PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION  DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION

Welcome to Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, a charming city with a distinctive atmosphere and which is definitely worth visiting. The Warsaw metropolis is located in the heart of Europe, at the meeting point of trade routes from the West to the East and from the North to the South of the continent. The history and atmosphere of this magnificent country is a fascinating combination of influences of Western and Eastern Europe, where tradition meets modernity. Warsaw will certainly enchant you. This is an invitation to discover this city full of contrasts, where historical monuments and modern architecture coexist on every street. Historical palaces and buildings and older architectural structures, destroyed during World War II, have been accurately reconstructed in such a way that it is impossible to differentiate between any of the original pre-war buildings and those rebuilt after the war. The urban structure of this city is set in open green spaces and municipal parks. Come and visit this vibrant European metropolis. Leave with unforgettable memories; for those who decide to stay a bit longer, Warsaw will certainly offer you many memorable experiences. The University is located in Rembertów, an administrative district of, Warsaw. This unique location of the University in the vicinity of green forests provides students and academic teachers with a comfortable, natural environment. Between 1939 and 1957 Rembertów was a separate town. Then it was incorporated as part of the district of Praga Południe. Between 1994 and 2002 it formed a separate commune of Warszawa-Rembertów. I n the 1940s it was the site of a prison operated first by the Nazis, followed by the Soviets. Under the communist regime military executions were carried out at this location. Rembertów covers 19,30 km² and as of 2004 had 21,893 inhabitants. It is sparsely populated; more than 30% of the district is covered by forests, including parts of the Kawęczyn Forest Reserve. Rembertów is home to the University of National Defence, established in 1947 as the Academy of General Staff (Akademia Sztabu Generalnego). If you are in Warsaw it is a must to see the Old Town - a cultural lounge of the capital. During the tourist season, it becomes a stage for concerts in the open air, drama performances and art galleries. Romantic backstreets sloping down to the river and stylish cafés with pleasant music playing in the background are perfect places for a break from sightseeing. The Old Town is also a place of interest for the enthusiasts of sacred art. After having suffered heavy war damages, the quarter was reconstructed with the fidelity that assured its position in the UNESCO list . The next phase in your itinerary should be a walk along the Royal Route – the most representative road in the city, linking the Royal Castle with the palaces in Łazienki and Wilanów. You will be enchanted with the the route, shaped by history, and the atmosphere of its palaces, churches, bourgeois tenements and seats of the government. Although a walk along the Royal Route takes only an hour, it is a journey through centuries and a lesson of history. An interesting point on the route is Wilanów and King Jan Sobieski III’s summer residence with lavishly embellished interiors. It is also worth taking a walk along the alleys of the Wilanów historical park. The Powązki Cemetery was founded in 1790, according to the design by D. Merlini – the court architect of king Stanislaw August Poniatowski. People from the King’s entourage and family are buried in the catacombs. Numerous historical tombs of artistic value have also been preserved. At the back of the catacombs is the Avenue of Merit, where the most prominent Poles are buried. Before World War II, Warsaw was the second city in Europe and the fourth city in the world as far as the number of Jewish inhabitants is concerned. About 400 000 Jews, nearly 30 per cent of the total population of the city, lived here. During the war the Nazis organized and later destroyed the Jewish Ghetto. The sites such as

the Jewish Cemetery, Nożyk Synagogue and Umschlagplatz - the site from where the Germans transported about 300 000 Jewish citizens to Treblinka Extermination Camp - commemorate the martyrdom of Jewish people. Housingquarters built after World War II make a different impression. In the period 1949-1956 a new style was imposed on Polish architects, i.e..socialist realism. It called for the conformity of the world’s image with Marxist ideas and the simplicity of form. Optimism, giving priority to subject matters such as manual labour, class struggle and working class movement were characteristic features of the style (i.e. Marszałkowska Housing District (MDM), the Palace of Culture and Science constructed in 1952).

- MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS

Warsaw’s cultural life is ever vibrant. Everyone can find something for himself in every month. For lovers of cinema and theatre are Lab Multimedia Art Festival or Open-Air Theatre Festival. May is the best time for entertainment - this is student month when every university is making ‘Juvenalia’ – concert and other attractions for students. In May it is possible to listen Chopin’s music during Open-Air Concerts in Royal Park next to statue of Chopin. Also very interesting night is ‘Museum Night’ when all cultural places are open for visitors and have prepared special cultural program for that day. Also fanatics of sport won’t be bored here: there are a lot of place for runners in whole Warsaw. It is also possible to rent city bikes and go for trip and left bicycle in other place in Warsaw. For additional information visit www.warsawtour.pl; www.um.warszawa.pl - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS)

- TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE)

The best way to learn about the city is sightseeing on foot. Hence, we recommend taking a walk in the Old Town and its surroundings – the area with numerous monuments, museums and galleries. You can also visit more

distant places, such as Żelazowa Wola by car. However, from the practical point of view, it is not the best means of transport to use in this city. Visitors are advised to use public transport to avoid traffic jams. On weekdays parking in the city centre is charged. In order to reach other parts of the city it is advisable to use public transport. For instance, the tourist 180 bus route leads through all the interesting sites in the city: from Wilanów to Powązki Cemetery. Obviously, the fastest means of transport are underground trains. Warsaw Metro has one line, which connects Bielany District (Młociny station) with its southern part Ursynów (Kabaty station). The Metro runs between 5 a.m. and midnight with trains every 3-4 minutes during peak hours, and every 7-8 minutes during off-peak hours. On Friday and Saturday they also run after midnight every 15 minutes until 2.45 a.m. You can also travel by tram or bus. Regular city buses 1xx, 2xx, 3xx, fast buses 4xx and 5xx, express buses E-x. Express buses run on working days only, during peak hours. There are also suburban buses - 7xx and 8xx. City and suburban lines operate between 4 a.m. and midnight. Night buses - Nxx run from 11.15 p.m. until 4.30 a.m. every 30 or 60 minutes. If you decide to use public transport, it is economical to buy a term ticket, valid for one day or a number of days. In all means of public transport – urban, suburban and underground – it is obligatory to hold a ticket with the printed inscription “ZTM Warszawa”. Tickets are sold at newsagent’s stands. It is also possible to buy them from a driver. Luggage, including bicycles, can be transported without any extra charge. For information on public transport visit: http://www.ztm.waw.pl. As far as taxi service is concerned, the most convenient way is to order it on the phone. If you flag a taxi down make sure you ask how much your fare is going to be. There is also a growing net of bicycle lanes which lead outside the city - to the Kampinos Primeval Forest or Powsin.
