Support at Amersham & Wycombe College Support for Students We provide a range of support for students at the college through our Student Services department and have experienced and knowledgeable staff who can support students with any issues or concerns they may have. This may include: • Learning Support – our team of experienced tutors and specialist staff provide a confidential and flexible service to meet a range of student needs including dyslexia or dyspraxia, hearing or sight impairment, mobility difficulties or healthcare needs. This includes assessing and discussing your needs. We can provide support when you are applying or thinking about applying for a course as well as on course support in the form of in-class learning support, additional tutorials at an agreed time and place or in making arrangements with examination boards for additional time or other special arrangements • Financial Support – the college has a range of financial support packages available for students, including a bursary for 16-19 year old students, support with the costs of coming to college such as travel or course materials, and childcare support for students who require it. Financial support varies depending on the level of need and is means tested.

10

• Personal Support – we have a range of staff who are experienced in providing pastoral support for our younger learners and this can be offered through a variety of methods including one to one support or group tutorials. We aim to support our students to develop personal, social and employability skills through these services. Students can also access Connexions or the National Careers Service via college for personal, social or careers advice.

Advanced Learning Loans Adult learners aged 24 or older can access financial support with the cost of a course at Level 3 or above with an Advanced Learning Loan. These loans do have to be paid back, but repayments won’t start until at least April 2016 and not until you are earning £21000 per year. These loans are not dependent on your current income, and do not involve any credit checks. Find out more at www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans.

Student Activities & Enrichment We provide a variety of activities to develop students’ personal and social skills and increase their employability. We have sports clubs taking place every day at each site, and there are non-sporting activities such as hair braiding, arts & crafts, debate club and PlayStation club available as well as trips out throughout the year. We employ a team of staff to ensure there are plenty of opportunities for students to develop a hobby, learn a new skill and broaden their personal and social world- this includes a focus on enterprise and employability and developing skills such as communication, team work and creative thinking, so that our students are ready for university or employment when they leave us. We have an active student voice within the college, with students taking on roles such as class rep or student governor and attending regular events such as “Meet the Manager” lunch, our annual student conference or giving us informal feedback at a Talkback stand. We value the contribution our students make to the college and use their feedback to continuously improve what we are doing at every level of the organization.

Equality & Diversity We are committed to equality of opportunity for all our students and we regard all as being of equal value, regardless of ethnicity, age, disability, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or marital or parental status. We are proud of our diverse community at Amersham & Wycombe College and we celebrate it with an annual calendar of events & competitions . You can read our full equality & diversity policy and see our calendar on our website.

English and maths = employability The College is committed to the development of English and maths and all students on a full time course will continue their studies in English and maths as part of their course until they reach the industry acceptable standard of ‘C’ Grade in GCSE or equivalent. Students that have achieved a ‘D’ grade will be given the opportunity to resit their GCSE in both English and maths. For students who have achieved a grade ‘E’ or lower they will be studying functional skills English and maths.

11

Interview process For all of our full time courses you will be required to attend an interview. Our interview process involves meeting a member from that course/ department and discussing with them the following aspects: • Why you have chosen the course? • What you can expect from the course • What you can expect from the college • Maths and English requirements whilst on the course • Answer any specific questions you have For some courses you may be required to bring in some work/a portfolio with as part of the process and for some there may be an audition.

Transport From September 2013, getting to Amersham & Wycombe College’s two centres in Amersham & High Wycombe is much easier thanks to the introduction of new Transport funding bus routes and the For College minibuses, all you need to do is purchase a travel ticket(s) from College improved frequency reception and present this to the minibus driver when you get on. Unfortunately of existing routes. Heavily subsidised fares mean that it will cost no more than £1 for a single journey on most routes – even from as far away as Slough to the High Wycombe Centre, or Hemel Hempsted to Amersham.

You will also be required to complete an initial assessment in English and maths which is a process to enable the college to look at what level you are working at It helps us to identify the correct course and make sure you have all your needs catered for.

A new improved Carousel 36 bus route with more frequent times, more capacity and additional stops is in operation. This route serves the High Wycombe Centre from Chesham, High Wycombe town centre and Bourne End station, offering improved access for students from Maidenhead in particular.

After the interview you will be written to within 2 weeks and told if you have been offered a place onto the course. You will be a given a conditional offer which means that your place will be dependent on your examination results. You will then be written to nearer the time and given a date for enrolment near to the start date of the course.

Additionally, the College’s mini buses will operate during term time in and around locations in South Buckinghamshire and again this service costs no more than £1 per single journey for College students on production of their pass when boarding the bus. Check our website for more detailed information.

the driver will not be able to allow you to travel without your ticket so make sure you have this with you!

