Join Arthur and his friends as he learns some valuable lessons about being safe and staying healthy! In Episode One, Arthur’s Knee, Arthur learns about the importance of keeping your body safe. In Episode Two, Buster’s Breathless, Arthur and his friends find out what having asthma is all about. In Episode Three, The Lousy Week, lice are loose, and everyone in Arthur’s school learn how to protect themselves from the itchy bugs!

Try the following activities with the vocabulary words to the right. Depending on the age and ability of your students, they may be able to complete multiple assignments. Pre-K - K: Ask your children to repeat the vocabulary words. Ask your children to draw a picture of 2-3 vocabulary words Ask your children what letter the vocabulary words start with. Ask your children to describe what each word means. “What is a . . .” Ask your children what their favorite word is For kindergarteners, ask your children to copy the words. 1-2:

Ask your students to copy the following words in alphabetical order, and to describe each of the words verbally. Practice spelling.

3-5:

Look up each word in a dictionary, and write down its definition. Write each word in a sentence, or write a paragraph using the words.

Print out the A-Z tips and paste each onto a different paper, creating a book of Summer Safety ideas. You can then draw a picture for each one.



Create your own A to Z tips for other times of the year. Add pictures!



Make a poster with one of you’re A-Z tips or one from the National Safety Council’s Web site. The National Safe Kids Campaigns has some posters you can look at as possible examples. When you are finished, the public library or the town hall might be interested in hanging them as reminders to others to stay safe.

Make a list of the 5 most important safety rules in your home or school. Draw a picture by each one of children following the rule or what might happen if they don’t follow the rule!



Make a map of your classroom / playground / home. Mark an “X” on the map in every place you see a safety item. Under the X write the name of the item.



Make “Safe Citizen” awards and hand them out to your friends when they are playing it safe! You may want to have a contest to see who can collect the most awards in a week!



Create a mural of how children can play safely in your school or community.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS ANSWER KEY: Episode 1: Arthur’s Knee 1. Arthur gets hurt when he goes to the dump to find an old tire and gets cut on a lima bean can. 2. Answers may vary but children should respond no. Arthur did not have permission to go and he knew his parents would not want him to. Have them think about why he allowed DW to go with him. (So she wouldn’t tell on him.)

3. DW had to decide whether to tell her mother about Arthur’s cut or not tattle. (Be sure the children know that it is not tattling when something important has happened!)

4. Answers will vary depending on how the child thinks. DW did convince Arthur to tell himself that he had broken the rules so either a yes or no answer is good.

If you get a cut you should tell someone about it. Have them clean it and if it needs to be covered, place a bandage on it. In some cases a tetanus shot is needed. Tetanus can live on many things but mainly on metal objects.

5. Your skin provides a protective barrier against germs and bacteria. When it is cut harmful germs can get in and make you sick.

Episode 2: Buster’s Breathless 1. DW gets covered with poison. 2. Buster learns he has asthma when he is reading old magazines. The dust irritates his lungs triggering an asthma attack. 3. At first Buster’s friends treat him very special and think that many things will “give him” asthma. Francine believes that she can “catch asthmas from Buster. 4. Buster lies about not having asthma anymore because he feels that the other children are treating him differently. He wants his friends to treat him the same way they did before he found out he had asthma. 5. Buster tells a story to the class about what it is like inside of his lungs. 6. Asthma is not contagious.

Episode 3: The Lousy Week 1. Head lice are microscopic bugs that live in human hair. 2. They spread through a hat and through personal contact. 3. They were all upset that the lice were there.
