Opening Doors to Hope and Recovery

2013 Annual Report Gateway Homes is the proud recipient of The Cameron Foundation's 2013 Cleveland A. Wright Award for Outstanding Community Service!

Thank You for Supporting Gateway Homes

his summer, July 4th, my granddaughter turned 10 years old. As I watched her and her friends at the birthday pool party I overheard many of the parents talking about the number of parties their children attended. I thought about how parents take for granted the social opportunities and inclusiveness that their sons and daughters experience as a routine part of their lives. While these opportunities are commonplace for the majority of children becoming adults, it is the juxtaposition for individuals who experience mental illness. Last year Gateway’s management was interested in surveying the satisfaction of the residents with the services provided. Staff was accustomed to emphasizing to the residents the importance of medication compliance, seeing one’s psychiatrist routinely and managing symptoms of one’s mental illness. Needless to say staff was surprised to find out that although these issues were important they were not the most important to the residents. Opportunities for inclusion and socialization topped the resident’s priorities. As a result of this information, additional resources for residents focusing on the total person, i.e., wellness, spirituality, education, employment are being emphasized in our current programming. Examples include the addition of a nurse practitioner on campus to address health and wellness, the introduction of iPod technology to enhance practical coping skills and utilization of applications for management of daily living activities, and increased attention to the resident’s desires to provide structured activities throughout the community. The Fairfax project continues to thrive! This year, three of our original residents have transitioned out of Gateway while other individuals are focusing on more independent living arrangements in the community. This project serves a vital need for Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute as a step down from hospitalization with a focus on recovery oriented programming and activities. As well, Gateway developed an additional commitment by partnering with Fairfax Falls Church CSB to provide housing and services for a few individuals in Lorton, VA. This project was made possible through collaboration with Fairfax Housing and Redevelopment Commission. Gateway’s ability to respond to the needs of our residents is a direct result of your generous support. I hope that you continue to view yourself as a catalyst for change in others’ lives through your contribution to Gateway. Remember inclusion is a priority for individuals who experience mental illness and you are making that a reality. Again, Gateway is committed to expanding horizons to help communities meet the needs of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. We are most proud to be seen as a model program for the state of Virginia! Sincerely, Lynda Hyatt, Ph.D Executive and Clinical Director

ateway Homes not only helps individuals with mental illness become independent but it also provides a supportive learning environment for students who will contribute to the mental health field. As a working college student taking classes online at Capella University working towards my Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling it was difficult to find internship sites in the community that would accept online students. Gateway opened the door for me and other online students to gain experience in the field of mental health. The internship experience was educational as I was able to put knowledge gained into practice by conducting group and individual therapy. The residents allowed me to enter their world which has expanded my knowledge about mental illness. Today, I am a full time staff member for Gateway Homes working as a Mental Health Clinician. As an employee of Gateway, I have been afforded the opportunity to grow professionally by receiving supervision and support from experienced professionals. Gateway is an organization that not only gives back to the residents and the community, but gives back to its staff as well.

This year Gateway Homes provided services to 111 residents at the facilities located in Fairfax and Chesterfield, VA. Over 85 percent have returned to independent living.

Today, I am a full time staff member for Gateway Homes. Jenine Wilson

A Parent and Daughter's Story... Mental illness can affect anyone at any time in their life. People with this disease are entitled to a happy, healthy life.We asked Barbara and her daughter Jen to talk about the impact this disease has had on their lives.

B

arbara: Watching a loved one suffer from a diagnosis of a serious mental illness must be overwhelming...can you describe your feelings at the onset of your daughter's illness? A combination of desperation, helplessness, anger, guilt, sorrow. Many, many tears have been shed at the loss of what my husband and I had assumed would be the natural path of our daughter’s life. There is a tremendously high emotional toll when this horrible disease invades your family life because it affects each and every member of the family and there is so little real support and understanding from the outside.