For Carousel buses, you will need to present your College student ID card to the driver who will then be able to charge you the discounted fare. Typically, this is half what it would normally cost. The driver will not be able to give your college discount without your student ID card. Please note that the same fare applies whichever bus stop you get on or off from. www.amersham.ac.uk/transport

Case study

Jack Pierce - Art & Design “I studied a BTEC National Diploma in Photography at Amersham and Wycombe College between the years of 2010 and 2012. If I had to sum up the experience I had over the two years studying there, I could call it nothing less than phenomenal. I had very primitive knowledge of web design which had grown from toying around building my own website at home. The eye for design, which was honed whilst at Amersham, helped dramatically. It meant I was able to achieve websites that look fantastic and modern, or really capture what the customer wanted. I would recommend its courses to anyone – young or old – interested in carrying on in Further Education or simply expanding their skill set.” Jack’s website: www.jackpierce.co.uk

Barney Banks - Peter Jones Enterprise Academy “Studying a Business BTEC at college provided me with me the skills and knowledge fundamental to success in business. All of the tutors I had whilst studying at college knew their subjects inside out and were always willing to provide extra help and support when needed. I believe the setup of a BTEC is much more like that of a business due to the adult approach to learning and coursework assessment - No Exams! Studying a BTEC does not put you at a disadvantage to students that have A levels when applying for university or when trying to get a job. Having a BTEC in business set me apart from other applicants and helped me get the job I wanted. Having also done AS Levels, I would not recommend them to anybody and believe that a BTEC sets you up far better for life at university or in a work environment.”

Level 1 preparation for Employment in Construction

Electrical Are you interested in being part of the exciting and growing electrical industry? Or perhaps you are already a fully-qualified electrician, looking to update your skills on a part time course? Either way, if you want to learn electrical installation, then it’s vital that you learn the latest techniques, using the latest machinery and equipment.

The Centre gives our students the opportunity to study electrical courses using the very latest industry standard equipment. We have fantastic facilities for you to train in that replicate real working conditions.

Case study

We have a very good reputation for teaching electrical installation and our students succeed when they leave us. For example, Matthew Hague who studied with us from Level 2 Electro Technical Technology, Level 3 Electro Technical Certificate and then went onto become a Level 3 Apprentice; as an apprentice, he works at MP Electrical and gets day release to complete

“I chose Amersham & Wycombe College because it had the best facilities and reputation locally. I started on the level 2 course and am now doing a level 3 Apprenticeship.

the study aspect of his apprenticeship at Amersham & Wycombe College; we were so proud when Matthew was named Winner of the 2012 National Sparks Apprentice of the Year.

Matthew Hague - Electrical

The college part of the course is really important as you get to learn all the theory, which you can’t really learn on the job. I am now capable of completely wiring a house and work with my supervisor in terms of him officially signing my work off. I am also studying in the evenings to complete my suite of qualifications. I can recommend vocational training, don’t just follow the A Levels/university route - it isn’t the only way and doing a vocational course can really give you the right skills you need to get on in life. It is paying off for me in terms of work and achievement – I won the National Sparks Apprentice of the Year competition 2012 – competing for the Sparks magazine prize against electrical Apprentices nationally.”

Foundation Studies

We offer foundation training in the hospitality and retail industries – as well as personal and social development and functional skills.

Whoever you are, whatever level you are at, or if you haven’t got any qualifications, we’ll get you onto the right course.

We have recently invested in new facilities, including a new kitchen at our High Wycombe centre to teach students the basics of cooking and preparing food in everyday living.

Our Foundation Studies courses are a set of courses which are an entry point to further education and preparation for independent living and employment.

We also have an independent living unit in Amersham, which is now open to help teach students independent living skills in the home; the fully-equipped building provides a realistic environment in which learners can practice skills that they would need for living independently. There are no formal entry requirements for these courses; simply call the College to find out more.

The College has outstanding facilities for foundation students and a strong reputation in the region for its caring staff and programmes which are designed to integrate students into society. A fully-equipped independent living unit, furnished in collaboration with foundation students enables learners to develop the skills they need to cope with in daily life. A state of the art kitchen allows students to achieve similar objectives whilst learning practical cookery skills. The College works in conjunction with local schools, MacIntyre, Talkback, Bucks County Council and other partners in developing programmes for learners at college.

Gas & Plumbing Do you want to start a career in the field of plumbing and gas? Or are you already a qualified gas engineer looking to update your skills, perhaps in the area of eco technologies? This year we are launching a Gas Safe course called the Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Gas Utilisation, Installation and Maintenance. This qualification will allow you to gain a license to practice and enable you to be on the Gas Safe Register and work legally in the UK. This course is open to all, but is free to students under 24, so it’s a great opportunity to retrain or up skill. For those aged over 24 who would also like to study this course, payment options include a new 24-plus loan introduced earlier this year to help spread the financial burden.

