Hansberger House Herrick Archives Number H 949 A. IDENTIFICATION & LOCATION 1. Name 1.1 Never officially named by Board of Trustees action. 1.2 Alternate names noted: No names noted. Since property was acquired from Hansberger, that name is used above. See B2 below. 2. Location 2.1 Located at 2101 Kenny Road, on same site as Building H 918. 3. General Description This property included an "old frame house, " a "new barn," a chicken house, and three sheds, according to a 1915 map prepared by the Department of Civil Engineering. Since this map was altered in 1919, it is possible that some of the outbuildings were not on the property at time of purchase. The "new barn" burned on August 29, 1939 according to the Ohio State Journal for August 30, 1939; the Board of Trustees minutes for December 11, 1939 erroneously reported that the fire occurred on September 29, 1939. This barn was built in 1878, according to the Ohio State Journal account, and Professor Emeritus Lawrence E. Kunkle, who was at the fire, states that this date was consistent with the condition of the building even though it was called the "new barn." The sketch below shows the H 949 Buildings, the H 918 buildings, and two more recent buildings.

B. HISTORY OF BUILDINGS 1. The house and probably some of the outbuildings were on the property at the time of purchase. Title to the property passed to the University by warranty deed executed February 27, 1914 by Henry and Ida E. Hansberger (Deed Book 564, p. 9). 2. This property and the one to the north (H 939) were a part of the Sells property. The "new barn" was called the "Sells barn" and was built in 1878 as the winter quarters for show horses for the Sells Brothers circus (Ohio State Journal, 8/30/39). 3. The specifications for the construction of H 918 in 1928 stated that the "existing house" (H 949) would be removed by the University. Presumably this occurred in late 1928, since contracts on H 918 were awarded on October 20, 1928. However, the exact date of demolition has not been ascertained.

C. PHOTOGRAPHS 1. In Photoarchives: None found. However, X 7741 (Threshing Shed in the Woods Sells Farm, C 1930) may have been on the property. A Location in the woods to the southwest seems more likely. See H 950. John H. Herrick June 13, 1973

ADDENDUM NO. 1 The 1928 Columbus City Directory lists A.M. Farley as living at 2101 Kenny Road. Professor Emeritus Larry Kimble recalls that Farley lived in the old house (H 949) rather than the new one (H 918). John H. Herrick June 24, 1976
