THE SCHEDULE - BEETHOVEN FESTIVAL: LOVE 2013
The International Beethoven Project, led by President and Artistic Director George Lepauw, is pleased to present Beethoven Festival: LOVE 2013, the organization’s third annual multidisciplinary festival inspired by the creativity and genius of Ludwig van Beethoven, September 7-15, 2013 in Chicago. Over 100 events spanning nine days include classical and contemporary musical performances, visual art exhibitions, performance and installation art, fashion shows, education and technology, exploring themes of love, religion, suffering and the path of the true artist. This year’s Beethoven Festival is our most diverse yet. An extraordinary lineup of performing artists from Chicago and the world are coming together to collaborate, inspire, and explore the meaning of Beethoven, art and love in 2013. Many living composers, rockers, jazz and electronica artists will perform their works for the first time. This festival is all about creative collaboration – and that is how we have chosen to express our love this year. Although it’s a well-explored subject through the ages, LOVE does relate particularly well this year given how societal views are evolving on the concept of relationships, and it connects profoundly to Beethoven’s own story – most vividly in his passionate and beautiful letters to the ‘Immortal Beloved’. Love fuels the creative fire that artists need, and in our third annual festival we’re showcasing what drives artists to create and perform passionately at the highest level. The International Beethoven Project is growing a family of creatives who are committed in this way, and who feel as strongly as we do about making Chicago, and the world, a better place through the arts and culture. The schedule that follows includes the official, hard events. However, additional layers such as fashion, impromptu performances, impromptu artist Q & As, and so on, will constantly surprise and delight. Come to the festival expecting the unexpected! In addition to the full schedule below, we will also have a special project taking place at 2 North Riverside Plaza, on the Chicago River, just across from the Civic Opera building. Justin Orvis Steimer, last year’s Artist-in-Residence, will be creating a large painting during the course of the Festival Week, and musicians will perform outdoor impromptus during part of the time. We hope you will stop and say hello! The 2 N Riverside Plaza schedule is as follows: Weekdays: Friday, September 6th and ending Friday September 13th: 2pm-6 (Music 4-6pm) Saturdays from Noon to 2pm