In order to get this qualification, you need to be working with a Gas Safe engineer (i.e have a job); this is difficult in the current economic climate, so we will help you with that. The special thing about our Diploma is that we will arrange a placement/internship for you, so you can get the right work experience and, therefore, the qualification. You will need to be interviewed for this course to ensure this is right for you and your circumstances. For qualified gas engineers, we have a range of courses to supplement your current skills including heat pump systems and power flushing. Also, with the launch of the Green Deal, there are many opportunities for you to secure different types of work over the coming months/ years. So, to help you to keep up to date with the latest green/eco technologies we offer a range of courses including; Installing Solar Panels and Rainwater Harvesting. The College is an accredited centre for the renewal of CSCS safety cards for workers on construction sites.

Case study

Henry Flynn Gas & Plumbing “I joined this course very late and wasn’t sure whether I would make the grade, but after a successful interview and test and a clear indication from tutors what lay ahead for me I decided to grasp this opportunity and make it work. I was fortunate to have been offered a position as a plumbing apprentice when I started the course and this has been brilliant for me. Before starting this course I jumped from job to job but with an apprenticeship I feel as if I am achieving something new every day.”

Media Would you like a career in media? Amersham & Wycombe College is arguably one of the best places in the country to kick start it. We are one of just twenty Founder Colleges of the National Skills Academy, Creative and Cultural’s network – recognition of the quality and specialism of our Creative Industries training and facilities. Creative Industries is one of the fastest growing areas in the UK and Amersham & Wycombe are leading the way in imagination, innovation and enterprise. We utilise the very latest technology available to the media industry including a professional Mo Cap supplied by Centroid Motion Capture and a versatile Green Screen Studio.

We pride ourselves on our industry links and have developed the Centroid Motion Capture Academy where student will learn industry techniques from professionals. We also have close links with Pinewood Studio; recently, HRH The Duke of York visited Pinewood to launch the Pinewood Studios Management Diploma. The Diploma will equip candidates with everything they need to effectively run a worldclass studio facility for the screen based industries. The course has been developed by Pinewood in conjunction with Amersham and Wycombe College and will be rolled out to the wider industry in the future. As further proof of our innovation in the field of media, we were the first college in the country to offer an advanced apprenticeship in creative & digital media. So, for a successful career in media, Amersham & Wycombe College is a great place to start.

Case study

Scott McGreal - Media “I wanted to study at the College because of the facilities offered and the excellent reputation of tutors. You do not get this kind of equipment in any other college and once I saw the TV studio I was sold. Over the past two years I feel as if I have grown a great deal as an individual and developed a strong technical and practical understanding of the TV industry. I have felt engaged in learning, have been given lots of responsibility and have always been treated as an adult. One of the biggest things I’ve learnt is how to apply myself in a variety of situations as a result of developing my people skills and being given the role of student ambassador for the College.”

Scott was awarded the prestigious title of BTEC Student of the Year in Media in recognition of his tremendous achievements, work ethic, social skills and overall ability during the two year course. He was also runner up in the World Skills 2012 competition.

I learnt a great deal about recording, composing and playing music as part of a heavy rock band ‘EXIST’. Playing with the band at the College was a real highlight for me.”

Peter Jones Enterprise Academy “Entrepreneurs are not born, they’re made.” The Peter Jones Enterprise Academy is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to realise their business dreams. Set up by Peter Jones, CBE, star of ‘Dragon’s Den, the Academy was born here at Amersham & Wycombe College in 2009 and was first in the UK to offer courses in enterprise and entrepreneurship where students are able to set up and run their own businesses.

To make the course as commercial and relevant as possible, Peter Jones’ vision was to bring the boardroom into the classroom through a significant amount of the syllabus being delivered by visiting guest speakers from industry (for example trademark experts, tax specialists, social media pioneers). There are also termly master classes from well-known entrepreneurs – such as David and Vanessa Gold of West Ham and Ann Summers fame and Paul Lindley of Ella’s Kitchen fame – all of whom inspire learners with their tales of trials and tribulations on their journey to success. There are monthly business surgeries where learners have one-to-one meetings with people from business to discuss their ideas and any current issues they would like advice on. All learners get to pitch their business ideas, Dragon’s Den style, to a panel of investors. Meet Peter Jones at the graduation: All learners who pass are invited to the annual graduation ceremony where they get to shake hands with Peter and have their photo taken with him.

Case study

Ayo Jenyo - Peter Jones Enterprise Academy “My childhood dream, from the age of seven, was to one day set up and run my very own business. The Academy taught me that entrepreneurship is similar to an iceberg, in that 90% of its mass is underwater. The depth of 90% of an entrepreneur is drive, hunger, ambition, the ability to be a sponge, continually learning and picking up skills amongst many more others.”

Ayo faced his fair share of trials at the Academy but he learnt the importance of positive thinking and hard work, which all paid off when he was awarded the National Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2010. Three years have passed since Ayo graduated from the Academy and he is now running a successful property investment company with two experienced investors. Most recently Ayo was invited to act as the Academy spokesperson when some of our Academy Ambassadors attended a reception at Buckingham Palace with His Royal Highness The Duke of York and Peter Jones CBE.
