FET COLLEGES INSTITUTIONS OF FIRST CHOICE In 2002 KZN’s 24 Technical Colleges became nine Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges. These aim to meet the skills development needs of their communities and the labour market, providing affordable access to education and training. The underlying objective is to adequately prepare learners for the demands of the workplace or equip them with the necessary skills to make self-employment a viable option. This focus on practical skills training and committment to developing and training economically active graduates makes FET Colleges the way to go for school leavers! FET Qualifications Further Education and Training Institutions currently offer formal Business and Engineering Studies at levels N4 to N6. In addition, each College boasts a number of Skills Centres which provide training to communities, enabling them to gain marketable skills. In 2007 a new vocational-based curriculum was introduced to replace NIC/NSC and N1 N3 qualifications by way of a phased in approach. The NC(V) programmes are vocationally based. They aim to provide students with the practical skills necessary to access careers in a range of vocational fields in which South Africa is experiencing skills shortages, as well as Higher Education opportunities. For more information contact your nearest FET College (refer to back page for contact details).
