Hampshire Music Service Attendance at instrumental/vocal lessons Regular attendance is essential if students are to make good progress in their instrumental and vocal lessons, and many HMS staff and their schools have well established procedures to help with this. The attached sheets may also be helpful in improving lesson attendance, although you should confirm their use with each of your schools.

1. Instrumental/vocal students’ school timetables Ask all secondary students to complete this at the start of the school year so that you will be able to send for them more easily. In primary schools make sure that you know which class each pupil is in, and consider appointing one reliable child in each group as a monitor, who collects the others a few minutes before their lesson is due to start.

2. Music lesson memo This is an official-looking slip to give to someone who is collecting a missing student. Try to use a school “runner” or a pupil who has already had their lesson with you, rather than wasting the lesson time of those who are more punctual.

3. Reminder for pupils This note for “forgetful” students to take home can be particularly effective if copied on to brightly coloured paper. In secondary schools a message written in the student’s planner may be preferable – including the time of the next week’s lesson.

4. Pupil absences Each week make sure that someone in the school knows if there have been any unexplained absences. A series of missed lessons can often result in a pupil dropping out of lessons altogether.

It is important that schools perceive all HMS teachers as being pro-active in encouraging good attendance in lessons.