What is your best advice you can give individuals who are in the early stages of recovery? Believe that you are a person of worth whether you are suffering from mental illness or not. This disease is not a character flaw and you are as entitled to a good and happy life.

Throughout the process of helping your daughter recover, what have you learned that could help someone else?

2

2013 Annual Report

Have reasonable expectations for what the mentally ill person can actually accomplish and in what time-frame. We would not expect somebody with heart disease or a failing liver to be polevaulting and we can’t expect the mentally ill person to make rational and sensible decisions all the time. My experience has been that caring for somebody with physical problems is infinitely easier than caring for a person with

mental illness. It is a completely enervating experience and can leave one exhausted, hopeless, angry, and frustrated. So the best advice I can give to any family member is to take care of themselves, physically and mentally, and never to take the behaviors personally. Be prepared for the inevitable setbacks and disappointments while always offering hope to your family member…even when you are having a hard time believing it yourself.

How has Gateway played a role in your daughter's success? Most facilities are just warehouses for the disabled person. No resources are available for anything other than the most basic of needs: shelter and food. And often even the shelter is dismal. A mental hospital in Richmond once discharged Jen to a group home where when we arrived, they were heating the house with an electric oven. The furnace was out and they were all huddled in the kitchen with the oven door open for heat. Enough said. The sick person is often housed in an environment that smacks more of punishment than treatment. These most unstable of people are thrown into environments where staff is untrained and expectations are ridiculous and unreasonable. I don’t think many “healthy” people would do well living in these group homes and certainly not people who are essentially fragile and misunderstood. If only the most basic of human needs is taken care of, then the mentally ill person often sinks into a downward spiral of isolation, loneliness, despair. How could anybody have hope and motivation when they have absolutely no stimulation or basic treatment? People with mental illness need outlets just like everybody else. Providing a well-balanced, safe living environment goes a long way towards giving the resident the solid foundation they need to start improving and is where Gateway is completely unique in the Richmond area. Gateway has done a great job of providing the various therapies needed for managing a mental illness while giving the parent/family member peace of mind that their loved one is in a safe environment where they can be given the tools to work towards having a more successful life. Jen particularly enjoys her groups. She also is so happy to have access to the exercise equipment and the walking trails around Gateway. She loves to go on the weekly outings and is proud of her good work doing various chores. She has lost 44 pounds since coming to Gateway. She feels safe and cared for and wakes up with a feeling of having something to look forward to. Gateway has worked hard to give Jen the special attention she requires as she is both deaf and epileptic in addition to mentally ill. Her doctor there has changed her psychiatric meds so that she feels better and suffers fewer side effects.

Before mental illness disrupted her life, what were her childhood dreams, the education she achieved, her talents. Jen was an avid reader, poet, and occasional artist. She loved to ride her bike, bowl, ski, and go to movies. And she had a passionate love of music. This, too, was stolen from her by her deafness. But her real love was French which she learned to speak quite fluently. She had hopes to live and study in France. In high school she traveled to Quebec province, France and Egypt. Jen was accepted to Hollins College here in Virginia and planned to study liberal arts but graduation from high school was her highest level of formal education. Instead of entering college, Jen went to Poplar Springs Psychiatric Hospital as her mental illness was getting less and less manageable and her doctors felt that going to college would perhaps throw her over the edge.

People with mental illness need HERE else. outletsPHOTO just like everybody Providing a well-balanced, safe living environment goes a long way towards giving the resident the solid foundation they need to start improving and is where Gateway is completely unique in the Richmond area.

en: Of the many services and activities Gateway has to offer, what is your favorite thing to do?

My favorite thing about Gateway are the outings. My favorite outing so far was to Carter Mountain. We got to ride through the apple orchard on a hay ride and learned about the history of the area and orchard.

What have you learned at Gateway? I have learned to be more healthy and have even lost some weight. I've learned to focus on myself and not be so worried about others and what they think of me.

