Store Cards in the U.S. 2012 Retailers and third-party private label specialists owned $96.47 billion in credit card outstandings at year-end 2012, an increase of $4.35 billion or 4.7% versus 2011. By comparison, U.S. general purpose credit card issuers of Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express cards saw their outstandings increase 0.1%. However, purchase volume on store cards increased only 5.1% to $154.20 billion, while U.S. general purpose card spending at merchants rose 8.4% last year.
