Exploring the research, resources, and relevance of gender differences and non-traditional occupations (NTO) These workshops will examine the latest research and resources which support the development and advancement of students pursuing occupations which are non-traditional for their genders. Part One – November 5, 2010 – Normal, IL An Introduction to Non-traditional Occupations (NTO) This workshop will assist participants in discovering teaching methodologies which research has shown effective in reaching this population of learners. In addition, participants will explore resources, consider the role of data in the Perkins Legislation, and network with others who provide services to non-traditional learners.

Part Two – December 9, 2010 – Chicago Area



Why So Few? Women in Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics This report by the AAUW presents in-depth, yet accessible, profiles of eight key research findings that point to environmental and social barriers to women in STEM fields. Join Andresse St. Rose, co-author of Why So Few?, in investigating the research and examining local recruitment and retention strategies for NTO programs. ICSPS staff will assist participants in applying the research to instruction and services for non-traditional learners.

Part Three - March 15, 2011 – St. Charles, IL Pink Brain, Blue Brain, How Small Differences Grow into Troublesome Gaps – And What We Can Do About It In this pre-session to the Connections Conference, Dr. Lise Eliot, Professor of Neuroscience at Rosalind Franklin University, will present information from her book Pink Brain, Blue Brain. Dr. Eliot will share the physiological and social differences that exist between girls and boys and discuss how troubling gender gaps can be closed to assist all students in reaching their fullest potential. ICSPS staff will assist participants in applying the research to instruction and services for non-traditional learners.

All workshops are from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, and cost $25.00 per person. Lunch is included in the cost of the workshop.
