Summer is Coming! Thinking of Getting Your Hair Cut to Beat the Heat? Consider donating your hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to children who suffer from long-term hair loss. Youth services librarian Jane Perreault has recently donated approximately 16 inches of hair! She says: "I guess I just didn't want to go through another Louisiana summer with such a huge amount of long hair. I had once before donated my hair to Locks of Love, I guess about 3 years ago, and hadn't had a significant amount cut since then, and I decided to do that again. Why not?” Why not indeed? Donating your hair is easy. Guidelines from the LOL website (http://www.locksoflove.org) stipulate that: • 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece. • Hair must be in a ponytail or braid before it is cut. • Hair must be clean and completely dry before it is mailed in.

• Place the ponytail or braid inside of a plastic bag, and then inside of a padded envelope. • Fill out the hair donation form, or write your name and address on a separate sheet of paper and include inside the envelope. • All hair donations must be mailed to Locks of Love at: 2925 10th Avenue N Suite 102 Lake Worth, FL 33461 According to Locks of Love, many of their donations come from generous children who want to help other children. Want to share with your child an inspiring story about a girl who decides to donate her most prized possession? Check out Melissa Parkington's Beautiful, Beautiful Hair by Pat Brisson.

(Re)Introducing Miss Jane, MLIS! Jane Perreault, aka "Miss Jane" to younger patrons, received an M.L.I.S on May 18 from L.S.U's School of Library and Information Science. Miss Jane has been working towards her degree for the past 5 years, going to school parttime, while she has worked as the Children's Services Assistant. On May 28 she will take over as Youth Services Librarian for the Covington Branch. Her desk will be in the children's area and she will be on hand to help children, teens and parents with book suggestions and homework assign-

ments. She will also conduct storytimes, afterschool, summer and teen programs. Says Miss Jane, "I want to thank everyone who has encouraged me throughout the years I attended the School of Library and Information Science at LSU, particularly my co-workers here at St. Tammany Parish Library. Even though I have my degree now, I want to continue to learn. And most of all, I want to try to be the kind of friendly, knowledgable and helpful librarian that, if I were in the patron's shoes, I would want to meet."

New Database Offers Language Instruction at Your Speed! STPL is pleased to offer two complementary, online approaches to language learning: the Rosetta Stone and the Pimsleur learning systems. The library has purchased the use of both systems for you, usable either inside your library branches or from home. The Rosetta Stone training is available as one of our database selections; the Pimsleur instruction is available as a set of audio books you can check out by downloading them to your computer. If you have an MP3 player with “digital rights management” software (also known as DRM) you may transfer the audio book to your MP3 player. The two language learning systems are very different from each other, but work together to give you a more thorough understanding of a foreign language. You have 5 languages available from Rosetta Stone, and 550 hours of instruction per language. Of course, the instruction can be repeated as often as desired. The five languages we have available are: Spanish (Latin American flavor) so we can talk to our new neighbors, English, so our new neighbors can talk with us, French, Japanese, and Italian. To use Rosetta Stone from home patrons must have the

French

most recent version of Adobe’s Shockwave multimedia viewer installed. When you go to the database the first time, you will need to set up an account. There is no additional charge for this; you have already paid for it with your St. Tammany Parish property taxes. According to the makers of Rosetta Stone, the software “…utilizes a combination of images, text, and sound, with difficulty levels increasing as the student progresses, in order to teach various vocabulary terms and grammatical functions intuitively, without drills or translation.” Through NetLibrary’s eAudiobook system we have instruction in more than 30 foreign languages available for you. English as a second language is also available for native speakers of many languages. To use NetLibrary, you click on the “Download eAudiobooks” link on the STPL home page (www.sttammany.lib.la.us). Then login to NetLibrary to create your account and download eAudiobooks. NOTE: eAudiobooks are NOT compatible with iPods. According to the makers of the Pimsleur language learning system, it “…is a language acquisition method developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur. It is based on four main principles: Anticipation, Graduated Interval Recall, Core Vocabulary, and Organic Learning.”