What do you still want to learn at Gateway? I still want to maintain being healthy both physically and mentally. Coming to groups and working on my goals and getting better each day.

Jen

I still want to maintain being healthy both physically and mentallly.

Gateway Receives Award for Outstanding Community Service

T

he Cameron Foundation’s Cleveland A. Wright Award for Outstanding Community Service rewards nonprofit organizations for outstanding work that improves the quality of life of residents of Petersburg, Hopewell, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Colonial Heights, southern Chesterfield, and Sussex. This award is named in honor of The Cameron Foundation’s first president and current board member for his leadership and dedicated service to the community. As the award recipient, Gateway Homes, Inc. was able to demonstrate the impact of its work in the communities it serves. We appreciate this honor and dedicate our services to further benefit the lives of those in our community who cope with the effect of mental illness on their daily life.

his year, Gateway toiled over a wonderful garden nurtured by our residents. While the fruits and vegetables were eaten by all, it was a great way to save money, share new recipes, and develop a new skill set. It was heartwarming to see the residents excited about taking the fruits and vegetables back to their apartments. We are hoping for an even bigger crop next year! 4

Our New House Honors Reverend Robert Seiler

R

everend Robert Seiler knew that mental illness was not a choice. He was passionate about helping those with mental illness find the treatment they need in order to begin a future filled with hope and dignity. His strength and fearless determination was seen elsewhere too; Rev. Seiler was in the U.S. Air Corps and flew 33 combat missions during WWII and later, was a minister of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Throughout his career, he worked tirelessly to define Gateway’s mission in hopes that one day, Gateway would be the organization it is today; a sought after treatment program rooted in compassion and dedication to making each of our residents achieve success. In his honor, we are naming our new house we purchased recently, the SEILER HOUSE. At Gateway, we hope it will remind all of us that it only takes ONE person to make a HUGE difference.

Volunteers’s Are at the Heart of Gateway's Success! Walmart continues to help us whenever we call! Whether it a deck needing to be built or gravel to be dispersed, they are a wonderful team of hardworking volunteers. And I would be remiss if I did not mention the generous financial gift we receive. Walmart shows you first hand that they are dedicated to our community…kudos to all who help us! Take a look at the pictures of Allianz landscaping around our Activity Center…such a positive group of professionals who gave of their time and talent to GIVE BACK to an organization that is most grateful! We hope to continue this relationship in the years to come.

A

t Gateway we have a multitude of volunteers who see to it that our apartments are nicely decorated, our campus is landscaped, our residents have an opportunity to socialize, and all of our residents have gifts during the holiday season. For all of this generosity, we find it difficult to express our gratitude in words. St. James’s Episcopal Church has a group of folks well known as the “Martha Stewart Ministry.” As you might have surmised, they do a fantastic job making our apartments on campus a “home” for our residents with their decorating expertise. For many of our residents, it is the nicest place they have ever lived…what a wonderful gift to give someone. Thank you all! St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Gabriel Catholic Church make sure all of our residents, approximately 100 individuals, receive gifts at our holiday party. The generosity of the parishioners is overwhelming. Watching the residents smile at the enormity of their gifts tells us that being thought of during this special time of year is very important. We all want to know that we matter to someone, especially during the holidays. Thank you for this enormous gift of love and generosity.

his quote exemplifies all who knew Lowndes Burke, a generous and devoted Board Member at Gateway Homes who passed away February 10, 2013. No longer with us physically, Lowndes will continue to be with us in spirit. Lowndes had a long and successful career in the banking industry and was held to the highest esteem by his colleagues and clients. He also served on the boards of many central Virginia organizations including Homeward and the Arts Council of Richmond, while actively participating with the Boy Scouts of America and Indian Princesses. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he was on the vestry and co-chair of the current Capital Campaign. While he will be greatly missed, we will all remember his generosity, integrity, and dedication to helping those most in need in our community.
