EVEN MORE BOOKS PUBLISHED IN 2009: Book production has reached an all time high since Nielsen Book started recording publishing numbers! 26 January 2010, Woking Nielsen Book, the leading supplier of bibliographic information worldwide, announced today that the number of new books published in the UK in 2009 was 133,224, an increase of 3.2% over the previous year’s total of 129,057. This is the highest single year figure within the last 15 years. Nielsen Book runs the ISBN Agency for UK & Ireland, collects and aggregates English language book data from publishers in 70 countries, provides the leading transaction service and runs the world’s largest continuous retail sales monitoring and analysis service. The company is therefore able to offer an unrivalled service to the book industry worldwide and report on book production figures and market analysis. The new book production figures have also increased the overall number of bibliographic records held on the Nielsen Book database to 10.4m globally and 5.8m for UK & Ireland published titles. This includes in-print, print-on-demand, e-books and out-of-print titles. The increases can be accounted for in part by growth in print-on-demand (POD) and digital product, which we expect to continue to increase in the future. Title volumes The first chart (Fig 1) shows the total number of books recorded as being published in the UK (published by a UK registered publisher or made available from a UK distributor for the first time) for the period 1994-2009. The second chart (Fig 2) provides the Irish book production figures which indicates a marginal reduction, and the third chart (Fig 3) is a global comparison with the number of English-language titles recorded by Nielsen Book as having been published somewhere in the world (excluding UK and Ireland). This figure rose to 604,768 in 2009. The ISBN Agency for UK & Ireland is able to capture figures for publishers entering the UK market for the first time. The chart above (Fig 4) illustrates the number of publishers applying for a UK publisher prefix for the first time between 2001 and 2009. As you can see from the chart the number has dropped just slightly in the last year. The chart illustrates the year-on-year increase since 2001 and the 2008 figure of 3,142 is the highest in this period. The market is likely to change in future, as although we are seeing much more self-published product in print and digitally, there is also some consolidation by companies representing self-published authors and so the number of new publishers entering the market will in future depend on the route to market. Nielsen Book’s data collection and aggregation statistics for 2009 The number of product records added to the company’s multi-territory database increased dramatically in 2009 to 831,478, an increase of 87% over the previous record volume of 443,560 added in 2008. The increase can be accounted for by increased and improved collection of data from more sources around the world, multi-format publications (i.e. there is an increased number of formats per title, for instance e-books), and POD (print-on-demand) publishing models which allow out-of-print publications a new lease of life and new market/readership. Record Updating Nielsen Book is also able to provide figures for the number of changes made by suppliers in the last year which have been applied to their database. The majority of changes made are to price and availability information to ensure that the product information is kept up-to-date with local market information relevant to the main English language markets around the world. 2007 43.2m 37.0m 2.0m 2.9m

Between them Brown and Meyer boosted the Adult and Children’s Fiction market by selling 6.0m books and generating £38.9m sales. In Ireland BookScan measured a total of €156.5m in value sales with a total of 14.6m volume sales. The Irish Consumer Market was down 5.4% in value but up 4.4% in volume year on year.
