Serum Homocysteine Levels Are Associated with Infectious Burden: the Persian Gulf Healthy Heart...
٢٧
Abstract
٢٨
Objectives: Circulating homocysteine and infectious burden are independent risk factors for
٢٩
cardiovascular disease. The infectious burden was defined as the number of infectious
٣٠
pathogens to which an individual has been exposed. The association of serum homocysteine
٣١
levels with infectious burden has not yet demonstrated.
٣٢
Methods: Sera of 1754 participants of the Persian Gulf Healthy Heart Study were evaluated for
٣٣
total homocysteine levels and IgG antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori,
٣٤
cytomegalovirus, or herpes simplex virus type 1 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.
٣٥
Results: Circulating homocysteine concentration showed significant associations with
٣٦
Chlamydia pneumonia (β=0.19, P
