape’s braking performance has been upgraded with the adoption of four-wheel disc brakes - replacing the previous model’s front disc/rear drum setup _ and larger front brake rotors. In fact Fairview Motors demonstration models are going out the door more quickly than this journalist can get to drive one. So this is actually what other people have said about this obviously popular new model. Two models of the new escape are on offer, the entry level 2.3-litre four-cylinder XLT and the XLT Sport V6. The 2.3-litre engine features variable valve timing to achieve a broader torque curve and lower exhaust emissions, plus an electronic throttle system. Power and torque remain about the same (109kW and 199Nm), but the torque is available from further down the range. The 3.0-litre V6 engine is unchanged with 152kW at 6000rpm, with peak torque of 276Nm available at 4750rpm but the powertrain gains a new lock-up torque converter and revised four-speed

Rally of NZ returns to ‘the creek’ P
ropecia Rally New Zealand and Mystery Creek Events Centre have confirmed a partnership agreement for Mystery Creek Events Centre to be Rally Headquarters for New Zealand’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship in November this year. Mystery Creek Events Centre has contributed integral support in order to secure the event for the Hamilton region. “We are very pleased that we are able to work with Mystery Creek Events Centre to move the event to the next level,” says Rally of New Zealand general manager Paul Mallard. “Mystery Creek Events Centre has a great entertainment programme for the event with the centerpiece being the special stage run around the grounds twice during the event. “This will be the first time that New Zealand and international rally fans will be able to experience a one stop rally experience in this country. This is another important event for the community’s benefit,” says development and marketing manager Nicola Greenwell. “As the most televised sport in the world, this event will bring Hamilton to the homes of millions worldwide.” Two special stages and the indoor service park will be held at Mystery Creek Events Centre. The special stages will take place over a 3.1km course including water splash and jump that has been purpose-built to provide spectators with their best-ever view of world-class competitors in full flight. Spectators will also enjoy improved facilities at the completely under cover service park, including grandstands that will provide a birds-eye view of frantic rebuilds and last minute performance adjustments. The action will continue with a carnival atmosphere and entertainment planned for before and after the stages. Bands, burnouts, fireworks, rides and stalls will thrill crowds and give the event wider
appeal than ever before with a range of corporate groups. into Mystery Creek Events Centre 17 options available for family, friends and The Rally of New Zealand will drive - 19 November 2006.
Kiwi at the helm ally NZ chairman Morrie Chandler has been elected President of the World Rally Championship Commission. He held the position in an interim role for some months and is honoured that his international colleagues on the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have seen fit to elect him to this position. Mr Chandler credits his appointment to the continuing volunteer efforts of the motorsport fraternity in New Zealand, who have created an environment that has allowed him to achieve to this level. “I am immensely proud to be elected as President of the body in charge of World Championship Rallying and for the support from Max Mosley the President of the FIA. I couldn’t have done so without the great support of many people in the Rally NZ organisation over many years. You don’t rise to this level as an individual without your own country’s event gaining great respect worldwide.” He is quick to warn however that New Zealand can not afford to be complacent, and must do better than it has in the past if it seeks to continue beyond 2007, as a round of the WRC. “The competition for inclusion in the WRC is now more intense than it ever has been. I have seen first hand the efforts made by other countries to gain inclusion and continue to be amazed by the level of cooperation and support from governments and businesses in those countries.” Rally New Zealand is the only annual world status event to be hosted in New Zealand.

he boys at Peter Glidden Honda love nothing better than selling or servicing bikes - except riding them. The Honda dealership specialises in off-road Hondas, two and four wheel farm bikes, two and four wheel off-road racers and even nowheel jet skis. Salesman Shane Blackwell and workshop foreman Mark Scobie are great ambassadors of the Honda marque, and great examples of motorsport enthusiasts. Both have been riding since the age of 11, predominantly on a Honda. They now compete in Hare Scramble and Trail events on the latest generation Honda CRF250X and CRF450X respectively. They say these four stroke machines are competitive, at the leading edge of off-road technology and reliable. While their super-competitive days are over, Blackwell and Scobie want to be at or near the front every time they race. Blackwell had a 3rd New Zealand rank as a junior, a long time ago now he recalls. But like many of their mates, the pair are at every reasonably close event, whether it is the likes of the Hawkes Bay Six Hour or Raglan Rocks Four Hour or one of the shorter trail ride events. They share a passion with hundreds of other Kiwis, meeting lots of like minded people, enjoying good so-

STUART LAW LTD power is smooth and quiet is good, this Monaro was just a little bit brutal, with an exhaust note to match. Admittedly the Subaru at the lights next to me during my exhaustive test drive was noisier than me, but mine sounded better. I also knew I could blow him off, so I didn’t even bother to try. The GTO comes with the American sourced 5.7litre V8 packing 255kW. In old school terms that is a 350ci Chevy with about 345hp. The four speed auto, big wheels and tread and traction control work pretty well at getting that power onto the road.
I wouldn’t suggest turning the traction control off, especially in the wet, because everything is pretty responsive in a GTO. And you know how the media like to let everyone know when an expensive car has been confiscated under the ‘boy racer act’. Holden added beefed up suspension, brakes and body strength to cope with the power and improve handling. It seems to work. The red beast comes with a matching red and black leather interior. Now it is a coupe, so despite its big car heritage, don’t expect too much back
seat room. The back is lovely, with a pair of bucket seats, centre console, air conditioning ducts etc - but it is for short people who don’t demand much head or leg room. Imagine instead the GTO with just you and your partner, a suitcase in the ample boot, nice big sounding sound system playing your favourite driving CD eating up the distance between here and your favourite weekend getaway place. Of course you don’t want the stereo too loud, because you need to hear the growl of the exhaust to remind you of the beast within.

