Partners & Key Stakeholders: Enjoy 2012 with us!

Our Guest: Nicolai Wammen Denmark is taking over the Presidency at the most difficult of times, but still we are looking forward to the job! The basic objective for the Danish Presidency will be to help Europe get out of the crisis, while acting as a bridge between the countries that are inside and those outside the Eurozone. The Danish Government has four overall priorities for its EU Presidency as it will work towards a responsible, dynamic, green and safe Europe. Firstly, we need to make Europe more economically responsible through new rules on economic governance, enhanced budgetary discipline in Member States and stronger regulation of the financial sector. Secondly, we want to promote a dynamic Europe that helps stimulate long-term growth and job creation across Europe. Thirdly, we will strive for a greener Europe by putting emphasis on further greening of our economies and promoting green growth. And lastly, we will work towards a safer Europe – both internally and externally, by for example finalising the EU’s common asylum system and work towards a stronger voice for the EU in global affairs. Enlargement will also be an important task for the Danish Presidency as we look forward to continuing the negotiations with Turkey and Iceland, opening negotiations with Montenegro in June and granting candidate status to Serbia in February, in accordance with the conclusions from the European Council 8-9 December. Nicolai Wammen Minister for European Affairs, Denmark

All EU countries – except Britain – have agreed on a new treaty for tighter fiscal discipline and deeper economic integration to save the euro currency. But as attention now turns to the legal details and ratification process, questions are being raised as to what will happen to countries that fail to ratify, with some fearing exclusion from the club.

EU leaders gathered in Brussels agreed on a new treaty to tighten fiscal discipline in the eurozone and address the bloc’s debt problems. The treaty, an intergovernmental agreement outside the EU legal framework, will be drafted by March 2012 and opened to ratification by nations outside the 17-member eurozone.

The purpose of the Energy Efficiency Directive is to save energy and boost growth, but the means through which it will simultaneously achieve both are still to be fleshed out.

MEPs applauded a motion approving Croatia’s EU membership on 1 July 2013, after passing it yesterday (1 December) by a large majority in the European Parliament. EU heads of states are expected to sign the Accession Treaty at next week’s summit in Brussels.

To increase budget efficiency while maintaining salaries at the same level, the Commission is asking officials to work longer hours without giving additional compensation or other sweeteners. EurActiv has spoken with European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, as intensive negotiations with the staff unions are underway.

The proposal submitted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy being discussed at the EU summit (8 December) is unveiling the disaccord of the German-French couple. Diamo voce all’Italia in Europa Give Italy a voice in Europe On 17 October 2011, EurActiv Italia organized a conference in Rome where Mario Monti, Emma Bonino and Antonio Tajani (frtl) called for a stronger voice for Italy in a crisis-riven Europe. One month later, Mario Monti became the new Italian Prime Minister. Near the end of the conference, Monti - in his own philosophical way - professed that “only decisions taken as a community work. We may not yet see it that way, but the Greek crisis will be remembered as a triumph of the Euro culture”. The event was the launching pad for EurActiv.it, organized with the Italian think tank Instituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). It hosted 200 high-level participants from the worlds of politics, business and academics in Italy. It also drew over 30 TV, radio, newspaper and online journalists. The debate was covered, notably, in the Corriere della Sera, Milano Finanza, Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor and ANSA, the Italian news agency.
