GCPC President’s Message   Wow! What an exhibit! For those of you who haven’t seen our club photo exhibit at the Gmeiner, you better hurry down for a look. I am once again amazed at the quality of work that this group generates. There must be something in the mountain air that breeds great photographers. The variety of subjects is astounding. I have had several people (not club members) tell me that it is the best photography display they have seen at the Gmeiner. I would like to thank several people for helping make the show such a success. Foremost, thanks to Wolfram Jobst who did all the legwork to make this happen, Tina Tolins for helping to hang the show, Suzan Richar and Chelsea Richards for putting together the great display at the opening, Mia Anderson for helping receive photos and all of you who brought the refreshments. If I forgot anyone, forgive me. The meeting last week generated a lot of great conversation about the images. I almost had to force people to stop talking about them. How wonderful! I am proud of the club and what we have accomplished and I hope it continues to grow. That brings me to an important subject that Tina and I have both mentioned at a couple of meetings. If the club is to flourish it needs leadership. Tina and I will be finished with our commitment as co-presidents at the end of this year. We need someone or ones to step up to take over this job. Having co-presidents worked well for us since we can cover for each other during our absences (I spend my winters in Florida and Tina travels frequently). It also puts less pressure on a single person; so if there is someone who might be interested but would like to be a copresident please tell us and will see if we can find another individual who will share the position. Lastly, several people have asked to have another insect shoot. Unfortunately, the mornings have been too warm to guarantee good results. The temperature need to be in the mid 50s or lower so the insects don’t fly. We have been having a lot of nice dew in the morning so as soon as it gets a little cooler I will schedule an outing. In the mean time, with all the rain we have been having, the streams are very full for this time of year so get out and try some water shots. I was at Asaph yesterday and the pictures were great. Minutes of August 11, 2009, Meeting of the Grand Canyon Photography Club Co-President Ann Kamzelski called the meeting to order.

sure to introduce and talk to the guests over the break.

Ann mentioned she had created a sign for people who are interested in purchasing prints of the Gmeiner exhibit photos that may not be for sale or prints of different sizes than are offered. The potential purchasers could leave their name and number and the individual photographers can make arrangements. Ann wanted to clear it with the club that this sign was acceptable. Everyone agreed that the sign was a good idea, so Ann will leave it at the Gmeiner.

Ann discussed the possibility of an insect shoot at her house as soon as the weather cools down a bit. Mia Anderson will send out an e-mail when i t is scheduled. Ann also mentioned that everyone should fill out the viewer’s choice cards. The winner of the viewer’s choice will receive a $50.00 award and the winning photo will be on display for the following month in the Gmeiner Center foyer. The club exhibit closes August 30th.

The guests introduced themselves quickly. Ann asked members to be

magazines at the Green Free Library. New members were introduced. The show received 100 photos from 27 members, a really great turn out. 65 pictures were hung, about 2/3 of the entries. One of the judges, Michelle Schlegel, a professor of graphic arts at Mansfield University, spoke to the group about the selection process for the hung images. Michele was also available over the break to discuss individual photos as well. Respectfully Submitted, Sharon Connolly Recording Secretary

Member Spotlight Gary Thompson is published in the national motorcycle magazine American Bagger. Commissioned by a publishing company based in South Dakota to photograph a custom motorcycle in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, Gary’s photography was used for the July magazine cover, along with the centerfold of a 5-page feature article on the custom motorcycle. The photo shoot required two sessions ; over 100 images that included shots from all angles of the motorcycle, custom details (motor parts, custom paint, chrome details, etc.), also shots of the custom bike builder riding the motorcycle. The magazine editorial staff selected 13 images to use for the feature article! Gary said the overall photography experience was very rewarding and that it was also pretty cool to see the magazine on the shelf at Barnes & Noble! July was a busy ‘motorcycle photography’ month for Gary. Separate from the magazine photos, Gary was commissioned by Harley Davidson to photograph a model on a Harley for use on a billboard design. The new 15’x 45’ billboard is complete and located in Williamsport, PA. Gary said the most fun part of this assignment was riding to the site with the model used for the shoot to see the billboard for the first time and photograph her standing in front of this huge billboard! She was delighted, too.
