Finding Science and Social Science Articles Using Web of Science Searching by Topic and/or Author Getting started

1. Start at the Biomedical Library home page for best results: http://www.library.ucla.edu/biomed 2. Click the Key Resources tab and select Web of Science (under Article Databases).

Basics

To limit your search to a specific part of Web of Science or search in a specific year, click the (Change Limits) link at the bottom of the screen. You may also search all years or select specific ones by using the dropdown menus.

You may search all three parts of Web of Science or select a specific one.

1. Enter terms in the appropriate search box(es). Be sure to follow the formats indicated for each piece of information. For example, authors’ names must be entered last name, first initial followed by an asterisk (*). Journal titles must be abbreviated exactly the way they are in Web of Science. Click the search aid icon abbreviations. a.

Searching by Topic: Click in the Topic box and type key words describing your topic. Use the truncation symbol (*) at the root of any word that could have variable endings; for example, territor* will retrieve territory, territories, territorial, etc.

Note: If you wish to combine phrases or words, you must separate the items with the word AND in capital letters. b. Searching by Author: Click in the Author box and type the author’s last name and first initial. Use the truncation symbol (*) after the initial; for example, ignarro l* will retrieve Ignarro L, Ignarro LJ, etc. You also may click on the search aid icon add authors’ names to your search.

4. Click on the title of an article to get more information. You will be taken to a screen that contains the abstract of the article as well as links to related articles, for locations, the cited references for that article, and citations for any articles that have cited this one in their references.

Locating Items from Your Search Results

1. To see electronic/print access to a title, use the a.

If you are not finding enough material on your topic, there are several ways to expand your search. Click on the title of any article that is of interest to you and try the following options. 1. Click the the original article.

Saving Search Results to a List

You may save a list of citations for printing, e-mailing, and downloading. 1. Click on the box ( ) next to each item you wish to save. 2. Click list.
