Attendance is obligatory at these seminars. The students should read the texts and commentaries in advance, and actively participate in the discussion in class. Week

Plato. Texts: The Meno. The Republic (extracts).

3 (36)

Aristotle. Texts: The Metaphysics, The Nicomachean Ethics, The Physics (extracts)

Descartes. Text: Discourse on the Method (extracts)

5 (38)

Hume. Texts: Enquiry, Treatise (extracts)

6 (39)

Kant, theory of knowledge. Text: Critique of Pure Reason (extracts)

7 (40)

Kant, ethics. Text: Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals (extracts)

Physics, biology, feminism. Texts by Darwin, Feynman and De Beauvoir.

Week 9 (42) is study week; no seminar or lecture takes place during this period. A plan of the last seven weeks (ethics), weeks 43-48, will be handed out at a later stage. Essay titles for pt. 1 will be handed out during the third week (week 36); essay titles in pt. 2 during the tenth week (week 43). A multiple choice test (pass/no pass) will be held during the last class.
