This is a great novel from a writer who excels in research and storytelling. I enjoyed Paris even more than Sarum and London. The history of Paris springs to life in this sparkling epic portrait: a city of love and dreams, of saints and scholars, of splendour and terror. In two thousand years Paris, ‘sink of iniquity’, has seen it all.

Though the focus is on events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the reader becomes well aware of the history of other times. The commentary in the opening chapter shows the impact of the Romans, the Franks and the Vikings. Flashbacks, conversations and stories within stories blend into the narrative to create a vivid and wide-ranging account of Paris’s past.

Some historical events are particularly memorable: the French Revolution and the Paris Commune; the Great War; the Nazi Occupation and the French Resistance. The Parisians were familiar with tragedy and violence but they knew about glory and courage too. Fictional characters as well as real characters illustrate these qualities; the tale of four families across the centuries makes this novel very readable. These families are quite distinct: aristocracy, bourgeoisie, working class and revolutionary. Sometimes their paths meet in love and harmony but sometimes they cross in hatred and vengeance. Characterisation is brilliant; it is fascinating to see how personalities are shaped by religious conviction, political allegiance, social class, family history and the caprice of fate.

Paris is a city rich in art and culture as well as history. Architects, artists, engineers, novelists and poets have played an important part in a city famed for its beauty and vitality. Highlights for me were the glamour of the Belle Epoque, the 1924 Olympic Games and the construction of the Eiffel Tower; famous names included Chanel, Hemingway, Hugo, Monet and Zola. I admit that I am a Francophile; this wonderful book made me fall in love with Paris for a second time. Reviewed by: Jean Marshall - Hertfordshire
