Guitar Virtuosos to open Concert season Wet Mountain Tribune, Thursday, October 7, 2010 In Concert opens the 2010-2011 season of classical music performances with the Iliff Guitar Quartet at the Jones Theater on Sunday, October 17 at 2 p.m. The Iliff Guitar Quartet was formed in 2006, by four guitar students at the University of Denverʼs Lamont School of Music. All of them were studying with the famous guitar virtuoso Ricardo Iznaola. The instant success of the Quartet was due both to their sensitive musicianship and their technical virtuosity. The quartet took First Place at the 2009 Annual Chamber Competition hosted by the Lamont School of Music. The performance in Westcliffe will include a variety of classical-style music written for guitar ensembles. The program will include music from as long ago at the late 1700s by and the wellknown Italian composer Luigi Boccherini, and other contemporary guitar composers. One of the contemporary composers represented in the program will be Philip Houghton. He obtained his skill at composition for guitars after performing guitar and studying scores, recordings and books, to learn how to compose for his instrument. Another contemporary composer who contributes to this program is Stephen Goss. His composition “Gnossiennes” is based on music by the well-known composer Erik Satie, who himself was famous for choosing odd titles for his compositions, allegedly to annoy the critics, since he didn't like the critics.

Gilbert Biberian, born in Istanbul of Greek and Armenian ancestry, contributes two Waltzes to this program. Composer Paulo Bellinati is one of Brazil's most accomplished guitarists. He draws his compositions at least in part from Brazilian music styles. An art show by the Monday Art Group will be on exhibit in Studio 2 at the theater beginning at 1 p.m. Edwardoʼs, The Feed Store, The Letter Drop Inn, Poag Mahoneʼs, Rancherʼs Roost Café and Sangrita restaurants are offering a 10% discount on meals (excluding alcoholic beverages) on the day of the concert to attendees who can show tickets or ticket stubs at the restaurant . Other concerts for this season include the Veronica String Quartet returning to Westcliffe on February 13, and the Apollo Chamber Brass on November 27. In addition to the regular season, In Concert will sponsor a benefit performance by the Colorado Springs Children's Chorus and the Custer County High School Choir. Donations at the vocal concert will be for the benefit of the school's music program. Tickets are available in advance at Candy's Coffee, 103 S. 2nd St., Westcliffe. Season tickets are $39 for the three season concerts. Singleconcert patron tickets are $25, adult tickets are $15, and student tickets are $5.