By Dean Taylor n the 1960’s Holden built one of its iconic cars by making a coupe based on its family sedan. The Monaro was an instant hit, and those early models became sought after classics. This century Holden did it again, making a two door Monaro based on the Commodore. Options such as the HSV packages made it an instant hit. So this year they stopped making them. Now if you want a modern coupe classic you need to buy one second-hand - just like the GTO on the yard at TASS. I must admit I was surprised to see it on their yard, sitting there looking all impressive beside the usual 4WD, family sedans and European imports that are their mainstay. But then I was offered a BMW Z3 as my other test drive option, so there you go. The bright red 2002 Coupe GTO looks fast sitting still, even on a grey, wet winter’s day. So what do you get for just under $43,000? For a start you get the ability to turn heads. Monaros stand out. And in a world where

Te Awamutu Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Group (TAMVEG) held a small display at the F.E.I. AA helping make young drivers he AA has launched a new Defensive Driving Course to empower young New Zealanders with safe driving skills and knowledge. AA Driving Training Manager Karen Dickson says “the innovative new driver training course has been designed with the different learning styles of students in mind.” “We have introduced a new DVD driving simulator and overhauled the workbooks used in the four classroom sessions, as well as including a new hands-on learning session in a

vehicle.” Each year 20,000 young drivers participate in AA Defensive Driving Courses. Since 1989, more than 250,000 drivers have completed the course and improved their road safety skills. “Last year, young drivers were involved in 142 fatal traffic crashes in New Zealand. In 83% of those crashes it was a driver aged between 15 and 24 years who was responsible for the fatal accident. That’s hugely alarming to the authorities and public.
The AA’s new Defensive Driving Course aims to improve the driving skills of our younger drivers and to help keep them safe on our roads,” says Ms Dickson. In addition to launching a new Defensive Driving Course, the AA is working closely with the Ministry of Transport, NZ Police, ACC and Land Transport New Zealand on policies to improve the safety of young New Zealand drivers. Further information about the new AA Defensive Driving Course is available by phoning 0800 223 748.

ack in the day all our cars were rear wheel drive, unless you had a Mini, or one of their big English brothers. We thought front wheel drive was a bit weird, and you had to go to a special school to learn to drive them. Now front wheel drive is the norm, and if you want something else you generally have to go big, 4WD or European. Or you could try and buy an older model built before the mass changeover took place - but you still have a problem - because young guys like Ryan Gibbs have bought them all. Ryan has always been into cars - he blames his Dad Russell who used to rally in the likes of the iconic Ford Escort. His cousins were all into cars as well, so he spent a lot of time hanging around sheds tinkering with motors. His first car was a Ford Telstar, then he got a sportier Daihatsu Charade - then about three years ago purchased his ‘pride and joy’ - a two litre 1994 Nissan Sylvia, or in the new lingo, a ‘94 S14 SR20DET. It came with the 17”
B
wheels and a beefed up exhaust. Ryan bought the car for its looks, but a chance to go drifting fuelled a new passion. Apart from the fact Ryan blew his engine at the closed Pukekohe drift session, he was hooked. He made the decision to rebuild the Nissan with drifting in mind - his first car build. Ryan took the twin cam engine apart, purchased some special parts mostly directly from America - and then had it rebuilt. The power plant now boasts forged pistons, metal head gasket, new bearings and seals, oversized sump, relocated oil filter, pod air filter and a stronger clutch. Ryan estimates the engine is now good for 170kW, but he hasn’t finished yet and is aiming for 200kW. An oil cooler and thicker aluminium radiator will be added to give the engine maximum protection for race conditions. The car already has coil-overs, but before the Sylvia can be drifted, it will need more suspension modifications, plus a roll cage, which will help strengthen the body and a harness.
Ryan has removed the rear seat and sealed the boot cavity with aluminium plate to remove some weight and it has a special handbrake system. He also plans to install two way limited slip differential, essential for drifting. Ryan has made sure his car has stayed road legal, getting it certified as he progresses. He plans to go all the way to D1 - the sport born in Japan that is getting attention around the world. Three separate TV channels show New Zealand drift meets, so Ryan is hoping this exposure will help him get sponsorship. Drifting is a points based competition, not a race. The idea is to look out of control, but be completely in control. Going sideways, making smoke from both back wheels and getting close to the other car without crashing all earn top points. Ryan has tried his hand at a few open days at Pukekohe and Taupo, and studies DVD’s from top drivers in preparation for when he is able to race.
