Text: Bretz, Mary Lee, et al. Pasajes: Lengua. 7th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 2010. Pasajes online workbook (www.mhcentro.com). Course website: Most homework assignments will be done online through the course website at www.mhcentro.com. Please see me for instructions on how to register at the site. The site includes a calendar indicating when homework assignments are due, so check it regularly. There are also practice tests and other resources to help you. Assessment: Your grade will depend on a variety of factors including: chapter tests, a final exam, homework, attendance, and participation. The breakdown is as follows: Chapter tests: 40 percent Midterm exam: 15 percent Final exam: 20 percent Homework: 15 percent Attendance and Participation: 10 percent Tests: There will be four chapter tests, a midterm exam and a final exam. The quizzes will be given online on the day listed on the course calendar. The midterm and final will both be in class and will be comprehensive. Please note: I will not give make-up tests if you miss a test because of an unexcused absence. Final exam: The final exam is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 20 from 8-10:30 a.m. You are expected to take the final on the date it is scheduled. Homework: Homework is required and will count for 15 percent of your grade. You are responsible for preparing the material to be covered in class each day in advance. Please read the assigned pages in the textbook, including all practice exercises. There are also workbook exercises to be completed each day. The workbook is online and can be found at the Centro website (www.mhcentro.com). Check the calendar at the Centro website for homework due dates. In addition I may assign extra work from the Pasajes Online Study Center, located at www.mhhe.com/pasajes7.

Attendance: Regular attendance is required. I will note your attendance every day. You will receive 2 points for every day you are here on time, 1 point if you are late, 0 points if you are absent or more than 15 minutes late. To be excused, an absence will require a note from your doctor. Tardiness: If you are more than 15 minutes late for a class it will count as an absence. Classroom Policies and Disruptive Behavior: The purpose of this class is to learn the basics of the Spanish language. This will involve listening to the instructor, responding when asked, and working with your fellow students in structured classroom activities. Disruptive behavior not only shows disrespect to the instructor, but also to your fellow students. Please keep in mind that disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and can lead to disciplinary action and/or removal from class. More specifically, disruptive behavior will cost you points from your participation grade. With that in mind, here are a few classroom policies:  No talking, unless directed by the instructor.  No reading of newspapers or other outside material during class.  No playing of video games during class.  Turn off all cell phones and pagers during class.  No using of camera phones during class.  Do not bring visitors to class unless you clear it with the instructor first.  Absolutely no children in class.  No eating during class.  Drinks are permitted. Accommodations for students with disabilities: The University is committed to providing reasonable academic accommodation to students with disabilities. Those with physical, perceptual, or learning disabilities should contact Disability Programs and Resource Center for information regarding accommodations. Please notify me prior to the first quiz if you need accommodation. I will need to see documentation, i.e. a letter from your doctor or from the Disability Programs and Resource Center. If you need accommodation, you must make a formal request through Disability Programs and Resource Center in Room 110, Student Services Building. Call (415) 338-2472 (voice/TTY); Fax (415) 338-1041. Cheating and Plagiarism: Cheating and plagiarism cannot be tolerated in this or any other class in the university. Penalties for cheating can include a failing grade on the specific assignment involved, a failing grade in the course, or expulsion from the university, depending on the severity of the case. Message: Do your own work. Syllabus is subject to change: This syllabus and schedule are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances. If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to check on announcements made while you were absent. Announcements and changes to the schedule will be posted on the class Blackboard site. Calendar: Below you will find the anticipated schedule for the semester. The schedule lists which pages need to be read prior to each day’s class. It is your responsibility to check the Centro website (www.mhcentro.com) regularly to make sure you turn in workbook exercises on time.
